September, 18(8.
The following ceitificate gives the his
tory of the introduction of the Panacea into
the Philadelphia Alms House Infirmary.
Those who read it, will be convinced stint
site proprietor has never feared the inresti*
gaiion of physicians, or endeavored to ad
minister the medicine in secret. It also
evinces the prejudices of the facility, that
Ihoso who were so anxious originally to
exclude the medicine from this institution,
would neglect no opportunity of expelling
ft, after it had been introduced.
FROM WILLIAM DUANE, Esq.
One nf Ok Aldermen of the City oj Phi-
•ladetphia.
Mr. Swaim, proprietor of a ritedical com
position called Swahn’s Panacea, applied
tome, requesting me to state what I know
about the introduction nf his medicine into
the Alms llonse—and I consider it a duty
to comply with his requ si. '
Being President of the Board' nf Mann
>ers of the’ Alins- Ifnnse in the year (8(9,
Mr. Swaim expressed tome a svisli to un
dertake the cure of sortie persons then in
the house, whosesfltses were given upas in
curable hv tlie medical cntleinen, that he
was confident of curing by his medicine
those cases, and would undertake some of
the most desperate—and would'-require no
other compensation than the satisfaction
to be derived from the service rendered.
. I premised to consult the othei mana
gers, and did so ; but 1 found that some of
the medical gentlemen in the house had
labored to prejudice them’, as some nf them
attempted to prepossess me against what
they denominated quackery. Home oftlie
niaiiageis felt inclined to Up: trial,, consid
ering that aslliev were cares abandoned by
the medical men which weT* to lie opera
t- il upon, iio harm at least would he done,
and if cure was practicable, Hie opportuni
ty ought to lie afforded, but they expressed
a reluctance totake any responsibility upon
them; by which I understood that they did
not like to put tirem-clyes in opposition to
tho physicians. Olliers opposed, it alto-
getlicr. I iberefure offered and took upon
myself whatever responsibility there wns in
the case, and noflfied Mr. Swaim that I
would accompany him, and did so. The
first case selected was that of a woman
whose appearance was linrrib'e, and whose
condition was so deplorablo that the pa
tients in tipi’same room wished to have liet
