that point. The overseer at that aialion, aaya, the

been committed to jail to await legal proceeding®
in the prenuaea.
One of the parties is said to be dot more than
eighteen year® old. Both of them will have an
examination thia morning before Justice Connell.
The Nntionnl American Platform.
W® would invite particular attention to th** of-
ficial platlorm adopted by tho National American
Council recently assembled at Philadelphia. It ia
a paper of eminent ability, reminding one, by it®
bold position®, itf patriotic sentiment®, and it®
terseness of expression, of tho celebrated British
Magna Charts and :he Amerloao Declaration of
Independence-
It will be observed, that there was no difference
of opinion whatever, upon any portion of the plat
form, except tho twelfth section, and in relation to
the tenure of office by American Catholics. Upon
this latter point we cuild hnvo wished for greater
liberality. Upon the subject of slavery, no party
in the Union occupies a more sound and national
position: It is just to the ?«uih and just to the
North, und true to the Constitution. Tho action
of the convention can not latl to produce a pro
found impression up-m the whole country.
It remains to be teen whether tho Anti-Amuii-
can press in Georgia will submit it to the eiarni-
nation of their readers.

tho "bombshell*” of two leading whig* of Geor

Virginia, that the introduction of the great Fourth

fit to be *p»t upon—to bring into their rank* tho
unwary and confiding .If the Johnson party really
wanted tn unite all tho people of Georgia', if they
really intended such a union, and C»v. Johnson
declares that "lor the purposo of cffccMng this ob

they passed the following resolution :

the present Federal and State Administrations would
unite upon me. Boon, however, II appeared that many
of them who had previously bren my Arm, undavlatlng

any man without Ua pals. This statement was repeat
edly made to me, and 1 waa urged by persons wlm
wore, and by others who wero not, member*, to
join thia uew o’gaulu'lotti which, alter sett*
'•us consideration, and with the most thor
ough conviction of duty, I positively declined to do.—
You wilt remember, that after having beeu repeatedly
and urguntly pressed upon tho consideration of l!m
public through tbe newspaper*, lu connection with tho
office of Uoviruor, my name wia suddenly dropt. I
advert to lb* root only to aay that this followed limuo
dlatoly upon my refuul to Join the new political con nee*
lion referred to. I do not cumplalu of the course pur-

to agree with them, I believe their motives are patriotic
and cheerfully m.needs that they wer® as free to with,
hold their suffrages tmm me, aa I waa to decline party
association with them.
Here I waa willing to let the matter rest, feeling
neither chagrin nor regret that tho publlo ey® hid been
averted from me. BUIt, however, those of my person
al friends, who, tike myieir, were content with tho
Union organisation, formed upon what la called tho
Georgia platform, continued to urge me forward—some
(of whom you are one) saagestlng my announcement
without nomination, and others calling fbr a convention
of the Union party. This haa Induced a review ofth®
wholo ground, that! might reach • conclusion at onco
consistent with my duty a* a cttlten, and just to mj-

preparing or an active political contest, and that thero
are, at present, but two organised parties In the State,
via.1 the Democratic, and tho Know Nothing or Amor.
Icau, units* the Temperance Association tusy be called

conceded that those who etc not wlthtu either of ttteso
organisations, are too few lu number for effective, In-
dependent action- I have concluded, therefore, that
being neither a Democrat, nor* Know Nothing, there
it no place for me tu this contest. There can he no
plainer proposition than that he, who lu limes of high
party excitement, fluds himself without a party, is not
only freed from ail obligations of duty to present film
self a* a candidate for popular suffrage, but Is forbid*

ed not to it o 1 greatly pro ter the ancient usage id the
KepuhliC, that of selecting candidates whose tnerlunro
known to the people, and then leaving the people, on
comparison of those mcrl's, to chocne between them.
1 answer you, therefore, my dear air, that, under exist
ing circumstances, l decline being a candidate, and sin
cerely trust I shall hear no more mi the subject.
To your second Inquiry, what tbafl he dune by thn»c

proper course Is, to adopt the recommendation of the
meeting recently held tn Temp,-ranee Hall, Columbus.
