ATLEE.
Member of the Philadelphia Medical
Society.'
The cash detailed In tno above certificate
came undar.iny observation, and I 'believe
Alderman Duarie’s statementtb bo strictly
correct. Mr. Swaim showed me two other
eases nearly similar, which were cured by
bis Panacea, after every other remedy had
failed. -
Averse as I am to quackery, I hope ever
to be preserved from unjust and tclfith me-

give my Home, in confirmation of the efllca
oy and safety of Mr. Swaim’s medicine.

The following certificate pives the histo.
ry oflhe Introduction of tlie Panacea into
the Pliiladelphia Alms House -Infirmary.
Those who rend it, will be convinced that
the proprietor has nevei fearer the investi
gation of physicians, or endeavoured to ad
minister the medicine in secret. It also
evinces the prejudices of the faculty, those
who were so anxious originally to exclude
the medicine from this institution, would
neglect,qo o'p'portunitj of expelling if,Utter
it had been introduced. <••...> - .
FROM WILLIAM DUANE, Esq.
One of the Aldennci^of_the City ofPhila-
Mr. Swaim, proprietor of a medical com
position called Swaim’s Panacea, applied
to tne, requesting me to state what I know
about the introduction of Ins. medicine in
to the Alms Hoitse—nnd I consider it
duty to comply with his request-. •
Being-President of the Bonrd of Mann
ers ofthe Alms House in the year 1820,
ilr-Swaim expressed to me a wish to Un
dertake the cure of sbme persons then in
the house, whose cases were given up as
incurable by the medical gentlemen, that
lie was confident of curing by his medicine
thoso cases, arid would undertake some of
the most desperate—and wbuld require no
other compensation than tile satisfacton to
bo deri ved from the service rendered.
I promised to consulttheother managers
and did so; b.ut I found that some of the
medical gentlerithU.tn the house,had labour
ed to .prejudice them, as some of them at
tempted to prepossess me against what they
denominated quackery. Some of the man
agers felt inalined to „tho trial, considering
that as they were crises abandohed by the
niedipal men which were to he operated up
on, no harm at lea?; woiild he done, and if
cure was prkcticable, tlie
to be ”
was prkcticable, tlie opportunity qught
i afforded ; hut they expressed a reluc
tance to take any respbrisibility upon themi
by which 1 understood that they did not
like to pqttherilselves.in opposition to, the
physicians. Others opposed it altogether.
I therefore offered rind took upon myself
