" New Frencu Instructor, by Andrews and
D. Appleton & Co., Now York,
AihenBinn to greet Mr. Jamison and Mire Reed*
upon their fust appearance on our boards. We
wero gratified to see this, and cannot but regard it
assn earnest o| bi tter times for our worthy mana
ger, whose eflorts up to this .imo have boon as un
profitable aa they were indefatigable.
Ol the play, at the late hour at which ••»e write,
we can say but little. “ Richolieu" presen's, per
haps, as many difficulties in the way ol a auocere-
ful representation, a* any other play we are ac
customed to see on our southern boards, end its
selection for the first appcarunce of our new actors,
is proof ot a confidence and courage on thair part
that is bound to win aucccss. We presume the
most hypercritical of the audience last night will be
roady to concede that tho part of Richelieu was
acted well. This ia saying much for so difficult a
task. Mr. Jamison fully comprehends his sub
ject, and though a severe critic miuht suggest a
fow changes, it cannot be denied that it was pre
sented with groat force and power.
Of the lair debutante, Miss Reeder, we would
speak kindly and encouragingly. Tho entire
heart of her audience was on her side, as was man
ifest in their rapturous applause of her chaste
and charming declamation. Sho ia very young,
quite pretty, and has talents that will sumo day
shine.
The popular play of “Ingomnr” will bo present
ed this evening, with Mr. Jamison as Ingomnr and
Mias Reeder ns Parihema. Those who witnessed
their admirable puisonaiion of "Richelieu” and
"Julio do Mortimer" last evening, wo fed sure,
Will not forego the pleasure of hearing them again.

Texas are to a man in favor of forming a new
stale out of ihu western portion of that slate; and
fo a man ihty are opposed to slavery. There are
many settlers from the n»rthorn stales arnongsi
thorn, too, and together he thinks thoy can com
mand ten thousand votes already. The letter is
written by Mr. Wilcox, a member of congress
from Mississippi, who has lately returned from a
visit to Texas. By the act annexing Texas it is
provided that it may yet bo divided into two or
mor* states, and it is quito probable that such a
division will erelong bo demanded.

The Late Blocilsas,
The heedless reports in the newspapers of the
late elections in the different States, have no doubt
produced much false Impression upon tho purport
ol their results, and many mistakes as to the laeis
involved. Doinooracy has come to bo in this
country a name, under which, as that oi Liberty in
revolutionary Franco, many unscrupulous things
are done, and their vicious mischief screened and
approved. Tho election remits are proclaimed ns
Democratic victories! Thu principles and the
mensoroa of that once noblo pnrty havo long since
been consummated, or booomo obsolete and
abandoned, or tlioir consideration and importanoc
lost in sterner issues, dogouorato objects, and
sectional distraction. Thu old party, sold to
"spoils,” and broken by fanaticism, has crumbled
into fragments, nnd struggles in Jotachud bands.—
Its Administration has been unable, although hav
ing litany good and oven high purposes, to achieve
naught but a measure whloh has rent the country
wiilt the fierouat discord. In view of these woll
known facts, how unblushing the attempt to perpe
trate tho folly nnd falsehood of representing Into
election triumphs as thoso ol tho "good old Demo
cracy” and nusutosman-liko measuros. And in
addition, many important facta have boon misrep
resented or kept from view.
An unquestionable general assertion may bo
hero made, that in tho late elections, tho Old
Whig and Democratic parties, both loaders and
rank and file, have been divided each in itself, and
scattered among all factions and organizations.
Lot us note the tacts in the various States.
Mnino.—Thu defeat of tho Atnorican Party is
claimed as a Democratic victory, yot tho voto of
thoao who retained tho name of Democrat in tho
struggle, was not x sixth of tho total number oust
The triumph was Iho result of a fusion hotween
Anti-American Ireesoilors, Anti Liquor Law men,
nnd treesoil Democrats and Whigs.
Tennessee—This isclaintod as a Democratic
Ststo because ol tho election alone of the Governor,
in lace ol tho fact that a majority of the mombers
of Congress nnd of both Houses of the Legislature
aro American, and tho voto which cloclod them ii.
tho earns struggle, n majority ol tho popular
suffrage. Tho State is American.
Georgia.—Can tho election there be claimod as
A Democratic triumph, when ii was achieved undtr
the auspices ot the old Wing leaders, who wero
tho prominent politicians ol the Stuto f Mr. Over
by, the third candidnte, was a member, we under
stand, ol iho American party, and recoived over
6,000 votes, scarcely ono of whom would have
g.>uo for Governor Johnson, nnd would probably
under other circumstances have sustained
American candidate- Jt was to have Stepher..,..
Whig, and Colib, a "spoils” Democrat, which car
ried Goorgia against the American parly. T,ho
latter has attained, in a fow month’s effort, to’ a
strength which may bo rn.tr led as justifying high
hope*and renewod cflorta. It embraces thousands
ol tho best Soiilln rn Democrats.
Ohio.—Ha ! and tho election of Chase, n noto
rious abolition leader of iho North, is paraded in
Southern papers as a Democratic triumph! On
the other hand, it was the result ol tin* fusion ol
the Ireesoil elements in that Slate. Ono ot Inn
uiIti-s was Fold, a ronegado Inni tho Philadelphia
Pia'torm, alike a repudiatnr nnd a repudiated, ih«
lie of whose forged speech purporting to loive beet,
made in the National Council, has gone the rounds
ol the opposition uap< rs. Chase was a Democrat,
vet Irerly allied (nitiself with nbulilionizvd Know
Nothings, Whigs and others
Poniifylvunia—It was not the American party
which was beaten in that State. This party there
had Nplu at und alter iliu National Council, nnd it
was the Ireesoil wing, under the lead of< x-Gov-
eruor Johnson, winch wus routed by u lusioti
national Deinoerais, national Whigs, ireesoil
Democrats uml Liquor men. Tito national Amci-
ienns were no doiini heartily icjoiced at the rout.
Wo will go no further m this examination at
present Bui in relation to elections at the S >ulh,
it tiny fairly and earnestly he said that tho Amei-
ican party loot uiiuined to wonderlul s rengilt,
when, with now tiniites as loaders, nnd hut lew
papers and orators, P has had to struggle forward
ttguiiist the established press and prominent poli
ticians, wln> opposed it with every effort and skill,
nnd mislead the people hs lo its principles and
objeota. But at lust these arc ilrariotbe Allium
heati, and will in duo lime bo enforced ana uon-
•umuvitcd.
Wo repeat again, that the Democratic party,
ns such, nml under old auspices, cannot carry »
single North, in Slate; that it cun neither carrv
nor unite lliu whole South, and that therefore it
is ii.-oIohb either us a national or sectional party.—
Th s will be illustrated in the Presidential scram
ble a year hence.

Ei ms net's of franco uml Englum!.
Tho English slock market remains heavy in
character, ami cloyed I 4 per cent lower than yon-
tordny. Alter official hours, a further decline «.f
I-3 per cont was quoted. Bales on banking 11c
count, and lor the Bank of England in particular,
are more actively continued, and though they aro
met to a certain extent by the investmouiH of tho
publio, money was in increased demand on consuls
duiiou the morning at 6 per cent till the next ac
count day. This rate, however, inducing a supply
ol money, it became earlier in tho afternoon. Tho
dram ol gold to Paris, on uccount of tho Bank of
Franco, continues, and a further sum of £301),(HU)
was shipped tins morning, but ihe bulk of ibis, 11 is
believed, was not drawn diroeily Ir-un tho Bank ol
England. Owing to the continuance ot this re-
marknblo efflux, hi .fuou of docidcdly improving
oxohnngos, iho idea is becoming more prevalent
that, unless the pressure is relieved by liberal ar
rivals of gold from Australia, the Bank of ..ngland
may find itself compelled 10 adopt additional
nionsureaol restriction. This view ia considered
to bo stronghenod by iho increasing distrust wnh
the poaitinn ol French nmneiory aHUira is at pres
ent regarded. The propriety of eauiiou in this
direction is strongly corroborated by the tenor of
private mercantile communciationa from Paris,
according to w hich a report in gaining ground in
that city that iho Bank of Franco coniumplnlca
doubling ita present capital of Ul,000,0(H) Irnucs t>»y
£'3,640,000. A project, it is averred, is also on iho
tapis for malting the notea ol ihe Bank govornmr'ni
paper, i. n.,lohn guaranteed by ilia government, but
iho Bank ol France to bo exempt from rompuLion
to pay ihom in spocio. As iliin proposal, howovur
dingumed, would imply n legalized discontinuance
of cash payments by iho Bunk of Franco, nnd
would probably send tho notea of that establish
ment, guaranteed, though th y might bo, to a dis
count, thoro is an unwillingness hero lo believe
that the rnpori hsF nny valid foundation. At tho
■am* timo confidence in lliu financial wisdom of .
tho 1*ranch government la not very strong, and iu,
further woakened by ihe immunity of tho present
regime from the salutary chock* involvod in par
liamentary control mid iroo discussion. Accord
ing to tho Iasi published return of tho Bunk of
Franco the coin and bullion atood at only £11,-
