THE HIGHEST AUTHORITY. Vpom a Rnklect off Vital Utemt Eff- (Mflnf the Welfare off All* The following remarkAble letter from one of the loading and best known scientific writers of the proeent day is specially signifi cant, and should bo of unusual value to all readers who desire to keep paco with the march of modern discoveries and events: “ A general demand for reformation is one of the most distinctive characteristics of the nineteenth century. The common people, at well as the more enlightened and refined, cry out with no uncertain voice to be emancipa ted f r m the slavery of conservatism and su perstition which has hold the masses in gross ignorance during a large portion of the world's history, and iu the time of the 'Dark Ages 1 camo near obliterating the lost glim mer of truth. Dogmatic assertions and blind empiricism are losing caste among all (unsses of all countries. People are beginning to think for them selves, and to regard authority much less than argument. Men and women are no longer willing that a few individuals should dictate to them what must bo their senti ments and opinions. They claim tho right to solve for thomsolves tho groat questions of tho day, and demand that the general good of humanity shall bo rospoctea. As tho re sult of this general awakening wo see, on every hand, unmistakable evidences of refor matory action. People who, a few years ago, ondured suffering tho most intense in tho namo of duty, now realize the utter fool ishness of such a course. Mon who wore under tho Ixindago of bigoted ad visors allowod thoir health to deitart; suffered their constitutions to become undorminod and finally died ns martyrs to a false system of t reatment. There are millions of people filling untimely gravos who might havo lived to a green old ago had their original troubles been takon in timo or properly troatod. Thoro are thousands of pcoplo to-day thoughtlessly enduring the first symptoms of somo serious malady and without the slightest realization of the danger that is before thorn. They havo occasional headaches; a lack of appetite ono day and a ravenous ono tho noxt, or an unaccountable feeling of weariness, sometimes accompanied bv nausea, and attribute all theso troubles to tho old idea of a slight cold or malaria. It is high time that pooplo awoko to a knowledge of tfio seriousness of theso matters and emancipated thomsolves from tho professional bigotry which controls thorn. When this is done and when all olamas of physicians become liberal enough to exclude all dogmas, havo that it is thoir duty to cure disease as quickly, and as safoly os possible; to maintain no other iwsi- tion than that of truth honestly ascertained, and to indorse and recommend any remedy that has be n found U9ofuI, no matter what its origin, thero will he no more nuarroling among tho doctors, whilo there will bo great rejoicing throughout tho world.” “ I am well awaro of the censure that will lie meted out to mo for writing this lottcr. but 1 feel that I cannot l>e true to my honest convictions unless I extend a helping lmnd and indorso all that I know to ho good The extended publications for tho past fow years, and graphic descriptions of difforontdisoasos of tlio kidneys and liver havo awnkenod tho medical prof ession to tho fact that theso dis eases are greatly increasing. Tho treatment of tho doctors lias been largely experimental, mul many of thoir patients liave died wliilo they were casting about for a romedy to cure them." “It is now ovor two years since my atten tion was first called to tho use of a most won derful preparation in tho treatment of Bright's disease of tho kidneys. Patients hail frequently asked mo about tho romedy, and I had hoard of remarkable cures effoclcd by it, but like many others 1 hesitated to recom mend its use. A personal friend of mino had been iu poor health for somo time, and his application for insurance on his life hod been rojcctod on account of Bright’s disease. (Jhomtcal and microscopical ex amination of liii urino revealed the presence of largo quantities of albumen and granular tube casts, which confirmed tho correctness of tho diagnosis. After trying all.tho usual romedies,! directed him to use this preparation and was greatly tmrpriuod to ohsorvo a decided inprovemont within a month, and within four months no tubo casks could ho discovered. At that timo tl\oro was present only a trace of albumen, mid ho felt, as he expressed it, ‘perfectly well,’ and all through tho influence of Warner’s Safe Cure, tho romody ho usod.” After this I prescribed this modicino in full doses in b >th a JUfco and chronic nephri tis* (Bright’s disease) and with the most sat is- fa torv results. My observations were neither small in number nor Lustily mado. They ex tended ovor several months and embraced n large number of cases which have provod so satisfactory to my mind, that 1 w ould ear nestly urge upon my professional brethren tho importance of giving a fair and patient trial to \\ amor’s Safe Cure. In a large class of ailments where the blood Is obviously iu an unhealthy state, osjucially whoro glun.lu- lar engorgements anil Inflammatory eruptions exist, indeed in many of thoro forms of chronic in lisitosition in which there Is no evidence of organic mischief, but whore the general lionilh is depleted, the fane sallow, tho urine colorod, constituting the condition in u liicli the patient is tmid to lie * bilious,’ tho advantage gained by tho use of this remedy is remarkable, in Heights disease it seems to act as a solvent of albumen; to soothe anil heal the inflamed membranes; to wa-h out the epitholial delirls which blocks up tho tub* nil uriniferi, iui I to prevent a dostiuctivo metamorphosis of tissue.” " Belonging as X do to a branch of tho pro fession that noltevoH that no ono Bcliool of medicine knows nil tho truth regarding tho l real mont of disease, and Icing independent enough to select any remedy that will ruliovo my iwtients, without reference to the source from whence it comes, 1 mil glad to acknowl edge and commend the merits of this remedy thus frankly. Respectfully ynurs, It. A. GUNN, M. D. IJean and Professor of Surgery, United States ModicaJ College of New York; editor of Medical Tribune; Author of Gunn’s New and Improved Hand-ltook of llygieno and Domestic tyedicino, etc., etc. A Double Ship, To build a ship so tlmt in case of ncoi- dont to tho bow tho stern half can bo in stantaneously separated from it, nud can oontinue tho voyage securely and easily on its own account, is tlio latest contri bution to tlio li«t of safeguards against tlio dangers of tlio sea. Tho idea is Tlmt of a German inventor, and is set forth with somo detail in tlio Hamburg Courier, which sees no reason why it should not bo entirely feasible. It would require many departures from tho pres ent moilo of building vessels, as well as from their internal arrangement and equipment; but tlio inventor asserts Unit, as a whole, a vessel so oonstruolcd could bo fully as seaworthy mul swift as any built on the present plan, and would lie twice as secure against disaster.
