Tho alarm of fire last evening was occasioned
by the burning of a small frame building on West
Broad street, near the Railroad depot, ocuupiod as
a bar-room and grocery, by Win. Uodgos. Tho
house, Iwhicb belonged to Mrs- Clair, together
with the; entire stock, was entirely destroyed.
Mr. Ilodgoa was insured for $1,000, in tho Savan

did arrive at Wilmington, (N. C.) on (bo schooner
Lucy Sharpe, and that he was oxpected in Balti

sition that iho Janies Cheston had been the scene
of a mutinous tragedy, but by no means removes

miles south from Beirut, und contains a population
of about ten thousand pbrsons. In the winter ol
1853-4, some Mussolinon who wero digging for

covered throo copper pots, each containing eight
hundred pieces of gold. Tho whole valuo of
the troasuro was aboutf 12,000. After this discovery
excavations woro commenced upon a larger scale

On the lid, below the ligtiro-hoad, is the inscrip
tion, consisting of twenty-two long lines, closely
written. Tho letters are in porlect preservation,
and can ho read with tho utmoal ease and accura
cy, and the ivholo forms by far tho longest and
moat perfect inscription yet discovered in this
most ancient language and character., it appears
to bo mainly a genealogical history of tho person
hurid in the sarcophagus, who, it appears, wan a
King of 8idoii. Tho names ol Baal ami Aslitor-
odi, die woll-knowu Gods of tho Sidon inns, occur
repeatedly iii ilioao inscriptions. Some of die
words aro Hebrew, as melelc, king; while tho
forms of some letters are so much like lliosu ol die
ancient Greek as at unco to indicate the relation
ship. Letters wero in run led by the I'hmnleinns.—

the Aral casting. 1 have a copy of thu inscription
before me, with iho hguru-hcad, taken with great
