MAY 24, 1883. The Cedar to* h Advertiser says. “The Tax-Collector of Polk coun ty will alert on hie lust round on Tuesday, Jane 6th." If the Tux- Oolleetore of Other counties follow >Mit we had bettor shot up shop at thia season. This remark does not apply to the Constitution. The foim of yellow fever, now infesting the city of Havanan, Cuba, is said to be very violent, and hence, faal. Vigilance is the price of safety. Watch out upon the w*tch tower slid keep it away from this country for mercy's aake. The expenses of the called ses sion of the legieUture, to count the vote and ins all the new Gov ernor, amounted to about $7,500, This added to the expences of the faneral of the late Governor Stephens mates the death of that great and good man cost the people of Georgia, in money alone, a seat fortune for a poor worthy man, THKNKOKO PKOMJCM, The negro question, as now mooted, is but iu its incipienny. It seemed that the arbitrament of tho sword settled his status ]>er- manently, but so soon as ho be came a factor in politics, and whatever influence be could yield, he becamo a boun of contention, and bis present status lias boon decided for him, both by his best friend's int rests, and his own necessities, and thus he has moved along in the even tenor of his way un'il now, aud a new or der of things is fast springiiig.up dial may disturb his* autonomy very much. The question now is what shall we do with the negro? Not so much from the peaceful shades of*thc south as from the realml of northern discomfiture. From the eold bleak shores of Maine to the majestic bosom of the Bio Grande a new quostior is being agitated, and wo of tho south happily understand the B'tuation, aud can well abide the time and await the moving of the waters, aud surely we will be hold the Salvation of the Lord. A large percentage of the people of tie United States have held, and will hold that ed ica'ion is the key note for the settlement •f the negro problem, but wc are inclined to the opinion that eight een years experiment is sufficient to test the merits of any question, and with all the f ou lay of time, money and patienoe, we Huhniit tbs' the negro, collectively, is but little improved in his status, and swrely voce in merit as a citizen, or tractable reliable laborer. Ah to the necesity or desirability of disposing of him entirely from the surface of the enrtli, as has been suggested by either the three ways proposal it will l>e found at present simply a sentiment, and of no solid support among reas oning men. However, Fred Doug lass, a free nrgro that used to run • paper way up in New York, is of tbe opinion thst absorption is the plan, and that ultimate unifica tion of the races would redound to ilie benefit of each. ( perhaps that is what is meant when cer tain men speak of building up a new and strong p«rty.) The American people must have some kind of excitement al ways before them, aud this negro question may be a new kind of meteor Bhooting athwart the hor- ison of politic! that, like many others, will burst aud leave a deeply profound darkness. Still it wonld perhaps l>e well to keep one eye upon 'he course tho cur rent is taking. Itmsyyei require more statesmanship to adjust the problem than has been muuifisted iu tbe leaders of parties for t h" last score or more of years, and the part our leaders will have to play will be to s'eady the vess 1, they A Mini Wln> in llix Own (li'iiliilfntliciv A young folio xr cut west, with ^ plenty of time ami genius, has figured out how a man can become his oern grandfather, and this is tho way he dooH it: “I married a widow who had a grown up daughter. My fa her visited our homo very often, fell in love with my daughter and married her. So my father bn came my son-in-law, and iny step daughter my mother, because h!io married my father, Somo tint" afterward my wife had a son. He is my lather's brother-in-1 iw and my uncle, for ho is the brother of my stepmother. My father's wife namely, iny stepmother, had a son. Ho is my brother, and at the same time my grandchild, for he is the son of my daughter. Mv wife is my grandmother, because she is my mother's mother, I :v n my wifns husband and grand child at the same time, and as 1 the husband of a person's grand mother is his grandfather, I am tny own grandfather," Acnnit ree Notes. A hard ~ tiistln with general grnon has boon going on for sev eral weeks. The common opin ion is that if tho May grass is subduad success is ours. Indus try aided by fine weather bus given us tho victory. Wheat promises a fair yield, Oats 1 )ok tine, and is a con siderable item of thin yours crop. Tho bud worm is doing con siderable damage to coi n on low lands. It is thought there is a larger potato crop put out than iisul. Honey time h is come, and jt is very rich and line. May cherries and mulberries are on hand, and the ends of last year and this meet and tie. A now post office is to bn es tablished between Now Hope and Huntsville. A now school house has been built near Aeorutroojft full school is export ul during the summer term. If any substantial bouefit is derived from public schools in this beat I have beuii too dull to see it. The people depan 1 too much upon the public term. Children scarcely regain in this term what they have forgotten si nee the last. Dr. Orr recom mends the appropriation of more money to make »t successful, but I would differ with him. The moro you tax the people the more they will depend upon the pub lic schools, and I cannot see sub stantial benefit and general satis faction both from high taxation. I do not attach any blame upon tho makers or executors of the public sellout law, but I do be lieve it has fallen short of the da sh o and expects 1 ion of both. The public school system is but in its infancy. Will the next legisla ture improve on it? Thinker. Death of Lydiu Pinklmnt.
