Fion: Dr. Chilton, the eminent Chemist of New
York, in proof of tho accomplishment of this
discovery. ^
Dr. John B. McMunu having made known
to me the process by which he prepares his
"Elixir of Opium,” and wishing mo to state my
opinion concerning it. I therefore say, that the
process is in accordance with well known
Chemical laws, and that the preparation must
contain nil the valuable principles of Opium,
without those which are considered as deleter!
ous and useless.

Dr. J.B. McMunn,—Dear Sir—I Inve made
repeated trials of your ‘Elisir of Opium’ in
the City and Marine Hospitals, and find it lo
possess tho anodyne aud sedative powers of the
ordinary preparations of Opium, without pro
ducing. tha excitmcnt, headische, nausea, and
constipation, which in many cases render those
prepratinns objectionable. Its effects are more
permanent than those of Morphia. Yours, Ac.

Those who take Opium and its ordinary pm
parations, cannot be ignorant of tho fact that its
distressing nnd pernicious effects result from the
operation ofite deleterious principles, ,and that
the tremors languor and lassitude with which its
devotoes nro ufilicterf, and for which they repeat
the dose to relieve, aro sensations of its owner ea.
lien.
But in consequence of the exclusion of those
deleterious principles from the Elixir ofOpitim
it i* mu liahlQ to dnrntigo the functions of the
systom, nor injure tho constitution and general
henltlr.hence its high superiority in all those cases,
in which the lung continued and liberal use
of Opiates are indicated nnd noeeasary to allay
pain A spasmodic action, A induce sleep & coni'
posurc. as in cases of fractures, burns or scuhis,
cancerous ulcers, aud other painful affections.
Aud toihoso persons.whofm necessity or vittu*
ted in Julgi'nctj have been accustomed to the
use of Opium, this preparation will afford a
gratifying substitute by which they may relieve
themselves fin the thraldom of pernicious A too
frequently inveterate habit.

Fever nnd Ague. Double the strength
ef any other of the Tor.ic Mixtures.
Intermittent Fever, or as it is more popular
ly called, Fover nnd Ague, or Chills ond Fo
ver*, is a fever composed of sovoral distinct
paroxysms, with a perfect intermission, or ne*
riod when no fover is present, interposed be
tween each. Each paroxysm h«H three stages,
which successively follow each other with com
sidernblo regularity, namely, a cold singe* a hot
singe, and finally, a sweating stage, which ter
minates the pnroxysm.
Previously to an attack, n feeling of languor
nnd debility i* experienced, with sluggishness
in motion and some uneasiness in attempting to
move. The face and extremities become pule;
iho nails of a leaden or livid color, the features
shrunk, nnd the skin appear* as if contracted by
cold: n fooling of c iduuss conics on Iho back,
resembling often a stream ofcold water running
down it, nnd soon extend* over the wbolo body,
(though nt thin timo Die skin of the patient will
fool warm to another poison) tho sensation of
coldness soon increases to a tremor, and this to
rigours nnd shivering.
The above symptoms, winch nre thoso of Iho
cold stngo, vary indifferent individuals, being
very slight in some; in others, vory severe.—
Tljqy uie generally more severe in tho old and
debilitated, than in Die young nnd strong, nnd
last from n few minutes to many hours. After
a time, differing in almost every case, the chill*
ness seems to ahnto.or to alternate with slight
flushes of heat—these soon givo place to contiu*
uod nnd increased heat of the skin: thou follows
all the symptoms of fover. After an uncertain
ported the symptoms abate, n sweat now grad'
uttlly brenksout, nnd soon become* profuse—
when using the mixture, all painful symptoms
disappear, ilio skin becomes cool and tho pntiont
gradually better until tho pnroxysm passes en
tirely off. All fever* marked by u distinct chill,
followed by fever nnd sweating, nnd termina
ting in a more or less perfect remission of all the
symptoms, the ague occurring at tolerably regi
nlnr intervals, are included in the class of inter
mittent*.
As Ague and Fever generally 'originate in
places contiguous to marshy and inundated
ground, cure should bo taken not t» bo exposed
more than necessary, either to tho heat of tho
«n»», or in Die open air after sun down.
