Truly the shadows of a great gluoni hath
fallen upon us. But shall we therefore tread
life’s rugged path with the head bowed down
like a bulrush ? Look ui>. r - Abave us ase
the heavens radianworlds r-of
no.sS and bflautik whose jjghfohall yet scatter
the rifted clouds and shod.its
upon ouwiiaturo pathway. «
It ia true, surrounded tff difficulties on
wc arc \ow jlissing*througb a
political crisis withoqj. a precedent dr a par- 1
aiieu, . , r.*? -:i;
- Yet, we have much to encourag* our
of the future. The President is hobly
breasting the Storm of opposition; and rising
like £ jjolliai Oibralfer above a 'sea of
daroubieSj'echoev back over the proud, wav'es
of fanaticism, which surge around, “thus
fat *sbalt thou go, and no farther. ” He
seems determined to guard the rights-of the
Southern. States, and afford them every fa
cility for assuming again their proper posi
tion in the great sisterhood of States, clothed
with equal dignity and rights. And, no
doubt, in a few months our State Govern
ment will be re-organized under the admin
istration of wise and just laws, appropriate
to the present crisis, and we shall see that
Georgia has the recuperative energy to rise
superior to all changer? ‘land maintain her
proud title 4 as the Umpire State of the
South -
Then look up; for a brighter day will
soon dawn upon our political horizon with
healing in its wings. It is true slavery is
dead, buried, and not even its most sanguine
votary would presume to prophesy the hope
of its resurrection. By its sudden abolition
the South has been impoverished—its whole
industrial economy deranged, and for a time
at least, confusion and disorder pervades
every department of labor and business.—
But even this, by wise and salutary legisla
tion, may be Tendered only a temporary ein
harassment. For surely we do not mean to
sit down fopinely under this loss—leave the
land to become a sterile waste —the homefrof
desolation antffamine, under tha-humiliating
acknowledgment that slavery is indispensa
bly necessary to the life of the South—that
we cannot live and prosper without it as
others have done. No. We are Americans
—heirs of the blood and muscle, the brains,
the bounding pulse and all the activities of
the great old Saxon heart—descendants
of the men who have made a wiiderness
oootineut to bloom **• a garden, and planted
thereon a government which, as the model of
the nations, is the political hopgpand heri
tage of the world.
That blood still flows in our veins; let it
not stagnate around a drooping heart, but
set brain and muscle to work, and demon
strate to the world that the. energy and in
telligence of the South can subordinate all
changes to her interests, control her indus
trial resources to the best advantage of all
in her midst, and come forth from the pres
ent orisia with that dignity and prosperity
which becomes her character and her histo
ry; Look up : the green grain will again
wave richly o'er your fertile fields, and the
sower find the reaper shall rejoice together.
Your bills and valleys, again whitened with
the teeming crops, shall demonstrate that
though cotton is not king, yet it is the un
failing wealth of the South, and the commis
sary-general of the world.
True to herself* and obedient to every in
stinct of her nature, the South will accom
modate herself triumphantly to the conclu
sion which has been forced upon her by the
inexorable logic of late eveuts. Though she
cannot control the turbid waters whose
surging billows have swept away her pros
perity and her wealth, yet she can rise above
the highest wave, survive the wrecks of the
storm, aud rebuild again her fallen fortunes
upon a more prosperous and permanent
foundation.
Look up: you are poor—we are all poor;
but groaniog and growling—sighing for
sympathy and puling rouud with sickly, vain
regrets tor the unchangeable past, iningied
with timid murmurings against men and
measures, will not mend your fortunes. Let
“ the dead past bury its dead," and it
to softtude and silence, and wander not in its
graveyard, like one of old, who dwelt among
the tombs wounded and bleeding. But,
with God above you, a heart within you,and
a world of activity and interest around you,
look up* and be a man in misfortune and
above misfortune.
“ Lot u» vh*n be op and £oi»§.
With a heart for an j fate;
Still achieving, etilt pursuing.
Learn to labor aedto wait."
tar The Petersburg (Ya.) Index sayß
white labor is rapidly taking the place of
black labor. “ Formerly, a white drayman,
or eartman, or hack-driver, was a sight un
known to our streets; now they share these
employments with the blacks, and eventu
ally will monopolize them.

The Chicago Jonrnal understands that
an invention has been made by a * iuzen of

steam engines. It does away with steam
boilers altogether, the propelling agent be
ing generated by a shower-bath falling ou
hot iron plates, and passing directly into the
cylinder of the engine.
A French chemist has invented for sum

kindled, they will burn with smoke or flame
a long time, with intense heat. A four

is said.
Anew and cheap material for making

M. de Mortittct Has published in a Gren
oble paper a eurious remedy for the sting of
a dangerous insect. It is the application of
the wax of the ear to the injured part. This
simple remedy, be positively asserts, will
cure the deadly stiug of a poisonous fly,
which would otherwise produce carbuncle.
Whatever may be the efficacy of this treat

substance being always at hand. Should
it not succeed, the patient will always be
in time to have recourse to a more radical
treatment.
