Here’s what Larry Grant says.
‘.lt- really seems that in selecting ‘
j.banks for the custody of our puplie
funds the governor has chosen the
weakest and most venal concerns to |
be found. He has brought no peace I
upon our state affairs that miseraple j
mismanagcuumt that has evercharac. \
! terized his private business and
wrecked several fortunes We believe '
Gov. Colquitt to be an honest man ‘
but lie is undoubtedly the poorest:
manipulator of business that ever
afflicted a commonwealth.” And I
knowing this, as Gantt says the Echo ■
was one of the governor’s strongest
supporters.
THE HE VEN IE TROUBLE.
Mr. Speer’s opposition to collccor
Clark of this district fails to meet the
approval of our best people since
they see in it no prospect to improve
the government service but simply
a scheme to promote his personal
ends by securing whatever of cheap
popularity may result therefrom.
The democratic party could not be :
.strengthened by displacing an hon-1
cst and competent republican official j
and filling his place with a man of 1
the same poiticial faith, who, from
lack of experience, would certainly
be less competent and, consequently,
less likely to give satisfaction to the
people and the government. Collect
or Clark is universally conceded to be
a first class official, and we have no
desire to see him disturbed; and in
this we believe we express the gener
al venlict of the citizens in this por-■
tion of the state. Mr Speer cannot, |
certainly, have so soon forgotten the
result of his resolutions in congress
calling upon the commissioner of
internal revenue to show why it was
necessary to use a "med force in en
forccing the revenue law in his con- '
grcssional district. The correspon
dence and fae t« brought out iu the .
commissioner’s report showed up ■
very unfavorable for our worthy :
young independent Jf. C. The collect- ,
ors deputies, so far as we have been :
it possilion to know and observe, are
clever gentlemen, and by the way, <
they all supported Mr. Speer earn
estly in his race for congressional ’
honors. They have,the respect and
confidence of the law abiding people
ami, if rebublienns are to continue in
these positions, we are in favor of re
taining the present .incumbents.
