WAsniNQTOjt, Dee. 11.
Nothing important was done in tho Senato to

The House took six balloting* for Speaker, with
the satno result ns yesterday. There is no present
prospect of an early organisation.
The President has been informed by tho U. S.
District Attorney in New York, thnt there is
another movement on foot for the invasion of
Nicaragua. Prompt measures have been taken for
its suppression.
Nothing later has been received from Kansas. It
is believed thnt the previous neeouuts from thnt
quarter were exaggerated.

.TiiP The render will find in our issue of to-day j
the annual reports of the President and Superin- !
tendentof the Central Railroad and Ranking Com
pany, together with the statement of the Cashier. ]
They represent the affair* of the Company in n
highly prosperous condition, and will he read with
interest by the stockholders and friends of internal
improvement generally. The increase in the in- |
come of the Road is enormous, and reflects do* i
served credit upon the sagacity with which it has
ben managed. It will he seen that the subject of '
a double track is already engaging the attention of
the Company.
AntES-Ei'M.—If a continued succession of broad
grins, with now and then a “family smile," iu
term well understood by College hoys,' l.e unv in
dication of internal enjoyment, we should say that
our Manager tutored most successfully for the very
largo audience—the largest of the season—that hon

Albcrtine, last eve..!ng. The lively mid humorous
variety that i< feeding the heavy and more dig
nified acting of some weeks j n-t. is an agreeable
relief, and seems de-tir.d to draw greatly to tho
advantage of the manager. He do«erve3 it: mid
we hop® the hill for this evening will he honored
by equally ns good a house.
Macon Telegraph.—Messrs. Green, Barnes Jt
Co., have disposed of the above journal to Mr.
Joseph Clisby. Mr. Tracy also retires from the

occupied hereafter by the new proprietor. We
welcome Mr. ClUhy into the cditoriul corps of our

pleasant and profitable.
Brunswick, nml Savannah, Albany and

The passage tiy the Senate, of tho Dill to give
the aid of the Statu to the above roads will he wel
come news to n large portion of our readers. If not
re-considered yesterday it was doubtless suit forth
with to the House, and we learn there is n fair
prospect of its success in thnt body. The original
bill, it will lie recollected by those who have kept
pace with the proceedings, referred only to the
Brunswick road, and the Savannah Si Albany work
was ctubr iced in its provisions through an amend-
mont offered by the Scnntor from Chnthmn when it
came up for a third reading. The hill gives to tho j 0 f (jrconc. Crowd)
former $6,000 per mile to the amount of one mil
lion of dollars, while the amendment secure* to the
latter $7,000 per mile up to tiie point where it

The Cabinet and Kansas.—According to Grce-

this instance than usual—the President und his

to furnishing military aid to tho authorities of

English Bacon.—Americans visiting England
are often struck with the superiority of English
bacon over our own, particularly of that from
Wilts und Yorkshire. It is believed that lie dif
ference is owing solely to the mode of preparation.
We publish tiie following recipe as furnished by
Dr. Browne, of tiie Agricultural Bureau of the
Patent Office. It is worthy of the attention of our
agricultural readers :
“As soon ns the bacon conics from the butcher's
hands it should have a covering of suit, dried und
rolled to a line powder, well rubbed iu with the
hand l" every part, using the linger to (ill every
hole and joint, as it is most important tlmt the
meat should take the salt when quite fresh. Iu
twelve hours till the brine and dump salt not ab
sorbed should he si raped off the bin-on and re
moved from the vessel, mid dry salt added again,
as much as needed to cover it. as before, and well
rubbed in. Tiiis process should be repeated every
twelve hours for three days, when Milputic should
be lidded, getting off previously all thu damp suit
mid brine as before, and applying the saltpetre as
the common salt, adding a lmndlul of the latter.—
A quarter of a pound of snlpetrc to it side of bacon
weighing seventy pounds is .*uflicient; then mix
one pound of coarse brown sugar mid one pound of
treacle or molasses, and pour over the saltpetre on
the bacon, adding a little more common salt daily
for three days, whit It serves to make the pit kle
keep well, and the whole liquor should lie I " led
with n teacup over thuhacou as often as comcni<-ut.
four times a day for the tir-t two weeks alter it wu-
first put to the liucon, mid then never h .*« than
twice a day for thu remainder of the time needed
tor its pickling, which is four weeks, or longer if
large bacon; and then it should be sent to the dry-
ittg-house, and smoked over a wood lire."
Thu. Fashionable Thief.—A rogue takes n
•iiqiiet to your frontdoor, tells your servant it is
for the I it Ay of tho house, waits for her to dictate n
reply, slips into the parlor and pockets the little
treasures tlmt lie nrottnd loose. This is the lntcst
st vie of the house thieves.
