Paulding New Era.
Ity JAMES llKKCKKKKIDCK ft CO.
DALLAS, GA.. JULY 5. 1883.
A Swing Aronnd the Circle.
We boarded tl»e train at Dallas
last Saturday afternoon (or that
most thriving and energetic city
liome, and from our observations
of the crop prospects nnd the
spirit of enterprise 011 the line of
the new rjad intermedia's, wt
h rewith present to our readers
our impressions founded from
close observation. Also we made
a flying trip to Atlanta via the
Borne Express and returned by
Why of the E. T. V, A Ga. road
The crops cf Paulding County,
both off trom and close to the
railroad are ih the main clean and
thoroughly cultivated, and are
now almost generally laid by.
Whether Ihmi thorough and deep
cultivation, tli" character of the
soil. or propitious seasons, it
• : ''nVtsrs not, the eppoa-snce of
our present growing crops, and
the result of th« already harv st
ud grain crops surpass anything
upon tho line of the several roads
OV*-r which we passed, without
perhaps it is the oat crop of Polk
county, contiguous to tho road.
From Rookmnrt, that peaceful
little villa in Polk Couuty, mis
led down by ihe banks of a beau-
.. tiful little stream, and r s ing un
der the aegis of a grand oil
Ihoantaiu full of slate, the cotton
and gross are in deadly conflict,
with the beta strongly in favor of
the'graea. We wondered where
are the forme:s? over the hills «ut
of view, or gone to some conven
tion. Dry, dry dry, was written
upon the faoe of every uill, and
t he gentle July zephyrs are not
irisk enough to displace the man-
. tie of dost that obscures the wont
ed verdure of all vegetnti tu. The
struggling com blades are twisted
into shoe strings, nnd tough ns
bear grass. Cotton is sick, with
a low type of fever, contracted
.like, many other ailments peculiar
to human, through neglect and
want of pure wa'er and nourish
ment. Both may yet survine, but
the prognoses is doubtful. Arri
ving in Borne upon schedule time,
it wad indeed surprising to see so
many evidences of thrift in the
cit/, though her merchants at
this season are in the throes of a
laboring ennui. Squatting upon the
hills in the very apex of her ordss
eyed rivers,' Borne is lookiug
forward and backward (mostly
baokward toward Forrestville) for
a display of what a people can do
in the uear future towards enlarg
ing her bordois and concentrating
many more millions in capitol in
her manufacture s aud commerce.
Borne is alive if it is close aud
sultry, and the mountain city,
with its cross-eyed livers, is we 1
organized under a wholesome mu
nicipal government, ami in the
near future will spread next larg
est banner to the breeze iu North
Georgia.
From Borne to Kingston, np
the beautiful vall-y of the Eto
wah, following ihe very margin
of that placid little muddy river
we n< xt. observed. The farming
interests in that section are cer
tainly looked to with zeal and en
ergy and faithfulness. Planters
in that vioinity certainly are not
accustomed to giving waiver notes
for corn, meat and hay, which
have been imported from the regi
ons of the Ohio and Tennessee
rivers. Fins s‘o k.well reined up,
with steady tramp along straight
r^wa of black sleek corn and cot
ton, and in the bright sunlight
new hoes wore seen gleam im:, as
brawny arms raised them from
the rich loam, aud the piiturosqm
scenery from river to mountain
and beyond made us feel better.
The Borne railroad is tbs iden
tical trunk line in point of oose
anl comfort in travelling that it
was thirty years ago, save that by
some strange metamorphosis the
iron of the trao'c has become
thicker from us-, inversile to the
natural Jaws of—railroads. Tie
ltomc Express leaves for Atlanta
most opportunely for the benefit
of nay dyspeptic who may chance
to be altoard (just after break fas )
The ilip over the road is good
exercise. From Kingston to Car-
tersville, and to Acw»rth gr aving
crops are alsn suffering for rain in
a sultry July’s sun, and every
days drought is cutting] off tho
profits that might h i ve boe<, \ •
worth looks just as if she hud
turned her back i pon Dallas for
getting np * railroad of her own
aud claiming her legitimate trade,
and has about gone to sloop fiom
the rest she is enjoying.
At Marietta everybody was
down at the depot iu waiting to
board the ex) less for Atlanta, for
the dual purpose of fleeing the
heat of down aud getting some
ice beer. Marietta possesses all
tbe material advantages of any
other summer u»d winter resort,
besides which her |>lnn of con
struction is exceptional, and with
all her advantages not tho least
is the refined and the cultivated
society that leuds its charm all
around. Marietta is proverbial
for the open hospitality of her
citizens, pure air and oold limpid
watei aud—aud—aud—p r e 11 y
girls.
Dry, Dry, Dry, oh! for rain, a
trash moving rain; a day soaker,
was the ory all round, aud surely
the parched and parching fields
gave cause for the refraiu that
came back to our ears from Borne
to Atlanta, Arriving in Atlan'a
wo apologised for having intruded
ourself np >n the town, and sol
emnly promised to leave on tbe
next train, which after five hours
and Mire- minuites was made up
iu the yard, and after the conduc
tor, by the aid of a cop, ejected
a very sick, and a very drnuk,
and a very beligerent youug man
from his oab the long train pull
ed out at 8 o'clock f»r Dallas, ut

important incidents on the way,
