(Camden, Me., Herald.)
The moral and Irpil responsibility, of
(treats, in the care of their children l«,
fortunately,attracting the serious attention
of the better portion of the entire country.
The many instances of cliilil-heatinp. op-
prealon, and other forms of cruelty which
have come to light, demand that something
be done; and It Is gratifying to know that
the people are becoming thoroughly arous
ed. Whether the cruelty be in the form
of physical violence or physical neglect
mattera ’ not—the prlnciplo in both
cases is the same. The man nr woman who
neglects his or her own health may he par
doned, as the consequence fall upon the
individual alone,; hut tiio patent or guard
ian who permits the inroad, of disease
utton the innocent ones il> pendent upon
him for protection. Is criminally liable
in the sight of Ool. however lie may
appear in the eyes of men. There nre,
however, parents that intend to care for
their children, but who, through careless
ness or the urgency of oilier duties, permit
them to become the innocent victims of
disease. Buch parents may he guileless of
intentional wrong, but the disastrous
results Upon their children are just as
great.
These are truths which must be manifest
to every worthy parent ami es|iet'Ullv in u
vicinity where the unknown effect* of the
atmosphere, the water and tlie gem r,il ten
dency to malaria are so great. There are
many families in this locality who have
been called upon to mourn untimely losaes
even when the greatest care was exercised ’
but the experience of one only will be
given : It Is that of the late W. U. Tinunas
The children were all moat promising Inn
for some unexplained reason their hearth
and strength seemed to gradually lessen
until their friends feared they were
the victims of consumption. One bj
one they sickened and died un
til three had departed and two of the
surviving brother* were also taken ill
Their nnmes were Hermon and Kdward
Hertnon, however, seemed llie stronger of
the two; and while his younger brother
was confined to the house constantly and
to his bed much of the time, Hermon was
able to be about but in so weak n condition
that he had no desire to play. Kddte's
symptoms were terrible! He found diftl
culty in retaining food upon his stomach
was restless and irritable, and out of hla
head frequently. At various times three
different physicians visited him; mid each
one told hla friends he could not
live. He finally got ao low that death
was only considered a matter of a few
days. At that critical time hla elder broth
ers, aroused almost to Ihe pitch of desper
ation by the death* that had so recently
occurred, and the other one atirlug them
in the face, resolved to take the case into
their own hands. They accurdlngly did so
and secured a remedy that was being uni-
versally used, and began giving it to him
Its effect at first wns slight, but any lm
movement was considered * good .symptom
By degrees his strength returned; lies wns
able to eat with a relish, then walk about
the house; and filially be regained com
plete health ami strength. The hoy wa>
eo rejoiced over his recovery that
accompanied by the editor o'f
this paper, he went before Justice
Charles K. Miller and made oath to the
facts of hit sickness as above related, and
thai he was restoro I to perfect health by
the use of Warner's Safe Kidney and
Uver Our*. How, Edward Thoms*' par
enls, while they lived, undoubtedly, pro
vided faithfully for the wants of al> the'r
children; and yet the seeds of disease hsd
token deep root. Their care In one direc
tion had been counteracted by unknown
carelessness in another. Their love wns
sincere, lint wholly misdirected. They
ilionld have known that children are Just
in liable to kidney nnd liver diseases ns
grown up people, and that the fulallty of
Bright's disease of tile kidneys is just as
great among little children as with
ndults. This is a serious subject. Heredi
tary traits; tlie after consequences of
measles and scarlet fever, diphtheria and
passing troubles which so easily become
chronic, til demand the greatest nnre and
canton. No ct«e of cholera infantum
measles, scarlctinn, nr diphtheria wns ever
virulent while the child’s kidneys nnd
liver were healthy. It would simply l>e an
impossibility. These important organs of
body are just forming within the child and
growing with its growth; and they can be
‘.. ained to strength and healtli as rapidly ns
Ihe little mind can he trained to truth ami
n tiriaHt n*w«
The importance of carefully watching
Ihe slightest troubles of the child, nnd ea-
pecinily those affecting the kidneys and
liver, cannot be too strongly emphasised.
Children respond so readily to the proper
remedies ami are so sensitive to disease,
that it is a sin to deprive them of one at
the risk of incurring the other. By a ju
dicious treatment these essential organs
can be developed so that a strong constltu
tion, able to resist the inroads of disens*
through coming years, shall be the result.

—The Missionary Conference held at
Calcutta at the beginning of the year
determined to attack the praotice, which
is almost universal among families of
high caste, of marrying Indian children
in early infancy. ‘The missionaries will

would thus in all oases interpret the
