AVM. SWAIMi September, 1828; Tlie following certificate gives tlie his tory of the introduction of tlie Panacea into the Philadelphia Alms Houso Infirmary. Those who read it, will be convinced that the proprietor lias never feared tile invest!* gation bf physicians, or endeavored to ad minister the medicine in secret. It also evinces the prejudices of the faculty, that those who Were so anxious originally to exclude the medicine from this institution, would neglect HO opportunity nf expelling it, after it had been introduced. FROM WILLIAM DUANE, Esq. One of the Aldermen of the City oj Phi ladelphia, Mt.Swaim, proprietor of a medical com position called Swaim’s Panacea, applied to me, requesting me to state what I know about the introduction nf his medicine into tlie Alms House—and 1 consider it a duty to comply with his requ -si. Being President nf the Hoard of Mana gert of tho Alms House in the year 1820, Sir. Swaim expressed to mo a wish to un dertake the'cure of .some persons then in the home, whoso cases wore given tip as in curable by fhe.nioiIical gentlemen, that lie was confident of curing, by his medicine those cases, and would undertake some of the most desperate—and would require no other compensation than the satisfaction to be derived from the service rendered. . I promised to consult Urn other mana gers, and did so; but I found that wine nf the medical gentlemen in the house had labored to prejudice them, as some of them attempted to prepossess mo against what they denominated quaokery. Some of the managers felt.'nclined.to the trial, consid ering that as they were cases abandoned by tlie medical men which Were to bo opera ted upon, no harm at least would he aoiie, and if cure Was practicable, the opportuni ty ought to be affordoii, but they expressed a reluctance to take any responsibility upon them; by which I Understood that they did not like to put themselves in opposition to the physicians. Olliers opposed it alto gether. I therefore offered and took upon myself whatever responsibility tlioio was in the case, and notified Mr. Swaim that I would accompany him, and did so. Tlie first case selected was that of a woman, whoso appearance was horrib’e, and whose condition was so deplorable that the pa tients in the same room wished to have her removed, and tho evidence of mjf own sen ses justified their oanfpl.nint. She was a woman of about 30 or 32 years of age, her rigid eye was alrody uestroyod, the left eye piotruded move than half an inch oul of the socket, the flesh of the left cheek was ono complete ulcer, tho flesh of the nose had disappeared and left tlie nostrils two naked holos, tho tlppci lip on the loft side was (Testroyed, and tho teeth and gumi bare, abd the whole face, as it appeared to me, in a State of dissolution; Iter appetite had left her—she represented a Irving skel eton frightful fo.bcliold. Mr.Swaim said he could euro her; ho could not restore tho lost-eye, nor restore the nose, but ho Could restore theleft eye and the mouth. >y He undertook the cuse; and I frequent- ly’attended him ill Ills visits to the poor wo man, nnd sho was cured—and I have fre quently ~ieen her since, going about . her ordinary business with the alacrity usual to a person of that age; the daformitjrof course remained;- but all that Teqiaiiied hesidesappeared healthful.- I, have boo- (itiedrnyself to this case, • upon which I was impossible to be mistaken, nnd for- borno to introduce any other circtlmSfai,* ces than what belong imniediately to it. \V,M. At tlie Eagle Nq 8 Gibbons Range. inarch 17 83 Swaim’s Vermifuge* Patent. THIS valuable AntUdyuA forte and (form Medicine has boen used for these seven years past, and its vilifies are Universally .acknowledged by all who have tried it; to he for superior to any other fobdicino ever employed for most diseases children are subject to. It is porlcclly safe, and no child will refuse to take,it. It seklom foils curing Dysentery, Summer. Complaint, Colic or Cholera Morbus, either in grown persons or children and it gives appetite to almost all debilita ted persons. SVorms frequently infest cliil dren, aggravate their other diseases, and are the chief cause of most fevere, bowel complaint.*, nnd chronic and nervous disens es, incident to childhood, which are so nu merous and frequently fatal. It is much regretted that most vermifuges now in use are injurious, and thousands of children are swept off, or are rendered feeble, pale and enunciated through the first stage of life —which leads on to pulmonary complaints See. See. Sic. Worms being especially apt to infest persons nf debilitated digestive organs and emaciated constitutions, much mischief is often done by the ordinary worm msdi nines, which generally consist of the strong est purgative'*, mercurials, bitters, narco tics, or spiriU of turpentine. Articles of this kirta may destioy worms, but they de bilitate the stomach, and often mate'rially injure the general health. Swaiu's Ver mifuge has tho peculiar advantage of de stroying and removing, warms from tlie bowels without the weakening consequen ces of the stronger purgatives. Ate.—anil it has, moreover, a decided tendency to give vigor botli to the stomach and boweis and organs of digestion—thereby relieving tile general system froin manv troublesome complaints. It is by this means that to many grown persons have been relieved, by Us use, of different complaints—suppo- sing themselves to be in a decline, &c. &c This nwdictne will relieve bowel cone plaints or dysentery, bilious cholic, vomit ing, sickness, pain or Weakness in the sto mach nr bowels, loss of appelite, either in children or grown persons, in a frut hours, nnd it seldom fails curing cuii.ls akd fe ver on fever aoue. No family cught, or ever will be uofhoif if, afltr a trial. Worms are capable of producing great ilistnrbmaes in ttie system. Not only do they aggrnraio ordinary diseases when they nre present, but they also give riso to a- great voriety of very alarming anomalous affections. The whole train nf spasmodic & convulsive diseases may proceed from the irritation of n orms in the alimentary canal Clioleia, epilepsy; catalepsy, tetanus, pa ralysis, mania, convulsion's, as well as a variety nf other nervous and convulsive affections, arc not un'freqnently the imme diate effects of this cause Besides those diseases, worms have also been known produce pleuritic and rheumatic pains, dys entery. remitting fever, dropsy of tlie brain, chronic and spasmodic cough, &c. &c. &c. . Amoiig the symptoms which indicate the presenco of worms, the following are the most common and striking: -A : pale, leaden-Coloured, and occasionally flushed countenance j'a bluish streak under tlie eyes, these nre dull and lioavy, tlie pupils are dilated and much contracted, the low or eyelids and upper lip swell, especially during the night wljile sleeping; great itching in the nostrils, which causes the patient to pick his nose; foul breath; dis turbed sleep; duriu'g which tho patient grinds his teeth, is apt to scream out and startup suddenly as if frightened: tingling in the cars; giddiness; interrupted .speech; palpitation of tlie heart n dry spasmodic cough; irregular and depraved appelite, bcing-sometimes tsntiroly suppressed, and at others exceedingly voracious; abdomen swelled nnd hard; looseness of the bowels: costiveness; unnatural, slimy,or foul stools; pains in the buwels; wasting of the flesh; convulsions; fitsj'-palsy; and finally death.
