CURIOUS AND IMPORTANT REVELATIONS It I
New York, March 1.
The New York Herald and Tiniea.of this morn*
tag, contain a aynopalaol ihc correspondence which
led to tbo famous Oatcnd Conforoneo. The sub-
stance of it Is, that Mr. Socreiary Marcy wrote lo
Mr. Buchanan, Mr. Mason, and Mr. Soulo, setting
forth tho advantages to tho United States of tho
acquisition of Cuba, llo alio slated nt length tho
reasons which lod him to believo (hat Spain was
under strung and poculiar obligations to Franco
and England. In his letter to Mr. Soule, ho used
very strong language, and instructed him to de
mand #300,000 as indemnity lor the Black War
rior affair. Ho waa also inairucicd to require pay
ment immediately, and intimatod that tho African-
ixaiion of Cuba would never be allowed by tho
United Slates.
In conclusion, Mr. Marcy requested our Minis
ter* to Great Britain, France and Spain, to moot
at somo convenient point, to consider tho subject.
Tho Ministers mot at Oatcnd, and resolved that tho
acquisition of Cuba by purchase or conquoe., was
necessary. Mr. Marcy, it seems, was not willing
to go beyond an offer to purchase; wheroupon Mr.
Soule resigned, fooling that ho had boon troated
with indignity.
The correspondence, of which tho abovo la only
a synopsis, is very voluminous. Tho matter has
created a profound excitement in political and
commercial circles, both hero and at Washington.
