You ine bow much will your friends help) you, and how mqch will the Govern ment do ior you ? Somef of you have, very high expectations, and T am sorry to say «ome expfetations tbnt can not be tea lived, iam told by some of your former masters that you are expecting to give you a portion rs the land, and of the stock on their plantations. In different places, some of your brethren have a«ked me ii this were not' so, and seemed sadly disappointed when I told them this could not be done. Your masters tried very hard, making greaft and noble sacrifices to estab lish a separate independence They poured out their money like water, they gave their bravo sons, by thousands. The great amount of labors and sacrifices of your masters and mistresses for this cherished object, re dounds to tlieir honor ; yet they have failed of their object, arid after losing their money and thousands of their beloved sons, the Government has now deprived them of all of their slaves. But how is it with you ? What have you lost ? Only your chains. — What have you gained ? Blessed be (Tod, you have gained your freedom, and the free dom of all your race henceforth and forever. .(Loud bursts of'applause, and many halle lujas.) All that is left to your masters is their plantations and their manly character. They have their lands, but no sons or knowledge of their own, to work them. So, you*see, they are dependent on you to cultivate their fields for their and you are de pendent on them for of their lands, to raise a support for an i your families. Some of you may think that Providence has dealt more generously with t.hein than with you. at ft again. They have lost their independence, thtey*have lost their money, they havs lo3t aft their ftegroes, and more than .U»fe thaji a hundred thou sand graves are'filled wftfo beloved fathers, sons, and brothers; and they would gladly give all that is left to them by the Govern ment, if the gTaves would only give back their treasure; "while you having lost noth ing, absolutely nothiug worth, naming, have gaiued a treasure in your freedom, worth a life of toil and sacrifice. Whose condition is best l Who would exchange places with them ? Let woman who feels that Providence has given them the best end of the bargain, raise their hands. (To this both men and women joyfully threw up their hands.) Vou see, then, that the Government, on the one hand, leaves the laud and the stock) with your masters, while to you it gives simply your freedom. This seems to place you out in the cold; but be not discouraged, the Government has really complimented you in this. It has faith in you, too, that you will make free dom a success, so far as your support is con-1 cerned. To encourage you, I will tell you I how the old hen manages with her family. 1 As soon as the little chicks are hatched she | gets them on their feet ancf shows them how I to scratch. W heu she has fully learned I them the trade of scratching, without one 1 grain of corn, or one bug laid up for their next dinner, she takes a last- look of them, I and off she runs, clucking as she goes - I iSow little chicks, scratch or die ! ( Peals of I langht.er and display of ivory."i Did you I ever see a little chick that did not scratch J out a living? While the Government has no lands to give you, it will, through the Freedman's Bureau, furnish you protection, j schools for your children, and as far as pos-1 sible, make provision for the aged and in firm, and will exercise a general care over you, until you can take care of yourself, when Uncle Sain will say to all his black chickens, now scratch or die. (Sensation and approbation.) The Anglo-Saxon Element —We talk at random a great deal about the Anglo-Saxon Look at the names in tbe list of our American commanders-in-ebief, from the first commissioned by Washington, in 1791, down to the present time. Here we have Gen. Arthur St. Clair, a Scotch Celt; Anthony Wayne, an Irish Celt; Janies Wilkinson, Saxon or Gothic; Henry Dear born, a Welsh Celt; Jacob Brown, a Welsh Celt; Alex McComb, an Irish Celt; Win field Scott, Scotch; Geo. B. McClellan, Scotch; H. W. Halleck, Saxon; U. S. Grant, Scotch. Thus we have eight out of the ten commanders-in-chief of our armies during the last seventy-five years, whose origin is no more Anglo-Saxon than it is Tartar. Look at the Celtic names, over, that stand in the fore front of the late war: Grant, Meade, Sheridan, McPher son, Oillmore, Anderson, ‘ Terry (Welsh) Sherman (Welsh) Thomas (Welsh) Mc- Clellan. It Is a matter perhaps of minor consequence whether our great martial he roes have more Celtic than Saxon blood in their veins or the reverse, so long as they were all true Americans. But it is not out of place so let the Celt have a fair show in a field of human exertions where he is so clearly entitled to pre-efninence. The great Democratic State Con vention of Maine, comprising five hundred and jeventy‘four delegates, agreed that but for President Johnson, State sovereignty Would bat# been destroyed at all hazards. ! «r as* Cm' mUfmm.
