JOHN on AY'S TRIAL.
John Gray wna golnff homo ono night,
And the snow on the ground wr *'
white,
Tho wind moaned chill through tho pine tiocs’
ranks,
And the river had overflowed its lmnks;
Tho loo-cakes raced down tho swollen tide,
And the current *ns strong, and the waters
wide; , _ ,
And out in the midst of the stream ho hoard,
As faint ns tho nine of a frightened bird,
Tho cry of a child. Ilo turned In a trice,
And saw a babe afloat on tho Ice.
The stream with connecting lee was packed,
It id, with Grnv to think was at once to act.
He throw off Ids warm great-coat to leap,
Undaunted, Into the Icy deep,
And bravely he swam, but the tide was strong,
And Ids brawny arms were tired ern long.
Thioo times the current boro him ashore,
And ho felt thnt ho cotdd strugglo no more.
"Why should I risk my life?” liesnld:
"Why should! risk my children's broad?
My babes are at home, and asleep, and safe—
hlinll 1 give mv life for this wretched waif?”
llut the t homrbt made the latiier's heart heat
warm,
And he said: "Onoo again I will bravo tho
storm I”
And he plnngod In the rlvor oneo again,
And manfully struggled with might and main.
Ho reached the Ice, and he raved tho child,
And he swam to shore through the tempest
wild:
And then lie looked, in tho palo moonlight,
On the little face tha* was oold and white,
lint alive—and he fell on Ills knees In awe,
For thi* face of Ids youngest child he saw.
And icvorontly ho bared Ids head:
"Thank Heaven I 1 did not full," he said.

Origin of Familiar PhrAsea.
“ You cannot say ‘ boo 1’ to a gooso."
When lien •Toulon, tho dramatist, was
introduced to a nobleman, tho peer wn«
so struck with his homely appearance
that ho exclaimed, “ What I younroBon
iIouhou ? Why you look us if you could
not say ‘ boo r to a goose." “Boo I’ ex
claimed the witty dramatist, turning to
tha peer and making his bow.
" He’s a peg too low," “ Taking a man
down a l>cg,” may bo traced to tho peg
ging, or marking thu drinking cup,
which was introduced by Ht. Dumitan to
olicck tho intemperate habits of the
times, by preventing one man from tak
ing a larger draught than his compan
ions. But thu dovioe provod tho means
of increasing thu evil it was intended to
remedy ; for tho most abstemious wore
required to drink precisely to a peg or
pin, whether they could soberly tuko
snoli a quantity or not,
“ Bine Hen" is the nickname given to
tlie Hlato of Delaware. Tho origin of
Ihi! term is this: Gnpt. Caldwell, nil
oilloer of tho First Delaware regiment in
the Revolution, was very fond of game
cooks, but maintained that no cock was’
truly game unless its mother wns u
“ blue Tien.” As ho was nil exceedingly
popular mail, his regiment waB calTed
“The Blue lieu," and tho term was af
terward transferred to the Hlato and its
inhabitants.

The ancient Greeks had tho following
story iis to tho origin of this proverb:
A King of Tliruco had planted u vine
yard, when ono of his bIiivob, whom ho
had much oppressed in that very work,
prophesied that lie should never taste of
llio wine produced in it. Tho monarch
disregarded the prediction, and when at
ail entertainment lie held n glassful of
his own wine, made from the grapes of
that vineyard, ho cent for tho Save, and
asked lnm what lie thought of liis
prophecy now. To which tho other re
plied, *• Muny things fall out between
thu cup and thu lip,” ami sooroely had
lie delivered this singular response be
fore the news was brought that a mons
trous boar was laying wasto the favorite
vineyard. The King, in a rage, put
down the cup which lie held in Ins hand,
and hurried out with his people to at
tack tho boar, but being too eager the
boar ruHlied upou him and killed him
without his having lasted of the wine,

Tho largest and most important real
OHtato transaction ever mado in tho city
of Mexico, probably, wns thnt closed on
November 22. Thomas K. Lewis, of
New York, purchased for capitalists of
thnt city u tract of land, over 5,000 lots
of 25 by 100 feet each, the prioo being
oyer $500,000. Tho laud lies to tho west
of tho city, extending tq tho cnstlo of
Chnpultepeo, once tho sito of Monte
zuma's pnlnco, for 300 years the residonco
and court of tho viceroys of Hpain, ami
lastly tho military eollcgo, or West
Point of Mexioo, The land is admirably
situated, fronting over 4,000 feet on the
1’uboo do la Reforma on tho north, and
5,430 feet on thu southern side. Tho
slopo is Biiflloiont to give an excellent
drainage, which is a matter of tho ut
most importance in the city of Mexico.
Tho view is picturesque, uml the climate
will iusuro a green Bwnril, ami a mag

company intend to begin by eroding an
Americnu hotel, with nil modern im

Pasco—the Broadway of the city. They
will sell no unimproved lots, but will
buihl superior residences along the Pasco
to bo sold on the annual payment plan.
A number of Mexican gentlemen aro al
ready in negotiation for residenocs. Tho
company expect fo have their purchase
the most fashionable part of the city in a
few years, as they claim it will be tho
healthiest and most beautiful. Mr.
Bfepheu D. Hatch, a noted New York
architect, Col. Samuel Keefer, and T. B.
Laura are among those interested in tho
now company. They value their pur
chase at $2,500,000.—N. Y, Star.

small incision and removed the pin. It
was five inches in length, and Hart
