OF AI-
uf the simplest and most efficacious
way of dispossessing herself of her
wealth. Iu fact she was obliged to
practice a sort of l'aming system on
her bank account, to keep it from
gr< wing unwieldy.
A large portion of be. fortune and
the celibacy that guarded it she owed
to the same person. The Duchess of
St Albans k”.ew what si nee; e affec
tion, and wh.it wealth of tenderness
adventurers had for rich women, and,
i rusting her beneficiary’s good taste
to prevent her from marrying an
Englishman, site conditioned her be
quest on her lieneficiary’s not marry
ing a foreigner or a naturalized citi
zen.
The Duchess’ confidence iu the
good taste of her beneficiary was not
misplaced. The Baroness lias reached
her 66th year and is still described iu
legal dociuneni8 ns a spit ster. But
not even British consols and city
property in London can avert the
dans ol Cupid, and the Baroness,
now in the full maturity of woman
hood. and with a capacity for feeling
that misses of thirty or forty' years
are entire strangers to, is wildly,
madly, pas.-ion;itely in love. More
than that, she is profoundly, ecstalf
rally and tumultuously beloved.
There is a charm about a maiden of
66, that is as irresistible as it is in-
• le-cribable. Very young women are
flighty and fickle. A man cannot be
sure when one of them tells him she
loves him but that she may tire of
him after ten or fifteen years. But
when a girl ot 66 years throws her
anus devoid ot useless adipose mat
ter, around his neck ami tells him
she’ll love him as long ns she lives,
In* feels sure, if lie lias looked lately
•il a table of expiClarions of life, that
the chances ar. in lavor of her keep
ill” her word.
Il is hardly t ecce-eary to nr ntion
the nali.'iiality e.f ibis lad) ’s love. Ot
course be is an American. He is
twenty-nine yems old. There is a
charm about an American of twenty-
nine that is as irresistible as it is in-
de-crib; bio. A whole g neralion of
English bachelors have been trying
to win the Baroness Buidct Coutis,
but uiihouijsn.'cess. They meant well
but they were Englishmen ; of ours*
they couldu’t succeed with so sensible
a lady as the Baroness. But she
nice' a a young American, she makes
him almoner of her bounty, and as l.is
American characteristics become one
l>y one known to her, the flame ol af
fection hursts forth in spite*of tiie
(act th it if the conflagration isn’t
qoetjehed it will destroy a large pari
of her property. She doesn't clue-it,
alt bough her check is good for millions,
-be lets it burn, and enjoys the novel
am! delightful sensation. There must
be an intmen-e amount of extremely
dry iiiid h ghly combustible matter in
the bosom of a girl of sixty-six, and
it may really he imagined that when
ilie torch ol Hymen is applied!to
a tinder box the result ng flames will
defy, as they do in this case, the inter
ested efforts at extinction put forth by
the Baroness’ relatives and friends,
who fear that her marriage will im-
pair their prospects of being well re
membered in her will.
The Baroness nobly resists all these
se fish appeals, and listens only to the
promptings of her heart, mature, yet
palpitating with the excitemei.t of her
first love Every American will wish
happiness to her and to her American
lover, in spile of his serious error in
being naturalized. Nothing is more
bi antiful, and few things are rarer,
thtin to see two hearts, aged 29 and
66 re-pectivcly, heat as one, and when
the young gentleman. M ho has been
living on a salary paid him by bis lady
love, promises to endow the Barone.-?
Burdett-Coutts with all his wordly
goods, the spectacle will be worth go
ing some distance to ere.
At breakfast, the dainty, clean
house mistress arrays herself in fresh
and simple attire; no crumpled hair
in unwholesome reminder of Iasi
night’s elaborate coiffure, no silks or
costly fabrics, now spoiled and dilap
idnted ; no formidable wrappers, loud
of color and Wonderful of pattern ; no
twice used liuen; no slatternly shawls,
that horror in untastef ul houses; no
touch of dishabille in the slightest or
least suggestive degree. Unhappily
ihe picture is much too rare. There
are many women who persist in weir
ing at tho morning meal, and upon
oilier domestic occasion-, old gowns,
or appard that lias been banished
from the drawing-room. Now a lady
may bt dres-ed in more rich and cost
ly fabrics at one lime than anolher
but there should be no degrees of
neatness, or order, of purity, or fresh
ness. The morning dress may be a
wholly inexpensive one, but a grease
stain or a rent is an offense lo good
taste. Many women have little idea
of flow greatly they shock the tastes
and really endanger the affections ol
their husbands by their unseemly do-
mestio apparel. There w not a man
of sense and refined feeling anywhere
who would not prefer some simp: ■
and chaste adornment for bis w ife in
the morning to any extreme splendor
at the evening ball. Let a woman by
all me.'.ns dress brilliantly < ri those
occasions that rend, r it proper; we
have no desire to abridge her privi
leges nor baffle ber instincts in this
particular; but we claim that it is
important for her, if she values ber
household serenity, that she should
give equal heed to Iter customary at*
tire. The female who goes about the
house untidily dressed has no right to
the title of woman.
TEACHING JOURNALISM.
Baltimore Sun.
Tbeyonng men who me advocating
the establishment of a ’‘class in journ
alism” at Cornell University have evi
dently very little idea what that pro
fession requires of those who follow
it. Admitting for one moment that
the richer a man’s mind is and the
greater variety of subject- he is ac
quainted with the lietter journalist lie
will make, this doe- not alter the fact
that all other thimrs must he equal
in order to in-uro success. The de
mands of a daily new-paper are so ex-
acting, and yet so varying, that no
man who had confined him-elf simply
to certain departments of knowledge
would ever he able to meet them
Picture Rev. Joseph Cook, fresh from
the study of protoplasm, sitting down
to wrestle with the humors of a Pres
idential campaign, or Prof. Hurley,
drep in the mysteries of pieadamite
life, having to dash off a leader on the
Monroe doctrine. Even if this pre-
posed class in journalism were to have
the benefit of the experience of the
oldest journalist in the country', they
would find when they got down to
work that such experience might not
suit their circumstances. Practical
and yet educated men, who can watch
and understand the signs of the time,
feel the popular pulse and know
thoroughly the relative value of news,
are the men who are needed iu jour
nalism, and their training has been
bad, not through listening to flue-spun
theories, but by hard and laboricns
work and rough contact with disap
pointment ana obstruction.
