Those wrongs, that had bqen accumulating for
years with the strength "I tho pr**M nt democratic
party, had reached a point beyond the palo of en
durance ; nnd the Union party of Georgia, a parly
that has ever borne tho inscription of "Conserva
tive and Relorm" npon its standard, resolved to
enter the field for true American principles, and io
lend their aid to the eradication of a great and
dangerous evil. Nor were they alone in this pa
triotic work. Many true und noblo-heartcd dem
ocrats, fired with American pride, and disgusted
with tho low and unmanly truckling of their party
lo tins foreign influence, joined their fortune* with
ours, and resolved io battlo in the came.
Another consideration that commended tho
American party, with peculiar force, to the truo
men ol the South, was ihc high position it had ta
ken at the North upon the question ot slavery agi
tation, having resolved UisotUf ir tacus as flint
against any larlhcr disturbance ol the question, and
to discountenance every man who sought to use it
in tho future elections. They resolved also to
smnd by and muintu n the constitution, and to
avoid the discussion of uil subject* that weru cal
culated to ciid.ingtr or subvert tlio Union. W hat
was to be (.one ? The wing party hud gone by
tho board ; the democratic puny had not only
proved faithless lo I hull principles, hut had lent,
through their President, Mr. Pierce, tho entire uid
ol tho govurnmcni to build up and strengthen tho
enemies ol those principles. Wu read the consu-
quuiicos in Iho present condition ol (ho country,
distracted aud rent asunder, without a solitary par
ly m tho North that has the moral power lo de
clare open war against ihu enemies of ihu consti
tution und lire Union. Iri ihu Presidential struggle

tiuch wqb the origin of tho American party ot
Georgia,—and wu may b.iv, of tlio South. In its
outset it held to some views that were not tenable
upon sound principle or good policy ; yet it was,
in ihu main, right, and the only party in our histo
ry that has had ihu courage to declaro war against
an evil that every ono has 6oen, di-precaUd and
h'ared. Whatever may lie lh«* prisr nt nspuet «>f its
nflairs, the great principles thill In- at the Inunda
tion of the parly will yet sue the day ol their tri
umph. It may not be under tho name of Ameri
canism, yet it mailers little, so the broad shield ol
ii* measures aro interposed between the country
and ihu danger that threaten it.
In the South, tho efforts of the American party
I if ascendency have, tor the most part, proved un
availing. In Georgia, ihoy have bu«n signally de-
fettled; yet wo cannot regard tlm recent decision
of < ur people ns a deliberate condemnation of the
high aims and nohlo purposes of tlio party. Pre
sumed ns an abstract issue, and apart f-om the con
flicting interests of parly organizations, we do no 1
believe there is a Slate in the Union that would
tail to give them its approval. Hero in Georgia,
the party ho* had to contend with fearful odd*, and
has only been defeated by a combination composed
of iho great body ol the dt-rnocrtiiic party, tlio en
tire foreign vote, and the powerful aid of two qld
wing leaders, whose past opinions would have jus
tified us in expecting nt their hand* friendship, and
not war. But we have no quarrel now for those gen
tlemen We only hope that experience will prove
tlm wisdom of putting down a suspucied evil, for
tlio purpose of setting up au established curse.
The luture policy of the American party ol tho
South is a plain ono. They havo done their whole
duty, und can, with a good conscience, leave the ! wt “ l
responsibility to their triumphant opponents. How-
ovor great may bo the evil of foreign influence in
our country, there is another question ol equally
fearful moment, and that rises up immediately be
fore us. F*a wise rpun sccnteth the danger from
afar," says tho proverb, yet it is a very foolish man
whrr fixes his eyes upon a storm in the distant
horizon, while tho roof that shelters his liuad is
about to be wrapped iu the flames of a conflagra
tion. | A aterner issue awaits us j and to tho con
servative men of the South the country must look
