Zouaves that the Malakoff was taken.
“ The F.encli had succeeded in sapping
to within thirty-two paces of the xMalakoti
where the Zouaves lay concealed. In
their admirable arrangements for the
attack of the Malakoff, the French counted
on two things for success; first, they had
ascertained that the Russians were in the
habit of relieving the guard oftlie Malakoft
at noon, and that a gteaf part of the old
guard marched out before the new* one
arrived, in order to avoid the loss which
* would arise from crowding the work with
men ; in the second place, it was determin
ed to keep up a most violent vertical fire
until the very moment of the assault tints |
driving the huss;ans into the bomb—proofs, I
and enabling the storming patty to entei !
the work with but little opposition. The j
hour of noon was therefore selected for the !
assault, and the strong columns intended }
for the work were at an early hour assent-1
bled in the advance trenches, all in admi
rable order, and furnished with precise in- j
structinns. The mortars maintained an *
uni emit ting fire until the moment appoint- j
ed. The very instant the last volley wasj
discharged, the storming party of Zouaves i
rushed ov-er the thirty paces befoie them]
and were in the work before the astonished j
Russians knew what had happened. It :
was stated that this party lost but eleven
men iu entering the work. Other troops
advanced rapidly to the support ol the stor- j
ming party, a biidge was formed by rolling |
up five ladders with planks lashed to them.!
a communication was at once commenced
between the advanced trench and the

The Volunteer State.—Yesterday
four companies of volunteers arrived it,
the city from Rutherford county, making
twelve companies which that gallant
county hits furnished for the defense of
the South. I.arge numbers of volunteers
continue to pour into oureity everyday
and are being rapidly mustered into the

It has been but a little over two week'

and equip a provisional army was made
public, and the Governor has not issued
Lis proclamation calling for volunteers, yet
consideialily more than arc required by
the law for active service have already

Tennessee sustain her proud position as
the Volunteer State. I11 a few days we

lo-.v living, disorder ed or unhealthy food, impure

and, above all, by the venereal infection. What
ever be its origin, it is hereditary iu ti e constitu
tion. descending “ from parents to children unto the
third and fourth generation indeed, it seems to
be the rod of Him who says. “ I will visit the
iniquities of tlic fathers upon their children.”
Its effects commence by deposition from the
blood of corrupt or ulcerous matter, which, in the
lungs, liver, and internal organs, is termed tuber
cles ; in the glands, swellings; and on the surface,
eruptions or sores. This foul corruption, which
genders in the blood, depresses the energies of life,
so that scrofulous constitutions not only suffer front
scrofulous complaints, but they have far less power
to withstand the attacks of other diseases; con
sequently, vast numbers perish 1 y disorders which,
although not scrofulous in their nature, are stiil ren
dered fatal by this taint in the system. Most of
the consumption which decimates the human family
has its crig'ii directly .in this scrofulous contamina
tion ; and many destructive diseases of the liver,
kidneys, brain, and, indeed, of all the organs, arise
from or tire aggravated by the same cause.
One quarter of all our people are ■scrofulous;
their persons are invaded by this lurking infection,
and their health i> undermined by it. To cleanse
it from the system we must renovate the blood
by an alterative medicine, and invigorate it by

most active remcdials that have been discovered for
the expurgation of this foul disorder from the lfiood,
and the rescue of the system from its destructive
consequences. Hence it should be employed for
the cure of not only scrofula, but also those other
affections which arise from it, such as Eruptive

The particular purpose and virtue of this Sarsapa

without which sound health is impossible in con
