Another ona of tho resolutions binds the mcetiug

that convenlion. The meeting, including Meeara.
Stephens and Toouibv, did not propose to send

ol Dt-mocrsiic partisans.
We are glad these gentlemen have at length

The election! lor Solicitor* Genoral invite some
remark upon iho manner in which they are con
ducted, aud tho principles upon which they are
founded- It has not been long, as you a:e aware,
since the election of Judges ol the Superior Courts,
was taken from the General Assembly, and ginn
to tho people. Solicitors General being ao impor
tant atm of tho Judiciary, consistency, if nothing
more, required that thoy too, should get their au
thority at toumain head ; while in justification of
the one ntarte, the other content-
old political supporters weie deceived , they were
made to believe it was a contest between h.um-li ]
and the American party, and not between the Ainer 1
can party and the Democracy. He said cot a
word lor Johnson, yet all his blows inured to his
benefit.
What will the old.lino Whigs of ihe Seventh
and Eighth districts aay to the present p.•auum ol
Mr. Stephens and Mr. Toombs f Did they agree
by the support they gave them in ihe late con’es:,
to follow them into tho Democratic party ? Did
they bind themselves to go with them to Cincin
nati, to unite wttli the many-colored Democratic
aud Free soil tribes lum the Nc rth, the Ea*t, and
the West, that will be theie, and thus to abandon
the trienda and principles they have cherished all
their lives? It they did so agroe, then the bargain
is consummated—" the pouud flesh" is their*.—
But tl uo such agreement was made, no such pro
mise given, then it does seem to im they owe it to
themselves, to their ‘conservative principles, to
plated—it :• urged that the genius of Democratic
governin' nta requires that the people shall be the
primary sources of power as tar ns possible. At
the last session, a Bill was passed, amendatory ol
tho Constitution, which contemplates the same pol
icy in Solicitors elections, which lias been adopted
in regird to Judges ; and should the present Leg
islature also pass the bill.il becomes a law. Its
advantages arc, that it relieves the legislator ol
two most unpleasant dilemmas, ihe one involving
personal Iriendships and the hnrd task of deciding
between two or nmre candidates, equally qualified
per had* f" r ihe office, and equally esteemed by the
voter ; the other, the risk of voting for tho least
qualified.and it may be.thft least deserving man; for
it is impossible that the legislator can bo sufficient
ly acquainted with the merits of all candidates, to
voto understanding^ in every, or oven a majority
ot cases. Lastly, the Bill is said to bo eminently
Democratic in spirit. Tlieso constJvrations are at
first eight, plausible enough. But there arc fixed
their sell-respect, to etna-out front among the I ruloe by which we may be ffuidod fit the matter-
