iLiverpool cables, renewed foreign .buying, short
covering and ‘support from some of the larger
spot houses. There was considerable realizing
and some local selling ou the appearance of
clearing weather in the south, under which
pri<$ eased ol fa point or two right after the
calf, but the general tone of the early market
wate steady and offerings seemed to l>o held in
check l»y predictions for renewed rains in the,
south toward the end of the week.
Trices eased off to about or a shade under
Saturday’s closing during the middle of the
morning, on realizing and local selling. Of
ferings were not ngressive. however, and the
market late in the morn! tig was dull but
fairly steady on reports of a good spot do-
inand In the southwest.
No fresh feature developed during the early
afternoon tyhlle prices gradually sagged to a not
loss of 4 or 5 points.

of the belt. At tbq same time tno market
had little buying power and unfavorable weaher
news served chiefly to check offerings from
the short side. The forecast called for fair
and warmer weather everywhere 1 in tit bit,
wnich was called very favorabl. At the end
of th first half hourof business prices were 1
to 3 points up.
The market became very dull as the morning
wore on, wtih both sides inclined to adopt a
waiting attitude because of tne approaching
report on ginning and the holidays to follow*.
Reports of damage in the early sections of
Texas were balanced by telegrams from other
parts of the belt to the effeet that the dry
weather was allowing crop work to go ahead
again. At noon prices were 1 point under
Saturday’s close. ^

COTTON MARKET OPINIONS ,
Miller & Co.: That a rally is possible we
agree, but We feel that the extent of same
e give to anyon* s highly engraved, will only be measured by short covering and,
‘ niaffrtatn btfr'^viehvs that'Tallies win
nc, as unsubstantial character.
Logan & Bryan: We think bulls will find
morrow were against tlie market.
Spots are steady at quotations, some demand
for stialgnt grade lots. F.o.b. offerings report
ed larger. Memphis wired: “Demand falling
off.” Montgomery says past week’s weather
was very unfavorable ou account of heavy
rains.
N. L. CARPENTER 8c CO.’S COTTON LETTER
NEW YORK, March 17.—The market has
been featureless with lltle or no outside busi
ness. Sentiment continues bearish aud crowd
Inclined to sell on all hard spots. It is believed
that any further rally would bring out welling
from Wall street operators as the speculative
interests are against the market.
R. H. ROUNTREE & CO.’S COTTON LETTER
NEW* YORK, March 17.—July cotton sold to
day at noon at exactly the same figure as on
Friday of last week. That is about the whole
history of these six days. Declines were fol
lowed by recoveries and then advances by reces
sions. Alter muny days of labor, a mouse
results.
Yet, operators continue enthusiastic for or
against the market in spite of months of un
changed prices. Some are convinced prices
are about to advance in a most sensational
manner. Others feel that It only needs a few
days’ sunshine to start a break. But the con
servative ones fully believe that there is enough
cotton in the world to supply all needs with
out being a weight of importance until more
is known of the next crop. In other words, the
Inspiration, they think, must come from the
new, and not the old crop.
This Is sustained by the figures this week.
Supylies did not lose any more, practically, than
last year, although a few weks ago 200.000
bales were lost in a wek lver last year. As
long as this ratio is maintained, spinners are
not likely to grow nervous over the future.
All now depends pon the weafter in April and
May. A wet April and May jvold advance
prices a cent or more. To change the cottin
situation, something must happen to the next
crop. March continues strong, with daily short
covering. May promises the same.

•THE RADIUM TERRORS,’»
“CHILDREN OF THE CLOVEN
HOOF,” Etc.
(Continuation of Chapter II.)
There was no sleep for Bernice that
night. She rose earlier than usual next
morning, exhibiting a feverishness of
manner which Fabian noted at break
fast.
‘‘I think the summer heat^ls affecting
my Berny. A run to Norway might
give u's an appetite.”
“Next month, Fabian.” She nibbled
her toast abstractedly, but drank her
strong coffee in feverish Httle gulps.
“I’ll ‘try a spin in my new Daimber this
morning,” she went on, “while you run
to town. I kljow you want to hear the
latest from Caleret.”
Fabian demurred, but succumbed final
ly to her persuasions. After he had
gone she put on a light gray walking
costume and strolled leisurely from the
grounds. She did not intend to use her
own car. One’s chauffeurs were not to
be trutsed in all things. Blaymore, who
had driven her yesterday, must not see
her in Hammersho’s company again.
She knew the road and house indicated
on Hammersho’s card. The place had
attracted her often when driving to town
with Fabian. It was a six-roomed non
descript dwelling place with a large
garden at back and front. For the last
year it had been neglected and its paths
were overrun with weeds and scrubby
undergrowth, with here and there a few
half-blighted rse trees struggling for
existence. *
The long walk fatigued her somewhat,
or It may have been a sub-conscious
dread of meeting Hammersho and Engle-
heart within the weed-haunted house
that depressed her. Arriving at the
street end she passed slowly toward
the house halted for a breath-giving
'bioment, her hand on the rickety gate.
There were other houses in the road,
gloomy, disreputable abodes where cats
and dirty children squalled and bur
rowed in the sandj>- byways and garden
paths.
Somehow It reminded her of the coolie
quarters of Nagasaki except that the
poor English children were less pic
turesque than the Japanese. Opening
the gate softly she stole up the long
week-choked path and knocked at the
door.

CHAPTER III.
The door was openet^ almost instant
ly by the Japanese -doctor, who closed
it with ferocious suddenness, once she
had entered. Vile odors of tobacco and
cooked food assailed her. A smell ot
sake and ginegar mingled 'with an un
appetizing whiff of burning cakes filled
the room. Bernice held her breath.
“You see"—Hammersho was standing
some distance away—“I have no wife t°
regard my affairs. My cakes burn to
ashes While I am employed in other
things.”
He pushed a chair in her direction
with no more ceremony than a coolie
basket seller. His Jong black hair
smoothed down over his temples^ inten

were stained with acids or tobacco, she
knew not which. It seemed only yester
day that she had ?een him Walking in

samurai and a child of the old nobility.
And now . . . there were only
grqasy clothes and a smell of fish and
vi'riegar.
“I have risked much in coming here,
Hiogi Hammersho,” she said with dif
ficulty. “Therefore I beg you state
your intentions as briefly as possible.”
He was about to dart toward the kitch

stronger each moment. h£ halted with

“You remember how Sono, your cook,

You ate them with honey balls. Tashan!
How the time flies!”
'He returned to the little front room,

He stared voiceless as an imagi

“Imry is very dear to Engleheart
me, Bernice!”
His immobility almost made her
out, “What do you want, Dr. Hami
sho?” she demanded. “Money?”
He looked up sharplj’, ‘‘I shall n
ask you for money, Bernice; not
Kromer money!” /
“Then what is It?”
His puffy face came within a foo
her own and she tasted his abysmal deg

tried to laugh and the sound drove the
knotted vains into his bloodless face.

He looked up slowly at her approach,
his small hands gripping several piece;

never a plump-cheeked boy of six, gifted
with a speaking voice and habits.
