The Nvlsanee of Fences.
An exchange remarks that the New
York law forbidding the pasturing of
cattle in the (streets and roads has ,
abated “ many nuisances in the shape i
of unsightly fences. The most costly i
and artistic fence deforms a fine land
scape. Fences must sometimes be
tcierated as necessities but should
never bo regarded as ornaments. The
necessity for them is far less than has
been supposed. The modern discovery
that fences are to keep cattle in, not to
keep them out, is a valuable one. If
you have a sow and pigs, fence off a lot
big enough to keep them in, but don’t
oblige your neighbor to support two
miles of road fence to keep them out
Unsightly fences arc disappearing in
many districts, and it is probable that,
where little stock is kept, it will soon be
cheaper to cut their feed and carry it to
them than to fence pastures. If the
pens that we see in our country vil
lages were' taken away, with proper
care, all would live in a beautiful park ;
this would foreshadow and aid the re
moval of social and sectarian barriers, a
consummation devoutly to be wished.
The change of public opinion in regard
to fencing has been a pleasure and a
surprise. In many places we can hardly
see a fence, and rods of old fencing may
be had for the asking.”
A Conundrum.
The Washington Post propounds an
original conundrum: “Can’t some other
word than * genial ’ be found to describe
the man who shakes hands and drinks
with everybody, smiles on everybody,
and laughs at the thrice-told anecdotes
which vex the ears of drowsy men?”

We learn that Ellis &Co., proprietors
w of Bailey Springs, are making prepara
tions to entertain an unusually* large
number of visitors this summer. They are
receiving communications from all over
the south inquiring rates and making con
tracts for board. This is only their due,
for not only are they most successful
hotel kee| ets,but their place is in every
way worthy of patronage. It is one of
the coolest, shadiest, breeziest places in
the South ; the locality and surround
ings arc delightful ; the buildings are
roomy, airy, and conveniently arranged;
the accommodations, fare and attention
are first class, and Shoal Greek is the
most romantic stream and the best fish
ing water you ever saw. Add to this
the unrivalled power of the old Rock
Spring in the cure of dropsy, scrofula,
dyspepsia ami diseases of the blood, skin
and kidneys, and the sum of attractions
is irresistible. If you have ever been
there you know this is all true. If you
have not, try it just once. You will
never regret it. Address Ellis & Co.,

Wicked for Clergymen.
Rev. , Wnshington, D. <’., writes: ■ I
believe it to be all wrong and even wicked
for clergymen or other public men to be led
into giving testimonials *i> quack doctors ci
vile stuffs called medicines, but when a
really meritorious article made of valuable
remedies known to all, that all physicians
use and trust in daily, we should freely
commend it. I therefore cheerfully and
heartily commend Hop Bitters for the good
they have done me and my friends, firmly
believing they have no equal for family use.

A very neat mot by Mlle. Fargueil,

One night on entering the green-room

Tho mimic stood petrified, but Mlle.

Cured of Drinking.
‘A young friend of mine wa< cured of an
insatiable thirst for liquor, which had so
prostrated him that lie was unable to do any
