FRIDAY FEBRUARY 19, 1892.
A Boy With a Future.
it was a cold morning. The
jpople in the village were almost
frozen, and at tho little red cottage
in the hollow, where tho wind had
free sweep across acres of mondmv
land and hillside, {it was a great
•deal worse.
But when Ben Preston jumped
out of lied to build tho firo for lii»
mother, it was not the cold which
worried him most; it was heeatist
he knew that in tho clipboard then
was only scanty provision.
' The Indies who brought sewing
to his mother coidd not come up t

could she cross these heavy drifts

“Well," says Ben to ,himself, u

up, “1 don’t see any way but to
lute the support ot the family
myself for u few days. I can’t do
much, but maybe j enn help :i hit.
.i ll try, that's wlml!" And lit
drew himself up, looking very
innnly.and strong.
When the little breakfast was
icnten - it was nothing hut corn
cakes with butter, and milk

carried in u loud of wood nud u
pail of water, and then began to
button up jib coal,
“Not going out, Bon?” asked hi
mother.
“Yes mother; I’m going to look
for n job in the yillugo.”
“But, Ben, you'll be almost fro

“Think not, mother. {I am
strong as a young horse, and it’s u

“ You're a good boy, Ben,” said
the widow, witli u deep sigh, and a
Binile at tho bright face.
“Ought to be; got a good niotli-

Aud then putting on his old hut, ho
darted into tho sited far his snow

“well, I might,” responded tin

enough for the job'?”
“Just you try me,” said Ben, We-

‘All right, sonny, Make a good
