My Panacen requires no encomium; its
astonishing effects and wonderful operation
have drawn, both from Pntienls and Medi
cal Practitioners of the highest respeqtahi
lity, the most unqualified approbation, and
established for it a character which Envy's
pen, though dipped in gall, can never tarn
ish.
The false reports concerning this valu
able medicine, which have been so diligently
circulated by certain Physicians,have their
origin either in E.NVY, or in the mischiev

TIONS..
The Proprietor pledges himself to the
Public, and gives them the most solemn
assurances, that this medicine contains
neither mercury nor any other deleterious
drug.
The public are cautioned not to purchase

WM. SWAIM.
Soptomber, 1828.
The following certificate gives the his
tory of the introduction of the Panacea into
the Philadelphia Alms House Infirmary.
Those who read it, will be convinced that
the proprietor has never feared the investi*
gallon or physicians, or endeavored to ad
minister the medicine in secret. It also
evinces the prejudices of the faculty, tfcil
those who were so anxious originally to
exclude the medicine,from this institution,
would neglect no opportunity of expelling
it, after it had been introduced.
FROM WILLIAM DUANE, Esq.
Onto/ the Aldermen ef tjie City a) Phi
ladelphia.
Mr. Swnim, proprietor ofa medical com
position called Swaim’s Panacea, applied
to me, requesting me to state what I know
about the introduction of his modinine into
theAlms House—and 1 consider it a duty
to comply with his requ It.
Being President of the Bnnrd of Mans
ortof theAlms House in the year IU20,
lr. Swaim expressed to me a wish to un
dertake the cure of sume persons then in
the house, whose cases were given Up as in
curable by the medical L’entlemen, that he
was confident of curing bv his medicine
those cases, and would undertake some of
the most desperate—and would require .no
other compensation than the satisfaction
to be derived from tho service rendered.
I promised to consult the other mana
gers, and did so; hut I found that some of
the medical gentlomen in tile house hail
labored to prejudice them, as-somopf them
attempted to prepossess me ngainst what
they denominated quackery- Some of the
managers felt inclined to the trial, consid
ering that as they were cases abandoned by
the medical men which were to be opera
ted upon, no harm at least would be done,
and if cure was practicable, the opportuni
ty ought to be afforded, buMhey expressed
a reluctance to take any responsibility upon
them; by which I understood that they did
not like to put themselves in opposition to
the physicians. Others opposed it alto
gether. I therefore offered and took upon
myself whatever responsibility there was in
the case, and notified Mr. Swaim that I
would accompany him, and did so. The
first case stlcdted was that of a woman,
whoso appearance was horrible, and whose
condition was so deplorable that the pa
tients in tbo same room wished to have her
removed, and tho evidence of my own sen
ses justified their oomplaint. She rvns n
woman of about 30 or 32 years of age, her
right eye was alredy uestroyed, the left
eye protruded more titan half an Inch out
of the socket, the flesh of the left cheek was
nne complete ulcer, tire flesh of ti)e nose
had disappeared and left the nostrils two
naked holes, the uppei lip on the loft side
was destroyed, and the teeth and gums
bare, ami the whole face, us it appeared to
me, in'a state of dissolution;-her appetite
had left her—silo represented a living skel
eton frightful to behold. Mr.Swaim said
he could cure her; he could not restore the
lost eye, nor restore the nose, but he could
restore theleft eye and the mouth.
fie undertook the case, and I frequent
ly attended him in his visits to tile poor wo
man, and site was cured—and I havo fre
quently seen her since, going about her
ordinary business with the alacrity usuart
lo a person of that ago; the deformity of
course, remained ; but all that remained
besides appeared Healthful. I have con
fined myself to tin*, ease, upon which 1

THIS valuable Anti-dyscti-
teric and /Form Medicine has
been used for- these seven
years past, and its virtues are
universally acknowledged by
all who have tried It, to he far superior to
any other medicine ever employed for
most diseases children nre subject to. It is
perlectly safe, anil no child will refuse to
take It. It sehlom fails curing Dysentery,
Summer Complaint, Colic or Cholera
Morbus, either in grown persons or children
and It gives appetite to almost all debtlita
ted persons. Worms frequently infest
dren, aggravate their other diseases, and
are the chief cause of most ftven, bowel
complaints, nnd chronic and nervous diseas
es, incident to childhood, which arc so nu
merous and frequently fatal. It is muOh
regretted that most vermifuges now in use
are Injurious, and thousands of children are
swept off, or are rendered feeble, pale and
enunciated through the first stage of life
—which leads on to pulmonary complaints
&c. &c. Sic.
Worms being especially apt to infest
persons of debilitated digestive organs and
emaciated constitutions, much mischief is
often done by the ordinary worm medi-
eines, which generally consist of the strong
est purgatives, mercurials, bitters, narcu-
tics, or spirits of turpentine. Articles of
this kind may destroy worms, but they de
bilitate the stomach, and often materially
injure the goneral health. Swaim’s Vkk-
MirooE has the peculiar advantage of de
stroying and removing worms from the
bowels without the weakening consequen
ces of the stronger purgatives. Sic.—and
it has. moreover, a decided tendency to
give vigor botli to the stomach and bo'weis
nnd organs of digestion—thereby relieving
the general system from manv troublesome
complaints. It is by ibis means that so
many grown per*ons have been relieved,
ft its use, of different complaints—stippn-
iiig themselves lobe in a decline, Sic. Sic
This medicine will relieve bowel com
plaints or dysentery, bilious cholic, vomit
ing, sickness, pain or weakness in the sto
mach or bowels, loss of appetite, cither in
children or grown persons, in a few hours;
and it seldom fails curing ciiiLts and fe
ver on fever ague. No family ought,
or ever will be without it, after a trial.
Worms are capable of producing great
dlsturbsnees in the system. Not only do
they aggravate ordinary diseases when they
are present, but they also give rise to a
great variety of very alarming anomalous
affections. Tho whole train ofspasmodic Si
convulsive diseasos may proceed from the
irritation of worms in the alimentary canal.
Cholera, epilepsy, catalepsy, tetanus, pa
ralysis, mania, convulsions, as well as a
variety of other nervous and convulsive
affections, are not unfscquently the imme.
diate effects of this cause Besides these
diseases, worms have also-been known lo
produce pleuritic nnd rheumatic pains,tlvs-
entery, remitting fover, dropsy of the hrain,
chronic and spasmodic cough, Sic. Sic.
Sic.
Among the symptoms which indicate
the presence of worms, the following are
the most common and striking:—A pale,
leaden-coloured, and occasionally flushed
countenajice; a bluish streak under the
eyes, these are dull and heavy, the pupils
are dilated and much contracted, the low
er eyelids and upper lip swell, especially
during the night while sleeping; great
itching in the nostrils, which causes the
patient to pick Ms nose; foul breath; dis
turbed sleep; during which the patient
grinds his teeth, is apt to scream out and
startup suddenly as if frightened: tingling
in tlie cars; giddiness; interrupted speech;
palpitation of the heart a dry spasmodic
cough; irregular and depraved appetite,
being sometimes entirely suppressed, a,nd
at others exceedingly voracious; abdomen
swelled and hard; looseness of the bowels;
costiveffes'si unnatural, slibiy,or foul stools;
pains in the bowels; wasting of the flesh;
convulsions; fits; palsy; and finally death.
