FROM WILLIAM DUANE, Esq.
One.of the Aldermen of the Cily nJ Phi-
ladctphiu.
Mr. Swaim, proprietor ofa medical onm
position called Swaim'. Panacea, applied
to me, requesting me to state, uhat I know
about the introduction of ins medicine into
tlio Alms House—and I consider it a duty
to comply with Ins requ st. '
Being President of the Board of Mana
gers of the Alms House in the year 1829,
Mr. Swaim expressed to mo a wish to un
dertake tlie cure of some person, then in
the house, whose c.isos were given Op as in
curable by the medical 'gentlemen,, that Ito
was confident of curing by Ids medicine
those .eases, .and would undertake some of
the must desperate—and would require no
Other’compensation than the satisfaction
to be derived from tlio servico rendered,
I proud,.ed to consult the, other liiana-
gers. ari f did so ; but I found that some of
tlie medical .gentlemen in the house had
labored to prejudice theirf, as some of them
attempted to prepossess mo against- what
they denominated quackery. Some of the
managers felt inclined tit the trial, consid
ering that as they were cases abandoned by
the medical mop which were id bo opera
ted upon, uo Farm at least would be done,
and if cure was practicable, the opportuni
ty.ought to be afforded, but they expressed
a,reluctance to take any responsibility upon
'them; by which I understood tftat they did
not like to put themselves in opposition to
the physicians. Others opposed it altos
getlier. I therefore offered and took ■upon
myself whatever responsibility there wits in
tlio case, and notified Mr. Swaim that I
would accompany him, and did so.. .Tito
first case stlected was that of a woman,
whose appearance was horrib'e, and whose
condition rvjis so deplorable-thut the Ita.
tients in the same rooin wished to have her
remfiVed, ami the evidence of nty own sen
ses jrlstified their oomplaint. Site was a
woman of ubout 39 or SSkyearsbf age, her
right eye was aifedy destroyed,, the left
eye piotrttded more than half all inch out
of the socket, tlie flesh of the left, cheek was
one complete ulcer, tho flesh of the nose
had disappeared'and left the nostrils two
naked holes, the'uppct Up on the left side
was destroyed,' and tho teeth anti gums
bare, and the whole face, as-if appeared to
irie, in a state of dissolution; ..her appetite
bad left her—shc.repfesented a living skel
eton frightful to behold. Mr.Swaim said
he could cure ljcr; Ito could not. restore the-
lost eye, nor restore the nose, but lie could
restore tiielef! eye and the mouth. -;
Ho undertook the case, and I frequent-i
ly attoniied him in'his visits to the poor wo
ntun, and she was cuvqd—and I have fre
quently seen her since, going about Iter
ordinary business with.the alacrity usual
to a person of that o&e; the deformity of,
course remained ; • but all that remained,
besides appeared healthful. I have con
fined myseJfto this^oaser upon which
■fhtl R gives appetite to almost all debilita
ted persons. Worms frequently infest cliil
aggravate .their other diseases, and
are the cliiff cause of'ltnost fevern, bowel
complaints, and chronic mid tiervottyriisenV

merous and frequently fital. It is much
regretted that most vermifuges mi" in use
are injurious and thousands of children arc
swept pfl\ or .are rendered feeble! pale and
enunciated through the first .stage of lifts
—which leads on to pulmonary complaints
&c. tkc; Sic.
Wor.us Irelng especifrily apt to infest
persons nl debilitated di gestive organs aitd
emaciated constitutions, much mischief is
often done by -tho uroiirtry worm ni?di-
elnes, which generally consist of the strong*
est purgatives, mercmuls, bitters, narco
tics, or spirits of turpentine. Articles of
this kind limy destroy worms, but they de
bilitate the stomach, and often niati»hilly
injure the general.li^allli* SwaimS Vkr-

stroying .and removing worms' from the

it lias, mflr«*over, a decided tendency to
give vigor both to-the stomach mid bowels

the gcneml system from manv troublesome
complaints. Il 4 is hy. this means that so
many grown ppreons^ have'been relieved,

^AVorms are capable of producing gfoat
disturb inaes in tno system. Not only do
they aggravate ordinary diseases whei»$|tey
are present, but they also give rise to a
gre t variety of very alarming anomalous
affections. Tho whole train of spasmodic &
conVufsive diseases may proceed from the
irritation of worms in the alimentary canal:
Cholera, epilepsy, catalepsy, teftimts, pa
ralysis, mania, convulsions, as well as a
variety of other nervous and convulsive
affections, are not unfrequentlv the imme
diate effect a of this cause Besides these
diseases, worms have also been known lo
produce pleuritic and rheumatic pains,dys
entery. remitting fever.dropsy of the brain,
chronic and spasmodic cough, &c. &c.
&c. ..
Among the symptoms which indicate
tho presence of worms, the following hie
the most common and striking:—A pale,
leaden-coloured, and occasionally flushed
countenance; a. bluish stfSak under the
cyos, these arc dull and heavy, the pupils
arc dilated and much contracted, the low
er eyelids and upper lip swell, especially,
during the night while sleeping; great
itching in tho nostrils, which causes the
patient to pick his nose; foul breath; dis
turbed sleep; during which the patient
grinds his teeth, is apt to scream out and
Mart up suddenly as if frightened; tingling
in tlie cars; giddiness; interrupted speech;
palpitation of the heart h dry spasmodic
cough; irregular and depraved appetite,
being sometimes entirely suppressed, and
nt others exceedingly voracious; abdomon
swelled and hard; looseness bf the bowels;'
