I' The cholera continues to make frightful [ ri vegei in several oouotries of the Old I World. In the Levant, where it first msde [ ltl ippearance, it is said tobs raging with I serened intensity. Ia Italy, tho Oiiy of m baa suffered terribly, the number of I *e«tb, up to the 12th ult., amounting to I **l, and no sign of decline being as yet I soucetble. The Island of Malta is likewise I Merely effected. There are, of court#, the I jjjit alarming rumors about the further I fpnad of the cholera. A number of places ■ j Italy, among them Rome, Barcelona, in I Cpaic and Marseilles in France, are report- have bceu attacked; but though, I cases may have ocourred in all these ■ the epidemic had, at latest aocounts, ■ u .t jet assumed alarming dimensions in ■ uj of them. I Tie deep solicitude which the Govern- Isttts of all the iufected countries, not ex* Iriiog that of Turkey, have manifested for ■us ibption of tho most effective hygienic Is..i»arc9, is a most gratifying proof of the mm progress which our age is making in fttstl reform and in civilization. The of Italy has on this occasion ft«s nobly conspicuous for its enlightened ft i. Soon after the outbreak of the cholera ft Acrona, two of the Ministers started for ft : unfortunate city, to visit the hospitals ft.j prisons, to calm the apprehensions of people, and to make suitable for the support of the widows ft., .rphans. If tho cholera should con* lotger, the King himself, and the ■:-r Ministers were likewise to proceed to superintend the proceedings and tic courage of the inhabitants. The uis distinguished himself in this way Htftfc. When, in 1854, the cholera was off numerous victims in Genoa, ftt King and his Minister, Cavour, started Htaeefor that city, and visited all the Bairtcrt decimated by the epidemic. In ft* same year, KiDg Ferdinand, of Naples, Btc from bis capital on the appearance of ft- .en, and took refuge in the island of ftcttiii. The different conduct of the two explains the different feelings with ftt£i:d to them on the part of the Italian Avery Important Order. , Huojcarteri District ok Augusta, i 4ra Division Dep’t of Qa., > Augusta, August 30th, 1865. ) Buual Orders, ) ■ No. 7. \ ■ utsviug been brought to the notice of I Brevet Major General Commandiug I parties making contracts and agree-1 Bf-U have therein named gold as the con- Beration to be paid for the performance B«*of, it is hereby ordered that, hereaf- B whenever contracts or agreements in B"t ng are entered into between parties, B« consideration therein named to be paid B«- in lawful money of the United Bites; that is. in the paper curreucy issued B : dialed a legal tender by the Gov- Bt-tnenti ■ A:i contracts or agreements heretofore into by any parties whatever with- B the limits of this District which do not to the provisions ot this order are declared null and void. The Rome (Gn ) Courier, of tho 31st ! ult., has the following in reference to crop i prospects in that section . | This section is suffering from drouth to an extent almost unprecedented. Since July 16th, {here has been but one little shower here, and then only one-fourth inch of water fell. The consequence ia, that aU corn is greatly injured, and the late corn nearly ruined; and garden vegetables and the potato crop are almost entirely cut off. One of the ~ most terrible railroad slaughters that has ever fallen to us to re cord, occurred a few days since on the Long Island Railroad. Two trains, both going at a high rate of speed, ran into each other near the village of Jamaica, causing the death of fifteen persons, and seriously if not fatally injuring many others. Another accident, although not of so fatal a nature, occurred on the Hudson River Railroad yesterday afternoon, near Haverstraw. Six cars were thrown off the track, and ofie man had both legs and an arm broken. The W ertz military commission reassem bled yesterday morning. A Mr. T. C. AJlcock testified to having seen the priso ner kill a man with, his revolver because he asked permission to go out and take a little fresh air. During the proceedings, the prisoner’s councel, taking offence at some remarks made by the court, aban doned the case and retired. A large fire in Chicago, Tuesday night, consumed Hall & Robins’ large grain elevator, containing fifty thousand bushels of grain. Loss seventy thousand dollars; fully insured. Capt. Barden, an experienced sea cap tain, left Savannah on the 22d inst. for New York, for the purpose of obtaining several light-draft iron steamers, of pecu liar construction, suitable for the naviga tion of the Ocmulgee and Alabama rivers. Jeremiah Townsend, the New Haven Savings Bank defaulter, had a preliminary hearing in that city on Saturday. To all the charges made against him—purloin ing money, making false entries, theft of gold, etc. —he pleaded “ not guilty.” The president of the Savings Bank was exam ined, as was Dr. T. B. Townsend, who, in company with detective Carlin, went to England after the defaulter. The testi mony was sufficient to warrant the court in binding him over for trial at the Sep tember term of the Superior Court, and to give bail in the sutn of $25,000. It is doubtful whether he will find bondsmen. New Haven papers notice the sudden death in that city of Paymaster Wm. A. Ingersol, U. S. Navy, aged forty years, of heart disease. Early in life he was en gaged in mercantile pursuits in New York city, but entered the navy, sixteen years* ago, as Secretary' for Captain (now Admi ral) Gregory. Subsequently he was also Secretary for Commodore Salter. Col. Thomas, Assistant Commissioner of the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands, has issued a letter to the clergymen of the State, directing them to affix the following declaration to the marriage rite of negroes: In accordance with the ordinance of God and the authority of the United States, I pronounce you to be husband and wife. A dispatch from Memphis announces the arrest, in that city, of Brigadier Geo. eral Marcus J. Wright and Colonel Looney, late of the rebel army. The arrest was made by the United States Marshal. They are under indictment for treason. Judge Trigg opens the fall terra of his court in Memphis next Monday. We presume th e cases of these gentlemen will be disposed of during the term. Mrs. Maria Grinder, wife of George Grinder, has been arrested irv Alleghany, charged with poisoning a number of per sons, at various times—-men, women and children—six of whom died. The accused has been committed for trial. She is de scribed as a woman of fine appearance and I pleasant demeanor, aged thirty years, ac cording to her own statement, although she I appears older. It is stated that previous 1 to removiug to Alleghany, some three or 1 four years ago, she resided in Louisville, Kentucky, and has also been a resident of Indiana. She is evidently a woman of much intelligence, and professes to be a Christian, having great faith in religion. Mrs. Grinder was frequently employed as a nurse, and was noted for her kindness to her patients. * The New York Post says that twenty four railroad butcheries have occurred since January 25th, the lesult of criminal negli gence. Another Difficulty.— lt is well known to fame that the present municipal authorities have awarded the levee contract to three parties whom it is reasonable to suppose, are responsible gentlemen. Major-Gener ,al Cnnby, however, has seized the levees I on the ground that they are confiscated property. How the affair will end, is not known.—iV. 0.
