By an order issued which took effect
March 1, Secretary Wilson has released
from quarantine 19,490 square miles in
the southern states as a result of the
good progress that has been made dur
ing the past year in the eradication of
the ticks which spread the disease of
cattle known as Texas fever or tick
fever. Additional areas amounting to
5.493 square miles have already been
released since last spring, making a
total of 24,983 square miles released
during the past year. The total ter
ritory released from quarantine since
the work of tick eradication was begun
in 190B now amounts to more than 187,-
000 square miles being greater' in size
than the combined areas of South Car
olina, Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi.
This work is carried on by the bureau
ot animal industry of the United States
department of agriculture in co-opera
tion with state and local authorities in
the affected states*
The territory released by the secre
tary’s recent order is as follows: In Ala
bama, Madison county, 811 square miles.
In California, the remainder of San
Luis Obispo county, 1.834 square miles.
In Georgia, 1,535 square miles, includ
ing the counties of Fannin, Hall, Banks.
Clarke and Putnam. In Mississippi,
6.647 square miles. Including the coun
ties of Hinds. Coahoma and Issaquena,
and parts of Noxubee, Jefferson, Monroe,
Madison, Rankin, Chickasaw, Attala and
Leake counties. In Missouri the re-
• lnainder of McDonald. Newton and Ore
gon counties, amounting to 185 square
mile#. In North Carolina, Edgecombe
county, 509 square miles. In Oklaho
ma. 1,654 square miles, being the re
mainder or Lincoln and Comanche coun
ties and parts of Grady and Pottawato
mie counties. In South Carolina. 1,615
square miles, including Darlington and
Marlboro counties, the remainder of
York county and parts of Lancaster
and Chester counties. In Tennessee,
1,061 square miles, including the re
mainder of Polk and Hamilton counties
and p&rts of McNairy, Decatur, Har
deman and Wayne counties. In Texas,
3,739 square miles, including Stonewall
and Reagan counties, the remainder of
Howard county, and parts of Harde
man, Foard, Knox Haskell, and Terrell
counties.
Secretary Wilson’s order continues the
quarantine against the removal of cattle
except under certain conditions from the
territory which has not yet been freed
olVticks, as follows: All of Florida and
Louisiana, the greater portions of Ala
bama, Arkansas, Georgia, Mississippi,
Oklahoma, South Carolina and Texas,
less than half of North Carolina, a few
counties in Virginia, one county (San
Diego) in California, and a small area
in Ripley county, Mo. Cattle from
this quarantined territory may bo re
moved to non-quarantined territory only
under certain conditions which are
prescribed in the regulations. They may
be shipped in quarantine to certain large
northern slaughtering centers for imme
diate slaughter, but they may be moved
for other purposes only under official
certificate after they have been inspect
ed and dipped either once or twice, ac
cording to circumstances,^ in a pre

Black Orpington, .No. 2052, in Pen No. 59, laid 27 eggs in 28 days.
Seventy-eight hens out of the seven hundred have not laid an egg. A
few contestants have made the mistake of sending old hens, others did
not have their stock mature enough. To make a good record in a con
test like this, the stock should be hatched early and fully matured by
the time the contest begins. The best individual hen records to date ai'e
as follows:
Hen No. 66, S. C. White Leghorn, England 84 eggs
Hen No. 68, S, C. White Leghorn, England ...82 eggs
Hen No. 2076, Buff Orpington, Missouri 81 eggs
Hen No. 600, Buff Wyandotte, Missouri 79 eggs
Hen No. 65, S. C. White Leghorn, England 79 eggs
Hen No. 860, Buff Wyandotte, Vermont 79 eggs
Hen No. 709, Buff Plymouth Rock, Missouri 78 eggs
Hen No. 735, Black Langshan, Missouri 78 eggs
Hen No. 656, White Wyandotte, Arkansas 77 eggs
Hen No. 601, Silver Wyandotte, Iowa - 77 eggs
Hen No. 2158, Buff Orpington, Missouri 77 eggs
In this feeding experiment, the positions of the ten pens remain the
same with the exception that the pen fed according to the New York
method of feeding laying hens has advanced from ninth to seventh place.
Where feed of all kinds is kept before the hens, they seem to be doing
best and laying the greatest number of eggs. The pen m which the hens
feed themselves from hoppers and in which feed of various kinds are
kept before them are 42 eggs in the lead of their next competitor, the
pen fed according to the Canadian method of feeding. So far, this experi
ment indicates that uens will lay more eggs in the wimer months where
they are hopper fed, or fed from an automatic feeder than where they
are hand fed. The results for the
summer months may prove the oppo
site to be true for hot weather.
Yours very truly,

“["HIS is the caution applied to the public announcement of Castoria that has
been manufactured under the supervision of Chas. H. Fletcher for over
30 years—the genuine Castoria. We respectfully call the attention of fathers and
mothers when purchasing Castoria to see that the wrapper bears his signature in :
black. When the wrapper is removed the same signature appears on both sides
of the bottle in red. Parents who have used Castoria for their little ones in the
past years need no warning against counterfeits and imitations, hut our present
duty is to call the attention of the younger generation to tie great danger of intro- i
duemg into their families spurious medicines.
It is to be regretted that there are people who are now engaged in the
nefarious business of putting up and selling all sorts of substitutes, or what should
more properly be termed conterfeits, for medicinal preparations not only" for
adults, but worse yet, for children’s medicines. It therefore devolves on the mother X
to scrutinize closely what she gives her child. Adults can do that for themselves 1
but the child has to rely on the mother’s watchfulness. ~

NEW QUARANTINE LAW
BENEFIT TO FARMERS
WASHINGTON, March 16.—Increas-
ed activity in the work of eradicating-
the cattle tick may be expected to fol
low the revision of the quarantine reg
ulations just announced by the United
States department of agriculture. This
is the opinion expressed today by Pres
ident Finley, of the Southern railway
company, who said:
“The provision that cattle may be
shipped from the quarantined area
unde r the certificate of an Inspector of
the Bureau of Animal Industry that
they have been dipped twice with an
interval of from five to.ten days, in an
arsenical solution or otherwise treated
in a manner satisfactory to the secre
tary of agriculture and under the su
pervision of an inspector and that they
are ’free from infection, will greatly en
courage farmers to get the ticks out
of their herds. It will enable the in
dividual farmer to benefit from his
work before the locality in which he
lives is entirely released from quaran
tine. The revised regulations indicate
a desire of the department of agricul
ture to remove restrictions on the
movement of cattle ’from the quaran
tined. area so far a*s it may safely b^
done.
“Simultaneously with the issuance of
the more liberal regula*?ons, the de
partment has revised the quarantine
line, releasing large areas in the re
gions where systematic work against
the tick has been carried on, and mak
ing the total area released since 1905
more than 387,000 square miles. Work
against the tick is especially active in
Mississippi where at the close of the
year, 1912, there were 2,1 $1 dipping vats
in operation. In one county in this
state there were 185 vats. Similar ac
tivity throughout the entire quarantin
ed area would make the complete de
struction of the tick only the matter
of a very few years.”
