Says the Rome Bulletin: ‘"There is
unuch-necd for the strict enforcement
of the vagrant law in Rome. There
are numbers of idle men lounging
around who should be made to give
an accouut of themselves. Neither
should partiality be shown to color
but all Who do nothing and have no ,
visible means of support should be
put to work by the county. There is
plenty of work to be found, and the
farmers are beging for labor.
There is no excuse for idleness.

Says the St. Louis Republican 11
“Does it mean nothing that while the
shipments of grain from the port of ;
New Ymk during the month of April i
wore very nearly a quarter less than
during the corresponding month of
1880, the shipments from the port of
New Orleans were almost double
what they were a year ago?# New
York may delude itself with the idea
that Ibis is a mere temporary spurt,a s
matter of chance, but it will have to,
open its eyes in time. The down
river movement is no longer an ex
periment, but the current of grain
that wav is quite as firmly establish
ed now as the current of water.’’
The most learned printer in the I

his learning he has sutl’ered from act

The assets of the bank of Rome
will fall SIO,OOO short of paying the
(State’s prior claim, and the depositor
have been asserted to make good the
deficiency. This is carrying things
too far and we sincerely sympathize
with those so unfortunate as to have
a bank account there.
Now that railroad combination
seem to be trying to secure every
mile of rat) iu the Stalo we wish some
one would ’lick up the dainty little

through to this point.
A Devil's DaMerdly Deed.
A West Point correspondent of the
Post-Appeal gives the particulars of
a terrible tragedy which occurred
near Talladega, Ala., last Tuesday:
A picnic ezcusfion went out to the
falls on the river. And among the
number was Dr. Win. Toole, who
was accompanied by his little daugh
ter, a child Os seven years. The
mother of the. little girl had dressed
her up very nicely, pulling on gold
ornaments and a di unond pin.
During the early part of the after
noon was missed and the father went
iin search of her. As he approached
the falls he saw a negro man carry
ing garments, and rushing on him he .
saw that it was the dead body of his
child.
The negro had murdered bt r, strip
ped her of the jewelry and was about
to throw the body over the fails.
The frantic father rushed on the
savage fiend, grappled with him,and
a furious fight took place over the
body of the child. The father’s erv
for help was responded to by some of j
the picnic party,‘the negro was over- ,
powered, and a rope being improvised
he was hung to a tree.
It was found th; t the child had been
choked 1 <»«]<>»? I 1 <•<■!•< . I. ■> > 1 I ,
cnoKcu lodc.if h. Ihe had pr- b
ably decoyed her away from her play
mates, and stilling her cries, carried
i her otffor tuurib r and robbery.
In another moment the raging wa
ters would have swallowed up the
dreadful secret of the crim > and when
the body of the lilllecirl was found it
. would have been supposed a case of
accidental dro ruing.
'J he monster of a murderer was left
'hanging to the tree, and the picnic
'party was transformed to a funeral
jeortege, which conveyed the body of
| the little innocent to her stricken
home. No events has ever occurred
lof such a dreadful and harrowing na ,
