tbefe But I su«pcctthe truth to be, that, if the
<h«eascTie infcctiouf. it if in it* incipient stage,
nod perhaps even before its presence is suspec
ted by him who Communicates'it For it teems
less likely, that one in a state of collapse, when
thereat and healthy moisture of the body ap-
p«arto undergo a retrQcesilon from the aorfhce,
‘should gire out infection as one whose animal
iftnctVona aw ail in exercise. If tile conjecture
Wight, the attendant on the sick doss not run nor
« greater, if aa grtabarisk as ipany do fa the
streets. It would likewise explain much of the
mystery attending the Increase oflbe disease.
tVhaterer anomalies appear, the weight of
evidence is eertalhly in fovpr of thlslllsense be-,
tag propagated by infection. The fact that the
brig durieis, from Uubhn. arrived below
Quebec on the 3d June, having had the disease
on boardjdaring her passage out*«Tbat from,
the comnnfifeation of the IJealth Qaikihissioner
it doss ijot appear that the public authorities of
that v pUw apprehended danger, and conse
<juedttr»were unlikely to enforce a very rigid
'Quarantine, and that five days after the arrieaf
.oftho Brig, the disease broke out iu that City,
. and for the first time on this Contiucnt, puts
doubt on the suhjecWitlmost to an end.
Ouo of two things is certain, either Jhsttbe
disease wras brought to this Continent by the
Emigrants at Quebec, or that the nir supposed
deleterious, reached thot place at the very time
of their^trrival—a coincidence almost ojirueq
lous.
The advance of this disease has beet stealthy
nnd la almost every instance, where it has far
the first time reared its grisly head to destroy
some kuowu drunkard, any other than the true
has been assigned for the cause of death. Like
fire nltich first attacks the most combustible,
mod then with accumulated force the less, 'till
nil is brought ond**?/ubduins isSuencs.'tkis
disease begins with Che drunkard and ends with
the temperate. • ^ •
While the utmost caution is therefore sug
gested, the inference follows thub concurring
circumstances#of situation, constitution and
iwbitt, if this do not'destroy, may nbete some
thing, or add to the virulence of this disease.
It U certain, that the policy to be pursued
by individuals and communities, will be predica

character, a

Independent of all considerations con

for their prevention.
The facts which have »!#.'».tv bees ce!
