My Panacea requires no encomium; its

September, 1828.
The following certificate gives the his
tory of the introduction of tlie Panacea into
tho Philadelphia Aims House Infirmary.
Those who road it, will lie convinced tlint
tin- proprietor has never feared tne investiV
gation of physicians, or endeavored to ad
minister the medicine in secret. - It also
evinces the prejudices of the faculty, that
tlioso who were so anxious originally to
exclude the medicine from tills institution,
would neglect no opportunity of expelling
it, after it had been introduced.
FROM WILLIAM DUANE. Esq.
One of the Aldermen o f the City oj Phi
ladelphia.
Mr. Sivalm, proprietor of a.medicnl com
position called Swaim's Piinar.ea, applied
to me, requesting me to state what I know
about the introduction of Ills medicine into
tlie AlmsHome—and I consider it a duty,
to comply with his requ st.
lining President of the Ilnnrd of Maria
tors of the Alms House. In the year HI28',
Ur. Sivaim expressed to me a ivjsh to un
dertake the cure of some persons then in
tlie house, whose cases were given np as in
curable by tile medical ccntlemcn, tIVrit he
was confident of curing by his medicine
those cases, and would Undertake some of
tlie most desperate—anil would require no
other compensation than the Satisfaction
to be derived from tho servico rendered.
I promised to consult the otliei mana
gers, and did so; but I found tlint seine of
the medical gentle, non in tlie bouse had
labored to prejudice them; as some of them
attempted to pr'eposBC3s me against what
they'denomiuatod quackery. Some of the
managers felt inclined to tlie trial, consid
ering that ns they werefldses abandoned by
tlie medical men which were to he opera
ted upon, oo harm at least would be done,
and if cure was practicable, the opportuni
ty ought to he afforded, but they expressed
a reluctance to take nny responsibility upon
them’; by'whioh I understood that they did
not like to put themselves in opposition to
tho physicians. Others opposed ‘it alto
gether. I therefore offered aittl took upon
Thyself whatever responsibility there was in
the case, nnd notified Mr. Sivaint that'I
would accompany him, and did so. Tlie
first case selected was tlint of n woman,
whose appearance was horrih’e, and whose
condition was so deplorabio that -tlie pa
tients in tlie same room wished to have her
removed, and the evidence of riiy own sen
ses justified their complaint. She was i
woman of aboitt 30. or 32 years of age, her
right eye,was alredy uestroyed, the left
eye piotrmled more than half an inch out
of the socket, tlie flesh of tlie left check was
one complete ulcer, tho flesh of tlie nose
lin'd disappeared and left file nostrils two
naked holes, tho uppei lip on tile left side
was destroyed, and the teeth and gums
hard, am) the'whole face, as it appeared to
me, in a state of dissolution; her appetite
had left her—she represented a living skel
eton frightful to behold. Mr.Sivaim said
he could cure her; tie could not restore the
lost eye, nor restore the nose, blit lie could
restore theleft eye and the mouth.
He undertook the case, and I frequent
ly attended him in' his visits to the poor wo
man, and sho was cured—and I have fre
quently seen Iter since, going .about her
ordinary business with tho. alacrity usual
to a person of that age; tho deformity of
course remained ; hut all that remained
besides nppoared healthful. I have con
fined myself to this case, upon which I

THIS valuable Antl-dysen-
terii tmd /torm Medicine has
bcerr used for tlieso seven
years past, and Its virtues are
universally acknowledged by
all who have tried it, to bo fa'r superior lo
any other medicine ever employed for
most diseases children are subject to. It is
perfectly safe, and no child will refnso to
take it. It sehlohi fails ‘curing Dysentery,
Summer Complaint,- Colic or'Cltolcta
Morbus, cither in grown persons or children
and it gives appetite to almost all debilita
ted; persons. Worms frequently infest cliil
dfen,' uggravuto their other diseases, and
ure the chief cause of (host fevers, bowel
n Joints, nnd chronic and nervous discus
anideiit to childhood, which are so nu
merous and frequently fatal; It is much
regretted t|tut most vermifuges now in use
ure injurious, and thousnodsofchildren art
swept of]', or are rendered feeble, pale and
eimiiiciutcd through the first stage of life
—which leads oft to pulm&nary complaints
&c. &c. &c.
Worms being especially apt to infest
persons of debilitated digestive organs mid
emaciated constitutions, much mischief is
bl'te'n tlnne.^by the ordinary worm medi
cines, which generally consist of the strong
est purgatives, mercurials, hitters, narco
tics, or Spirits’of turpentine. Articles of
this kind may desttoy worms, but they de
bilitate.the stomach, nnd often materially
injure tho general health. Swaim’s Vf.ii-
surtJOE has tho peculiar advantage of de
stroying arid removing worms from the
bowels without tlie weakening consequen
ces of tlie stronger purgatives. &c.—arid
it has, moreover,, a decided tendency to
give vigor botli to tlie stomach ami bowels
and organs of digestion—thereby relieving
tlie general system from mauv troublesome
complaints. It-is by this means that ;o
many grown persons liave been reliored,*
by its use, of different complaints—suppo-
sititr themselves to he in a decline, &o. &c
i'ftis -medicine will relieve bowel com

Histiirh myes in tiie system. Not only tin
tliev aggravate ordinary .incases when they
are present, hnt they also give rise to-a
great variety of very alarming anomalous
affections. The whole train of spasmodic A
convulsive diseases may proceed from the
irritation of worms in the alimentary canal.
C-iioiera, epiiepiy, cafalepsy, teiaflns, pa
ralysis, mania, convulsions, as well as a
variety Of other nervous nnd convulsive
affections, are not unfrcquently the imme

diseases, worms have also been kriuivu to
produce pleuritic nnd rheumatic pains,dys
entery, remitting fever, dropsy of the hjra'in,
chronic mid spasmodic cough, &c. &c.
&c.
Among the symptoms which indicate
tlie preseneb of worms, tlie following are
Ihe most common and striking:—A pale,
leaden-coloured, and occasionally flushed
countenance; a bluish streak under the
eyes, these are dull and heavy, the pupils
are dilated and much contracted, the low
er eyelids nnd upper lip swell, especially
during tlie night while sleeping; grent
itching in .tlie nostrils, which causes the
patient to pick his hose; foul breath; dis
turbed sleep; during which the putient
grinds his teeth, is apt to scream out nnd
startup suddenly as if frightened: tingling
in ihe cars; giddiness; interrupted speed,;
palpitation of the heart a dry spasmodic
cough; irregular and depraved appetite,
being sometimes entirely suppressed, and
at others exceedingly voracious; afdoriien
swelled and hard; looseness of the bowels;
costiveness; unnatural, slimy,or foul stonls;
pains in tlie bowels; wasting of tho flesh;
convulsions; fits; palsy; ami finally death.
