Paulding New Era. By JAMES BRM'KKNRIlHiK ft f«. DALLAS, GA., MAY 30, 1883. It ia very kind and fatherly in the Constitution to give the cot ton tompresa men, and the deni ed* I* the staple of Savannah a eolnmn lecture about their naaghty ways. Usually tne evils resulting from all such short sightedness as is averred by the Constitution man to the business interests of a city as large as Sa- correct themselves. A Pensylvania man has applied fir a pension because he I»4 a tooth during, the war. He d»ea not appear ‘ to have lost any "ahoelr anyhow. Next thing we know men who lost their charac ter duriug the war will apply for [tensions. Let ns recuperate a little ere the passage of this latter clause as law, or else the country will lw more baukrupt th»n Turkey at the end of the late Russo-Turkish war, or Arnbi after his adventure. More Pine Oats. Mi. 0< o. W. Ragsdale, of Dal les, obtained from the agricultu ral department about one half piut of "Burt" oats, and sowed them apout the 6th. of April, 1881, surd the yield was thirteeu bun dles, wkihh made one bushel. The following February,16th, 1882 this bushel was sown in a peach orchard, thin land, near residence, subject to (he depredations of calves, chickens, etc., anl about the first of June the crop was harvested, and what from all los ses were saved measured exactly forty-ive bushels. Mr, Ragsdale says they are entirely free from rust This is a good record. Mr. Ragsdale is now mowing his clo ver and grass, which looks as ex- hubsrant and sweet as any clover of a higher latitude. Any farmer of Panlding county, or any other county of North Georgia, especi ally where there is a trace of lime in the soil, can make clover and grass unto independence, Try it. It only costs a mere trifle compar ed with the amount of labor ex pended in cotton raising. All the gush about the Democ racy eUcting a President next year is as silly as it is too previ ous. Such confident assertions from the foremost men of the par ty and press have heretofore en thused the masses too ea ly to hold out until the proper time for enthusiasm and work, and the re sult has uuiformly been, first in difference and next defeat. While the opositc party have been qui etly and industriously, liko beav ers, undermining the beaut : ful and glorious super structure, the air oaatle, and like the air they have proven too transparent to support even a thought with men who figure more and en huso less. We offer the present attitude of Tammany as an illustration. Be hold how it ia p ssible for one acrnpulous man may be made by pircnmatances the very pivot up- *ou which the whole thing may turn, for success or defeat. Were the general elections of the s’aies to take plans this (all, and a President to he .sleeted, it ia reas- MMfde io aay the pu y would ■Weep (he country, but not so. The election for President ia yet eighteen months off, and who knows what a day may brir g forth, Who knows what contingencies may arise? Whether there are any more Gniteau’s. What fohn Jtelly’s fancy may prompt. What the Irish question may yet de- galop. How the n*gro question, BOW absorbing ihe minds of mauy fnstf<iniauB may result, and wheli- nr w« are to have au< ther Demo- eratia Congress that will disgrace { '(self i* thn eyes,of its own party »y rashmwa and folly, especially upon the grea est present issue, the tariff. Wheth-r the right man js nominated, who when elec ed has the gum in him to claim, and [lie grit in lijm to hold tho office regardless of the returning boards —but wa shall see. At present the current of pivil liber y seems tp look democratic ward, for the ship of state that rides upon its bosom ever and anon, A wJViiitig to rmr merchants who don't advertise: An Eastern merchant, who never advertised, was found lying dead on the coun ter in his store reern ly. It is thought the body had been there several days before being discov ered, The above will not apply to the raerchnnts of Dallas. We send out the New Era better sustained by local advertising, in propor tion to the space we have, and the business of Dallas, than any pa per which cornea into our office— so. And just here we will take occasion to say we are compelled to add a quire or so of paper ev ery few weeks to our already handsomo young list. BRUIN AT HOME. The | .adie’s Memorial Associ ation of Thomasville proposes to take stops at once toward raising a fund to be devoted to the pro posed monument to Georgia’s he ro dead, whose remains lie at rest in the Confederate cemetery at Winchester, Virginia. A festival at an early day is among the probabilities.—Sav. News. Let the monument fever sud denly subside for the present, and let ns pay attention to those more pressing matters at home. Suppose the money taised for t’>e monument first be appropriated to the redemption of almost ex tinct monnds, and indeed cemete ries occnpied too by the brothers of those over whom it ia propos ed to build a monument. The wild brier, the thorn, the thistle dead leaves, (fit companions to the silent occupants underneath the sod) and broom sedge, (em blem of forsaken and forgotten) meet the eye in many the city of the dead of the poor confederate soldier. And it is of your fathers, brothors and sons, who sleep in the graveyard at Marietta, Ga. we now esdecially speak. Notice to its sadly neglected couilition, having been called by that ster ling paper, the Marietta Journal Oar rising generation must learn that there are threo kinds of sol dier’s cemeteries, vis: The Nation al, kept up by all; the southern soldiers, kept np by a few, and another southoru soldie r’s ceme tery that was, but is not now, hence kept up l>y none.
