I promised to consult the other maun
gers, aurl did so; but I found that some of
the medical gentlemen iu the house liar!
labored to prejudice iliefn, as some of the.;
attempted to prepossess mo against what
they donoininalcd quackery. Some of th
managers felt inclined to the trial, consid
ering, that as they were cases abandoned In
the medical men which worn to be opera
ted upon, no harm at* least would bo dono,
and if cure waf practicable, the opportuni
ty ought to be iilVorded, bin they expressed
a rcluctaiicc to take any responsibility upon
them i by which I understood lh.il they did
nut like to put themselves in opposition to
the pliyjh ians, . Others opposed- it alto
gether. I therefore offered, and took upon
myself whatever responsibility there was iu
the case, ■ and notified Mr. Swnim that 1
would accompany him,, and did so. Tlie
first case selected was that of a woman
wlidse appearance was horrib'e. and whose
condition, was so deplorable that tlie pa
tients iu tlio same’rooin wished to have her
removed, and the ovidouco of my own sen
ses justified tlioir ooniploint. -She was a
woman of about 30 or 82 years of age, her
right eye was alredy uestroyed, the left
eye piotrnded more than half an inch out
inf the socket, the fiesli ofthe left cheek was
one complete uloer, the flesh of the nose
luul disappeared and left the nostrils two
naked holes, the uppei lip on tlio left side
was destroyed, end the teeth and gums
haro, aiid tl)0 whole face, as it appeared to
ine, in a stale of dissolution; her appetite
had left her—she represented a living skel
eton frightful to behold. Mr.Swnim said
he could cure her; he could not restore the
lost .eye, noi- restore the nose, but lie could
restore .thcloft aye and the month, a-
He undertook tlie case, and i frequent

are injurious, and thousands of children are
swept off, or are rendered feeble, pale and
eiu.inciated through the .first stngo of life
—which leads on to pulmonary complaints
4io. &c. &c.
Worms being especially apt to infest
persons ol debilitated digestive prgans and
emaciated constitutions, much mischief is
often dune by Hie ordinary worm medi
cines, which generally consist of the strong
est purgativos, mercurials, bitters, narco
tics, nr spirits of turpentine. Articles of
this kind may destroy Worms, hut they de

Worms aro capable of producing great
lislurbinees in tlio system. Not only do
they aggravate ordinary diseases when they
aro present, but they also give" rise to a
groat variety of very alarming anomalous
affections. Tho whole train of spasmodic A
convulsive diseases may proceed from tlie
irritation of worms in the alimentary canal.
Cholera, epilepsy, catalepsy, tetanus, pa
