i ars a' great to any houses end
morn families yet, but vary fotv
I" homes.'' At least such homes as peo
ple like to stay in.
The poet remarks: “Bo it ever so
IftuM, there's no place like homo.”
a S«t the truth is, there are many places
liked better than home. Poets are apt
to sing about what they think should be
and ought to be, but not so much about
what really is.
•• Homo'’ Is about the last place some
husbands and fathers oare to stay in.
llecnuso the chimney smokes, the chil
dren cry, the wife is out of temper, tho
tapther-ln-law is more so, the house is
dull, the old grudge hoops coming to
tho surface, ho can’t smoko, and thero.
arc too many ” chores” to do.
“l.'omo" Is tho place whore. In tho
morning just I efore he goes down town,
sho nsks liim for some money, and ho is
'delighted to hear her and says: •* Why,
my uonr, why don’t you do so oftener?
I do do. iarc you wrong mo thus. You
do, indeed!” ’
" Homo” is tho lilaoo to which atonrly
eve she brings ail tho glincracks and
things sho has bought on Fourteenth
street, which sho hardly knows whore to
put now sho has thorn.
Homo” is tho very place where ho
can swear ns much ns ho plonsos when
things go wrong, in business outside,
with men whom it doesn't pay to swonr
before. Tho plnce whore ho enn got
mad and jump right up and town if ho
pleases. Or sit in the corner by tho
•‘aacrod hearth” and grumble and
growl anti snlll' and nmfT and snoor at
all she says or does from tea tlmo till
bod time.
“Homo” Is tho sweet rotroat to which
ho comes nt two o'clock in tho morning
nn lodge and other nights, witli onostale
and extinguished cigar stump in his
mouth, two In Ills pockets and interiorly
fnll of vinous lluids.
“Homo" Is tho placo whoro sho says
to the caller sho hntos: “How glad’ I
am to see you!" and tho oallcr returns
tho oomplimont with a lto of equal forco
and weight.
“Homo” Is tho placo whoroln burg
lars break in and steal, and robbers rob,
nnd sneak thieves steal overcoats from
tho hall rack—whoro the “holp" gets
drunk or mad nnd lonvos suddenly.
ltoys like homo to cat In, to sleep in,
to rdielter themselves Irom the rain In,
ami to go to when nobody else will have
them around. Save on such occasions,
and when impelled by such wants, tho
o nimon boy Imd rattier be anywhere
elso than homo; Imng.ng around cor
ners, lonliug at tho grocery, robb'n
orchards, sail ng, skating, riding, crawl
ing under circus tents, long sick with
btoArst clgnr, s'nning oats, nnd going
homo from clmreh with the girls.
(■iris do not like to stay nt homo any
more tlinn boys do, nnd got nwny from
it nt every possiblo opportunity and
make all sorts of oxouses to do so.
Of course a man’s family Is a groat
comfort to him. Kvory ono says it
<im.iltip he. and tho man himself thinks
it ought to. bo.
.. And so docs sho think It ought to ho
i\pw that half a do/un sons and daugh
ters, big and little, uro hors tcMuke euro
of.
Only tho thought will pop into ills
hoad at times, how froo from earn nnd
light-lienrlod, and whnt a good time
generally lie had ore lie was a mar
ried man. A«d elm was quite down
hearted ye terdny when a young indy
friend oiti'o.l, and in a momentary out
bent remarked to her: •• Pon’t yot
evor gst married!" And the younglnily
who is secretly engaged, wont ponder
ing all tho way homo.
Ono trouble about “homo” is that tlio
butcher knows where it is when he
would cniloet his bill, and so does the
baker, the grocer, them Ikinati, tho gas
man, tho, coal man tho tnx gatherer and
tho cliAroh' bog-gar.
llow tho small boy d os liko to hear
ono or tho other of his parents say:
••Now y on go right straight homo or
I’ll lick you within an inch of your life.”
“ Home” is tho p’aoo where tlio small
boy is spanked in his Infnnoy and
“whaled” In Ids youth. Often he
thinks also Hint theru is “no place like
hopift” to run nwnv from. — A'. 1'

A few days ago n young man in busi

this city, and was congratulated on his
ucw venture in business. In the course
of Tho conversation tlio clerical brother
expressed liis opinion as not in favor of
the young man keeping open on Sunday.
“ No,” said the young man, “ I don't
want to keep npnn on Sunday, but will
probably liave to. I work hard nil tho

—There has been some cold weather
