SEE WHAT A WATERMELON CAN DO.
A Serious DilUculty Among the -Exenrslon-
Ists Averted.
A difficulty occurred on fre incom
ing excursion train yesterday after
noon this side of Union Point, which
came very nearly terminating quite
seriously to all |>arti< s concerned.
The cause ot the difficulty was as fol
lows, so lar as we have been enabled
to learn:
It seems that Wa-h Scott a colored
excursionist purchased it watermelon
for himself and wife, and while in the
act of cutting it, was approached by
a colored man in the car t.;ho de
manded a pierce in order to satisfy au
aching void within the region of l«ts-
ketdom. Scott refused tc gratily bis
appetite, whereupon liis unknown
friend used some very insulting lan
guage. Scott made an effort to strike
him, but failed. During the melee
Scott’s finger was very badly hit tun.
At this stage of the proceedings Mr
J A Hannon an eugineer of the Ga.
K Rand his fireman Mr J M llisilop
undertook to expell the combatants
front the car. In tbe meantime con
ductor Lombard was called in and
learning the facts took possession at
Scott aud quelled the difficulty. Upon
the arrival of the train at Athens, it
seems that tho l ad feeling was in
some way revived, and Scott proceed
ed to mako a lively effort to revenge
h’.m-elf upon Messrs. Hannon and
Hishop. From a slight difficulty the
fracas increased m magnitude
till it was verging upon a general
first cla-s excursion tight of the most
mixed character, knives, pistols, brick
bats and various pieces ot iron were
at once brought forth by a score
or more of the mob, aud had it not
been for the prompt action ot police
llolcomb and Birch, who were upon
the ground endear bring to quell the
fight, we feel assured that we would
now be called upon to publish a tew
