Tint was a bright, readable ar
ticle in a recent number not very
long ago, signed 'Justine, and pur
porting to be a pictuio of the hon
orable ostato and condition of spin-
sterliood. lint it was rather on)
sided. Inasmuch as my years un -

The life of an O. M,—I uso the
initials, for 1 remember that she
winced under the tictlo—may no;
bo a wholly happy one, but my ox
is, however, the truthful and aeon-
rate title. Spinster, to somo ears
—though not to mine— may sound
better, but it is only by a liconse
of rhetoric that the word is used
now to designate the single woman.
Thera is an equivocation about
it when applied to the middle-aged
unmarried woman of today. In
olden times a woman had to do a
certain amount of spinning before
she coil'd enter the matrimonial
state. Hence, until she was a wife
she was a spinner, or a spinster.
The term may be more correct, le
gally, t hough in the more progres
sive notions thero is uot much spin
ning done either before "or after
marriage.
All women everywhere—and all
men, for that matter, feel a keen
regret nt the signs of udvanoing

withers. The ouk grows old und
finally succumbs to,the forces of
nntiire. The most ,beautiiiil wo

It is no harder for the single
woman to part with the youth than
for the married one, It is no har
der for her to part with the bo-
longings of youth than for lior
wedded sister.
The lady, everywhere, abjures
a showy street toilet, and tlio even-
in ', visiting, or carriage coitumes
of the middle-aged lady today are
sullicietly elegant to atone for
whatever she may resign in the
way of tulle o- pink ribbon. If
,‘Justine” has ever heard Mrs- Dr.
Long bore Potts lectine, she has
observed that even a lady of sixty
may wear rose pink on tlu plat
form.
One may wear anything in those
do ir, sensible days, if it only be
worn ut the right time and place,
and tho thing that is tho most bo-
coming to a womau is tlio tiling
for her to wear, and good sense
and fashion uphold her in so doing.
Every girl has her dreams of
love and marriage, and if tli* lover
does not come on tim'-, or coming
does not fill the requirements, she
may have sorrow and heart-ache.
Probably she will, but if she is wise,
she will not retire, liko Marianna

Remember that we are yet a
long way from the time when ev
erybody shall think and Bay and
do exactly tho right thing.
As for tho inattention of the
world toward the solitary woman,
in my journeying I have found on
ly courtesy ami kindness, The
porter to whom I givo a tip gives
mo as careful attention at though I
had beon the mother of olevcn, and
my follow-travelers never ask me
about it any way,
Neither have I found that the
wiokod and extortionate 1 discrimi
nate between matron und maiden.
I do know that I have heard as
much wholesale condemnation of
icemen, coalmen, milkmen, from
married manhaters as from single
ones. Tho married devotoe of
light-housekeeping “shrinks under
the stern aniii7.e of the lordly
butcher's and baker # ojr«,” just as
woaitly and suroly as she who
wears no wedding ring. Ab for the
(ingle state raising a wa[l of sep
aration between friends it does not
do so any more than do other con
ditions.
If my fiiond is a stenographer, I
know vory well that some ono who
understands tho—to mo—dark art,
can rt times b < of more interest
and servico to her than I. The
physicians often finds his closost
friend outside his profession; it
does not follow that he may not
discuss compound fractures with
some one who has made compound
fractures u study, and no loss of
friendship. On# must not expect
too much in this world below—
espossially of ons's friends.
Concerning homos, 1 once spent
a year in a oerl sin city of educa
tional and literary repute, where
the single woman flourished. She
was there in all scientific, jourulis-
tic, literary, artistic and prohibi
tion glory; ul ways an ornament ti
ller Bex.
In that city were households
composed of from three to half a
dozen ladies; dwelling 'undor one
toof, sitting ut one table, living in
thoroughly good honsekeopipg
fashion, entertaining friends and
strangers, they seemed far from
forlorn.
1 admit th«t the foundation of
true homo is the conjugal and pa
rental relation, but these frequent
ly exist whore the truo home is
not; where it is absent a very fair
approach to home life can bs at
tained. No four walls can hold
the wandering or inconstant na
ture
One great objection to this man
net- of life is, that a household ol
women only grows narrow, one
sided, womanish. This is obviat
ed by the fact that many of these
women lead business lives, and by
contact with the outside world
keep themselves well informed,
and well in touch with the ques
tions of the day; far more so than
does she who lives in a home where
tbe head of the house conies home
and buries himself in the newspa
per all the avoning.
It is not necessary for tho single
woman live in a dreary boarding
hou -e or eat a “solitary roll.” But
even tlio dreary boarding bouse
may bo better than the unhappy
liomo, and tlio solitary uoll oaten in
peace uw' bo more appetizing am!
satisfactory than ortolan and e; nvas
back and contention therewith.
And a# for paying your bills, Jus-
tiue, ttank Goi is you are able to
do so.
Of course it must bo a pleasant
thing to huvo somo one with you
to divide one's joys and sorrows, to
be first in somo one's heart and
life, But as tho records plainly
and painfully show murriugo dors
not of necessity biing about this
felicitous condition. Probably
there is no happiness so perfect as
that of the truly mated man and
woman, But, again, there can be
no loneliness lino that of the wife
whose dreams of companionship is
unrealized. The “dignity” tho
wedding confers is no componsa
tion for it. It is lioart failure of
the saddest and most aggravated
kind.
A married lady said jnot long
ago: -
“I think if I cou’d - have my
youth again, with all the opportu
nities that are open to girls nowa
days, and with a Knowledge of tlio
caro and duties marriag-i brings. I
would uloct to live a siuglo life.
And my life has been a favored
one. I have a good home 4 a good
husband and dear children."
Tho piobubilitics are -that my
diseontented single • sister expects
too muoh much. It is uowliero
written that we shall be wholly
happy here bolow. Happiness
does not come in wngon loads. On
tho contrary it oouins in extremely
small (tortious, and one must bo
wiso to know it when tlioy seo it.
It is not the cup filled to the brim!
it is rather the meager drop on tho
oup’s edgo.
Remember that Nature is ever
compensatory in her workings.
Look around yo.ii dainty room and
no thankful for tho daintiness*
Take it as your portion instead of
companionship and stale cigar
smoko. Be thankful that you,i
pillow is not wot with tears for tlio
wayward daughter or the wayward
son. Resign yourself gratefully to
the fact that tho good God has not
culled you to sew '.on buttons or
manage se.irant girl; bo content
that you are not expected to inuitu
piss “such hs mother used to make.”
Sit down and “count your mer
cies,"
Perhaps the highest happiness
consists in forgetting one’s own
ImppincHS and looking out for that
of others No one need be useless
or loveless. Tho world is the liar-
vest fluid. VVImt ilous -'it matter if
one be first or second, go tho wo k
bo done?
Thero are divorso gifts. All
aro not called to tlio same duties.
The life of the single woman
may bo as fully in nccordaeo with
the divine plan as tho life of her
who is called to wifehood and
motherhood. I know many who
would bo very slow to exchange
wlmt satisfaction ami success they
have won in their singlelmudod
combat with tho world for even
the “genuie married happiness.'’
Appearance are so d ceitful, and
a certainty is so much hotter than
uncertainly.
