MAKING PAUPERS OF
AMERICAN TOILERS IN
THE MIDST OF PLENTY-
To publish to the world that tha
Americans need protection from
competition with any peoples on
the globe is to admit the poverty of
our resources, or the incapacity of
our people, Both of these admis
sions are so false that if outsiders
would make them as accusations
they would be treated as criminal
ly libelous.
No spot on this planet is aft rich
in resources as that within the
boundary lines of the United
States. They are practically infin
ite in volume and in variety. The
climate and soil are adapted to the
cultivation of all the oereals and
Units needful for man’s use. Our
1 ikes, rivers and streams abound
in li ill, o ir prairies and plains an
n'ivo w th flanks and beards of
every kind and quality, NVo have

poses.
Our mountains and hills yic
,.vory kind of mineral. We hie
mal un i iron, lead copper, gold
mi l silver; rivers of oil and exhaust
lesi fountains of gas. Without ai
temping to enumerate our rich
possessions, wo may well challengi
the doubter to catalogue what we
bn o not in resources. Our wa
ter power facilities for converting
raw material into finished product,
ure not equaled by any other on
I hit planet.
Wu have or can readily produce
any tiling and every tiling the in
finite wants of man require, whetli
or of utility or ornament. Thi
old worn out and densely popula
ted countries of Europo and Asia
have no such store-houses of wealth
and no such fuciltics for making
them available for the physical
comfort of tlio human family.
Ours is unquestionably the richest
country in the world.
To pretend that the United
States has a rival shows] either a
want of caialor or inexcusable ig
norance. Aro our people inferior
in their physical or intellectual
capacity that they need the protec
tion of Government to save them
from the ruinous competition of
the more productive labor ef other
countries. |
The working people of the Uni
ted Sta‘01 have greater powers of
endurance, are more inventive and
ingenious, more ready to under
stand and apply adventitious aids
in accomplishing resuits, are pos
sessed of more intelligence and
skill and better able to adapt them
solves to the surrounding circum
stances than those engaged in the
sumo industries anywhere in the
world. An American laborer,
whether native or foreign born,
who “pleads ihe baby act’’ and
ask legislative protection from for
eign competition in his pursuits, is
a poor specimen of American man
hood.
The employers of labor, anxious
to appropriate to their own use the
lion’s si Hire of the wealth produced
by toil are the fellows who crowd
the lobbies of Congress clamoring
for a protective tariff. They pro
fess to be actuated and inltiiKuoe
by their desire to secure bett- r
prices to their operatives, when h
fact they rre only intent upoi
making a larger profit for thorn
solves Many workingmen have
been induced to petition for tariff
laws under the impression that
their employers we re influenced by
philanthropic motives; that they
were really anxious to obtain an
advace of wages-

Much is said about tho benefi-
<■ nt operation! of tlie present high
tariff. Have the the toilers en-
oy d this beneficence? In what
p ot-ct .1 industry have wages
been advanced by reaiou of t ie
tariff? Has there not been a gen
eral decline, and tho greatest re
duction in tho industries enjoy .ng
the greatest protection? If labor
is adequately compensated, it is not

unions of working men/
We are well assured that work
ing men arc getting their eyes open
to the actual object and effeet of
tariff laws. They are feeling that it
is a diftgraco to ask protection
from foreign compotion, and that,
in asking for it, they are admitting
their inferiority and incapacity to
earn a living in this land of infin
ite resources without the aid of a
Government “nursing bottle.’
What intelligent, highminded, piv
troitic American laborers want,
and should demand, is unobstruct
ed access to the resources of wealth
and the markets of the world 0| e

surplus for objects of desire with

Little Things thrt Las 1 .
An old lady onco said: —
“When I was a child, iny horn-
was in the country. On ono occa
sion my mother took ino to visit an
aunt, who a had a little girl of my
own uge, ten years. They lived
in a town, and of course there were
many new and attractive sights to
my oountry-aoeustomed eyes. But
the thing which most excited niv
admiration was a pair of shoos, un
like any I had over seen betore,
worn by litllo cousin. They were
of some pretty, light-colored cloth
with patent leatho i tips. I imme
diately wanted a pair just like
them, and my mother, willing to
gratify mo curried me (o the store
to purchaso them, The shopkeep
er had but ono pair, and unfortun
ately, they w ro a size sin dler
than I was used to wear. Howev
er, I pulled them on and declared
they wero quite comfortable, and
despite my mother’s protest, in
sisted upon buying them. Thei 1 '
tightness soon raised a bunion and
I wore them always in agony as
long as they lasted.
“That was fifty years ago, but
those shoes liavs affected the com„
fort of my whole life, for never
from then till now, luivo I put on
a new shoe, or one that was at all
tight or stiff, that that bunion, in
spitojof all treatment, lias not
asserted itself and reinmdeU uu of
my childish vanity.”
Bunions are homely things to
write about, but small things often
serve to a point moral, and so may
tho old lady’s story.
