* The Young Men or Ike South. I linvo visited no town in the South, niyn M. Quad, without making it a special point to sit down with represen tative young men, to oak about them, and to inquire of their past and future. I linvo visited almost every town ami eity in nine Southern States, and yet I never saw n quarrel between young men; never saw ore nrri stod; nenr heard one sponk disrespectfully of the North, nun never saw but two tbo worso for liquor. On the col it ran-, I have found them everywhere as at Vicksburg. They may drink a glass of beer with you, aiat they would certainly rcseont an insult, lmt to find an idler or pcnco-dinturbcr among , I limn is a rare thing. In a city like Vicksburg the poorer cluss of young men are the bono ami sinew of the mills ninl factories; the educated class are in stores and olilccs, just be ginning law, or medicine—agents, travel ers and speculators. Tt is wonderful how many young men nro managers of mills and factories, and in positions of responsibility, They remember that the war impoverished tlui country and niado it necessary for them to go to work. Whatever tho strugglo was in tho beginning, it was over long ago, nnd tho young men of tho Mouth neither dread work nor hold labor in con tempt. It is a raro thing to find an idler, it is just ns rare (o ('mil a young mini who will admit that ho is discouraged. Ho has great faith in whnt the future will hriug, ami ho has the pluck to faco all disasters of thu present. While he cannot make a living ns easily as his father did, lie will make it, and feel a pride in having the talent and muscle to enrthle him to do so. To know him is to like him. Ho is courteous, gentlemanly, lmnornhle and big-hearted, ami it is the young mail whose enthusiasm is making the whulo Mouth boom as never before. An Kdllor’s Joke. Oakcy Hull tells tho following story of Mayor Harper, of New York oily. The Mayor, ho says, was a advocate of temperance. While in otllcehis puli-, fishing firm was issuing a ImoJ: on Texas IrnVelf bv George W. Kendall, founder of tlio New Orleans JHcat/tinc. One morning Kendall, who was a famous joker. Called to see Mayor Harper lit the Citfr Hall, Hml found him engaged wit IP a committee of a lteohahito Tomjtcranco Union. Kendall put his head ill the deyr and said: “Murry you uru engaged 'Mayor, and can't kcop that littlo ap pointment with mo at the Ameriuai del bar; hut enmo over an soon ua you eau and I will keep tho mint juleps cold." Ho saying ho vanished, leaving tho ladies c.f tho^ committee looking daggers at the Mayor, who infelicitous- ly said: “Oh, that is my friend Ken dall, of New Orleans. There was no appointment, and I never drink mint juleps.” The ladies coughed and grow inure "doggery," for tho milliner and method of Kendall had been very natu ral and sincere. Some men have such bad blood that the wonder ii :t docs not poison the mosquitoes who come to bite them. The rich led color of good blood is owing to the iron which is present. Hlood winch has not enough iron in it is always unsatisfactory. The poi son in whose veins it circulates cannot be said to enjoy good health. The efforts of expert-chemists to produce a preparation of iron which cran be assimilated with the blood have resulted in that perfect preparation which is an important part of Brown’s Iron Bitters, ft is the only one which freely enters into the blood. It is the only one which accomplishe« the desired good. Telegraphio anecdotes being in order reminds ns of a dispatch which some years ago a busines man in Boston sent to hia correspondent in New York, requesting him to have n room reserved for him at tho hotel, as he should come on that afternoon. Arrived late at night he stood serenely behind the crowd at the old Astor House who were registering their names, oven till the clerk began to turn applil cants away for lack of room—assured that hia dispatch in advance must have secured accommodation, but was sur prised and indignant that no order U« a room had been received and was obliged to hunt np lodgingB for tho niyht else where. Early next morning, in response to the demand if his dispatch had been re ceived, his correspondent replied in the affirmative and that a store-house had Ixsen hired for him in Beaver street aj ordered. “A store-house! I never ordered ■ store-house.” The dispatch was produced. It rend! “Shall bo on to-night; have room U a store-house secured at once.” Application at the telegraph offioo re vealed the foot that the yonng woman who received the message as it camo slowly from the wire, supposed the oper ator had been abbreviating and she there fore corrected (?) the spelling of the mes- sage, which originally read: “Have room in Astor House secured at once ” The division of A-stor and addition of an o produced quite a different result than was desired.
