Country Home of England's
Chancellor of the Exchequer
in Construction Is Ruined by
Dynamite
(By Associated Press.)
LONDON, Feb. 19.—An explosion par
tially wrecked a country residence in
ctfurse of construction for chancellor of
the exchequer, David Lloyd-George, at
Walton Heath, near London today.
A bomb had been placed in one of
the rooms of the residence, which is a
modest one adjoining the golf links on
which Lloyd-George plays.
The infernal machine was so power
I ful that the thick walls of the house
split in all dirt—tions and most of the
rooms were wrecked.
Two seven-pound cans of black pow
der also had been placed in two separate
rooms among heaps of wood shavings
which had been saturated with oil and
in the center of which burning candles
had been fixed.
The only clew by the police are two
broken hatpins which were found among
the wreckage.
It was declared by neighbors that an
automobile containing several women
passed through the village in the early
hours.
Nobody was injured by the explosion.
The house was not yet occupied.
The police say the bomb was placed
there either by militant suffragettes
or their male sympathizers.
“General” Mrs. Drummond, however,
declared the explosion was “undoubted
ly the work of women.”
She exclaimed:
“It was a fine act and sho'ws the
determination of the woman. I say, all
power to all kinds of militancy in the
direction of harrassing cabinet minis
ters short of taking human life.”
HOUSE SUSTAINS VETO
- OF IMMIGRATION BILL
Vote of 213 to 114 to Over
ride Fails of Necessary
Two-Thirds
BY RALPH SMITH.
WASHINGTON, Feb. 19.—By sustain
ing President Taft’s veto of the Immi
gration bill, the Democratic house of
representatives (today placed President
elect Wilson in an embarrassing posi
tion. The veto was sustained by a
vote of 213 to 114.
Had the advocates of the immigration
law mustered fifteen more votes the
veto would have been overridden and the
bill would have been a law, as the sen
ate yesterday voted to override the presi
dent’s disapproval.
All of the Georgia congressmen 'Were
present and voted to override the veto.
Senators Bacon and Smith voted this
way in the senate yesterday, and their
position was in accord with the unani
mous sentiment of southern senators
and representatives who are opposed
to indiscriminate immigration.
The fight to strengthen the immigra
tion laws and provide a rigid literary
test will not down, and Bresident-elect
Wilson will have to meet the issue.
His views on Immigration were a
source of criticism during his presi
dential campaign and his canvass fos
the Democratic nomination. If the im
migration bill is put up to him, as it
certainly will be, it may prove embar
rassing from a political point of view.
President Taft vetoed the immigra
tion bill on the strength of a letter
written to him by Secretary of Com
merce and Labor Nagel, in which objec
tions were made to the rigid literary
test provided in the bill.
The purpose of this provision was
to exclude from America undesirable
aliens of the criminal class, the trans-
Atlantic shipping interests maintained
a big lobby in Washington to defeat
the bill, it was charged^ on the floor
of both ’ senate and house.
The strict literary test, it was ar
gued. would seriously ’ handicap the
business of the shipping interests by
limiting the number of immigrants.
The members of.the house were flood
ed with telegrams today urging them to
sustain the veto and thereby defeat the
bill. These messages came from vari
ous sources.
AS TO FLAVOUR
Found Her Favorite Again
A bright young lady tells how-' she
came to be acutely sensative as to the
taste of coffee:
“My health had been very poor for
several' years,” she says. “I loved coffee
and drank it for breakfast, but only
learned by accident, as it were, that it
was the pause of the constant, dreadful
headaches from which I suffered every
day, and of the nervousness that drove
sleep from my pillow and so deranged
my stomach that everything I ate gave
me acute pain. (Tea is just as injuri
ous, because it contains caffeine, the
same drug found in coffee.)
“My condition finally got so serious
that I was advised by my doctor to go
to a hospital. There they gave me what
I supposed was coffee, and I thought it
was the best I ever drank, but I have
since learned it was Postum. I gained
rapidly and came home in four weeks.
“Somehow the coffee we used at home
didn’t taste right when I got back. I
tried various kinds ft but none tasted as
good as that I drank in the hospital,
and all brought back the dreadful head
aches and the ‘sick-all-over’ feeling.
“One day I got a package of Postum,
and the first taste of it I took, I
said ‘that's the good coffee we had in the
hospital!’ I have drank it ever since,
and eat Grape-Nuts for my breakfast.
I have no more headaches, and feel bet
ter than I have for years.” Name giv
en upon request. Read the famous lit
tle book, “The Road to Wellville,” in
pkgs. “There’s a reason.”
Postum now comes in concentrated,
powder form, called Instant Postum.
It is prepared by stirring a level tea
spoonful in a cup of hot water, adding
sugar to taste, and enough cr£am to
bring the color to golden brown.
Instant Postum is convenient; there's
no waste; and the flavour is always
uniform. Sold by grocer*—45 to 60-
cup tin 80 cts., 90 to 100-cup tin 50 cts.
A 5-cup trial tin mailed* for grocer’s
name and 2-cent stamp for postage.

ROBBERY'S TACTICS
SCORED BY UNDERWOOD
Georgia Congressman Was
Behind Filibuster to Delay
Supply Bill
BY RALPH SMITH.
WASHINGTON, Feb. 19.—Declaring
that the time has arrived when “some
gentlemen” should realize their respon
sibility to the American people, Leader
Oscar W. Underwood, this afternoon en
gaged in a lively colloquy with Con
gressman Roddenbery, of Georgia, with
reference to the expeditious considera
tion of the sundry civil appropriation
bill.
Roddenbery was behind an incipient
filibuster to delay this big supply meas
ure which carries $113,000,000 and had
demanded its second reading in full.
"It is manifestly foolish to demand the
second reading of a bill that has bfeen
printed and must be read in this house
paragraph by paragraph for amendment
under the five minutes* rule,” declared
Underwood.
"No man is entitled to block the leg
islative wheelb of congress with the
foolish use of a decadent rule."
Roddenbery challenged the leader to
answer if it is has not always been the
practice to rush through 'big supply
bills during the closing hours of con
gress,' send them to the senate, bring
them hack and accept millions of dol
lars In amendments.
As a result of, Roddenbery’s activity,
the rules committee reported a special
rule, for the consideration of the bill.
THE ARMY APPOINTMENTS
Searitor Hake Smith States
That They Are Willing
to That'
(By Associated Press.)
WASHINGTON, Feb. 19.—No longer
fearful of the possibility of having the
senate enter upon a general confirma
tion of the pending nominatidns of
President Taft, Democratic senators
have decided to move an executive ses
sion at the first opportunity.
“We will confirm the army, navy
and diplomatic nominations and possi
bly some others,” said Senator Hoke
Smith, of Georgia, today in announcing
the decision of his party associates.
“We have been willing from the first
to go that far, but we were determined
not to be forced into the consideration
of the entire list contrary to our own
wishes.”
It is believed promotions in the rev
enue cutter service, the marine corps
and possibly a few miscellaneous nomi
nations also will be confirmed, but
even then from 1,000 to 1,200 nomina
tions will j still be pending.
INTIMIDATED WOMAN
SO COURT RECORD SAYS
Four Men Charged With Mis
treating Old Woman Who
“Informed"
(Special Dispatch to The Journal.)
GREENVILLE, S. C., Feb. 19.—
Charged with the unusual and unique
offense of “conspiracy to intimidate a
citizen of the United States in the free
exercise of a right given by the consti
tution of the United States to inform
deputy collector of internal revenue and
other officers of this department of vi
olations of the internal revenue laws,”
four men have been given a preliminary
trial before United States Commissioner
Blythe and bound over to the federal
court.
The alleged conspirators are all na
tive, residents of the famed Bark Cor
ner, John Howard, Will Howard, Lee
Howard and Somonias Lockhardt are
the names of the men accused. It was
brought out in the warrant upon which
the men were arrested that they mal
treated an old woman of the mountains,
named Amanda Ballew, because they be
lieved she had “informed” on them. It
is alleged that the defendants fired upon
the old woman’s domicile, causing her
to flee to a near by cave for safety.
LODGE LEADS ADVOCATES
TO OVERRIDE PRESIDENT
Senate Will Attempt to Pass
Immigration Bill Over
Taft's Head
(By Associated Press.)
WASHINGTON, Feb. 19.—Friends of
the Burnett-Dillingham “literary test”
immigration bill claimed to have re
ceived support to repass the measure
over President Taft’s veto, when the sen
ate reconvened today. A vote on the
measure at 3 o’clock has been agreed
upon. Senators Stone, O’Gorman and
others planned to speak.
Repassage over the veto required a
two-thirds vote, and Senator Lodge and
other advocates of the measure were
busy during the morning lining up’votes
in its support. Personal arguments by
President Taft, it was said, Influenced
a number of senators who formerly had
supported the measure to declare them
selves opposed to its passage.

OR A SOUR STOMAGH.
“Pape’s Diapepsin” makes
your Stomach feel fine in
five minutes.
Wonder what upset your stomach—
which portion of the food did the dam
age—do you? Well, don’t bother. If
your stomach is in a revolt; if sour,
gassy and upset, and what you just
ate has fermented into stubborn lumps;
your head dizzy and aches; belch gases
and acids and eructate undigested
food; breath foul, tongue coated—just
take a little Diapepsin and in five min
utes you truly will wonder what be
came of the indigestion and distress.
Millions of men and women today
know that it is needless to have a bad
stomach. A little Diapepsin occasion
ally keeps this delicate organ regulat
ed and they eat their favorite foods
without fear.
If your stomach doesn’t take care
of your -iberal limit without rebellion;
if your food is a damage instead of a
help, remember the quickest, surest,
most harmless relief is Pape’s Diapep
sin, which costs only fifty cents for
a large case at drug stores. It’s truly
wonderful—it digests food and sets
things straight, so gently and easily
that it is really astonishing. Please,
for your sake, don’t go on and on with
a weak, disordered stomach,.; it’s so un
necessary.—(Advt.)

Spirited Contest Is Looked

MEXICO CITY, Feb. 19.—General
Huerta will probably become provision
al president of Mexico as a result of
the joint session of the deputies and
senators. The action to be taken ap
pears to be a mere formality, as a ma
jority have already signed a promise to
support an agreement made between
Huerta and Diaz.
Little time was lost today in filling
the streets with crowds. The shutters
came down from business buildings
which had not been opened for ten days,
and shopkeepers made every effort to
resume their activity.
The Mexican Herald and El Universal
were the only newspapers which appear
ed today, and they enjoyed a phenominal
sale.
La Barra Regarded
As Mexico's Hope
DOUGLAS, Ariz., Feb. 19.—Mexican
officials here expressed the belief that
Zapata, Orozco, Salazar and other reb
els would not join Huerta. They de
clared that Huerta would lack the
necessary support to make him more
than a passing incident, and that de la
Barra was the man, upon whom the sal
vation of Mexico depended.
NOGALES, Ariz., Feb. 19.—After re
ceiving official confirmation of Madero’s
overthrow, Mexican officials at Nogales,
Sonora, expressed satisfaction. The ma
jority believe a military dictatorship
will be the best assurance of peaceful
conditions.
(Bv Associated Press.)
MEXICO CITY, Feb. 19.-—The elec
tion by congress of General Huerta to
th e provisional presidency of Mexico,
Is not regarded as certain. It is sai$
that if named he will appoint Francisco
de la Barra his minister of foreign
affairs and General Manuel Mondragon
his minister of war. Mondragon was
Diaz's chief lieutenant at the arsenal.
Considerable opposition to the elec*
tion of Huerta as provisional president
is in e- idence in the lobby of the cham*,
her of deputies. Although General
Huerta has 1 a strong following, it was
thought possible that there would de
velop a friendly fight between his par
tisans and those of Felix Diaz.
In any event it is believed that the
cabinet will include .del la Barra, Mon
dragon, Reyes and de la Fuente.
This cabinet slate was regarded as
probable of appointment, subject to the
rtiflektion of congress. f

To every governor throughout the
republic General Huerta today sent tel
egrams relating what had occurred. It
was only ten days ago that another tel
egram was sent to the same governors
the revolt had been suppressed and
by Francisco Madero, who told them
that Felix Diaz was a fugitive.
GUSTAVO MADERO EXECUTED.
Gustavo Madero, brother of the de
posed president, was removed from the
penitentiary at 9 o’clock this morning
and executed. It is presumed that this
was done by order of Felix Diaz, under
the notorious “.fugitive law.”
Gustavo Madero and a few of the
other prisoners slept in the penitentiary,
to which they ha<i beer# instrumental in
sending so many men high in public life
for political crimes.
Francisco Madero, the deposed presi
dent, is to be removed some time today
under guard from the national palace
and lodged in one of the military bar
racks of the city. He was permitted to
rest in one of the bed rooms of the
palace all night.
Since the first few minutes af*er his
arrest he has maintained a sullen si
lence, refusing to answer questions and
waving his questioners off with his
characteristic nervous jestures.
All military commanders in every dis
trict of Mexico have been asked by
Huerta to invite all rebels in their dis
tricts to unite with them. The federal
commanders will inform the rebels of
developments in the capital and assure
them that a general election will take
place at an early date.
Rodolfo Reyes, who was reported a
suicide, is still alive. He was wound
ed during a fight in the neighborhood
of the palace.
PRISONERS OF WAR RELEASED.
About 130 students of the military
school at Tlalpam, who were implicated
in the plot for the liberation of Diaz
from prison and who had been impris
oned by Madero, were released today
by order of General Huerta.
The attitude of Zapata, the rebel lead
er, will take toward the new regime is
problematical.
According to a member of the Madero
household, Zapata two days ago offered
the services of 4,000 of his followers to
President Madero for use against Diaz.
It had been stated that President Ma
dero had previously sent to Zapata 100,-
000 pesos for his nelp.
Huerta decided today to send troops
to Guernavaca in order to prevent that
city being occupied by Zapata.
REVOLT NOT ENDED.
A report received today from the in
terior makes it evident that t*he revolu
tion throughout the republic is far from
ended. The report said that Emilio
Vasquez Gomez will persist in backing
himself for the post of provisional pres
ident, taking it for granted that Emili-
ano Zapata will continue to keep his
thousands in the south.
Hundreds of Americans and other for
eigners returned today to their homes
in various parts of the city. Many
found their residences wrecked by shells.
Scarcely a house had escaped rifle bul
lets, and many of them had been looted.

Deposed President Had De

(By Associated Press.)
MEXICO CITY, Feb. 19.—The execu
tion of Gustavo Madero, known as the
“power behind the throne” in Mexico,
formed today a tragic sequel' to the up
heaval In Mexico City yesterday when
Francisco Madera’s administration was
turned out by the federal generals.
The ex-president and his brother
Gustavo were sent this morning as
prisoners to the arsenal, from which
Felix Diaz had bombarded the city for
ten days.
Soon after their arrival there Gus
tavo Madero was subjected to the nor
torious “fugitive law” by which he
was free to run under the rifle Tire
of his guards. ,He fell dead under
their bullets.
There is some trepidation also as to
the fate which awaits the ex-presi
dent and his cabinet because of the
finding of a list of “those who ought
to die” among the official documents
of Francisco Madero’s government. It
is feared that this may lead to ugly
reprisals.
De la Barra and others were on his
“death list.”
