jUlibhAL ANII MhhSKNfihK. My Mother’s Voice. There's music in tbe Autumn wind. Around the dripping saves; Ai i w ,;re it’ pinions stop to play, Among tbe fallen leaves. Tl -re’s meric in tbe river’s flow, Along tbe pebbly shore, W ,en all the winds have gone to sleep, Aud boughs are swayed no more. There’s mnuc in the cricket’s song 1 hear through evening shade, Aid in the low of distant herds, Kdluiuing from the glade. Th -re's mu ic ia the household tonee 1 hat greet tbe sad or gay, And in the laugh of innocence Rejoicing in its play. Bu there is music sweeter far Ia mem yrv than this— i Th * music of my mother’s voice Now in the land of bliss. A music time may never still— I hear it in my dreams. When all tbe fondness of her face Once more upon me beams. I know not what the Angels hear, la mansions in the skies— Bat there is not a sound on earth, Like mother’s gentle voice. Tbe tears are in my clouded eye, And sadness in my brain, As Nature whispers to my heart, i-'ho will not come again. A Mother ! oh, when she departs, Her like is never known ; The records of affection speak Os only, only one 1 An 1 brighter will that record grow Through all the changing years— Tl • oiteuer to the lip is pressed The cup of sorrow’s tears. True Magnanimity Most of our readers in this city have a person and knowledge of Mr. Wm. Crutch field, one of the boldest and most uneom promising l nion men, long a resident of Chattanooga, Tenn. Recently this gen tleman—wno received some hard treat ment during the war from some of the Confederate authorities, having been ar rested and imprisoned by them —makes an appeal to the Union men of Tennessee, through the Chattanooga Gazelte, not to persecute the rebel soldiers who have re* turned to their homes. AVe make the fol lowing extracts from his eloquent and pa triotic appeal: “Remember, the truly brave, noble and generous never insult and mistreat a fallen foe. When you appeal to brute force, laying law and order aside, you are at sea without rudder or compass, and will most certainly be east upon the breakers. “Will you not learn wisdom from the errors of the past? Will you force these men who, in good faith, have laid down their arms, believing in and relying fully upon the generous terms given by the mil itio-y a.ivi civii rulers, and still extended by your present Chief Executive? “]-\r shame, my fellow-countrymen; pau»o, com J n r, look well as to what vou do ‘“He that subdneth his own epiiit is greate; than the warrior that taketh a cify.” 1 “Xow that the rebellion has been crush ed. and your erring brethren having failed, submitting to the terms as bud down by our Government, do not throw impedi ments in the way, but learn to forget and forgive.
