In advance. To which the following reply was
returned. Wa exhibit it as a very exaggerated
instance of a das* of penplo who think that all
newspapers are published for their particular hen*
efit and fly into a passion when their slightest wish
la disregarded. We would simply suggest to Mr.
Lanman, that if be thinks the meaning of ‘‘South-

it an interpretation which wa ara not willing to

Waanixorox, D. C., May 19. 1S5S.
8m:—You are tbe only editor in tbe United
States who has thought proper to charge me for
printing the little n«tioe I sent you,—which
concerns the public more than it does me. I shall
not pay your demand, and intend that you shall
have the pleasure of remaining "alone in your
glory.” If yon ara one of those who ara eternolly
declaiming against Yankee meanness, you must
oertainly understand your badness.
As I have fur fifteen years been connected with
the leading newspapers of the eountry, and as you
have copied my articles by the page, I must ray
your note surprised me. Its irnpuie ce does not
smack of "Southern Chivalry.”
Yours Ae., Charles Lakh ax.

profess to be tbe champions. From the aboutt
source, wo are informed that within a month five
persons were bung by tbe Regulators in and about
Timpa Bay for divers serious offences, and without
tbe formal trial by jury. Ooa man was bung to u
tree, in tbe streets of Tampa, eo high that his fee)
could not be reached by persons passing on horse
back. Ha also states that a negro was nrraignod fur
trial for murder in Nissau county, some time since;
when bat eleven jurymen answered totbeir natner;
while the officer was absent, summoning a tails*
man to make up the twelfth, some fifteen Regula

tbe box to a place on the Florida aud Georgia line
and hung him to a tree. Ooa of the volunteers in
the late service against the India*, ho also i>tutn*

threatened vengeance of tbe Regulators, preferred
deserting, end baa not hen, toiud ..r *t . e. Two
women of ill reputo were taken up in Tampa and
whipped, each receiving fifteen lashes, and given
notice to leave in twenty-four hours; at tbe expira
tion of tbe time, they gave no evidence of any in.
tontion to move, when they were again arrested,
and another flagellation ioflioted, besides having
their heads shaved, and themselves assisted out of
tbe place.
Tbe above is the substance of what our infor

been mentioned in the pipers of Florida, we pre

Editorial Correspondence of the Ho*

Aliaht, May 21st, 1869.
A few "jottings down” from this interesting
section of Georgia, may prove acceptable to the
readers of the Republican, especially to soch as
float upon the great current of Trade, or feet an
interact in the progress of our nobis State.
Sixteen years ago we visited Albany, from a por
tion of the State about equl-dietant, io a direct
line with Savannah, reaching her after a week's
laborious travel over a most nearisotno road. This,
our second visit, was made in a few hours. Dming
at the ordinary hour in Savannah, without any

handsomely planned city marks the spot. There
are a large number of bu,iuc»a hou-es devoted to
tbe vorious branches ot trade, f.*ur handiomo
churches, a superb court-house, '.me u! the largest
and costliest warehouses in the State, besides a
number of less siio, a spacious and substantial
railway depot, aotna beautiful prirato resiJeucei,
and a populati-m of somccightevu huudrtJ.
I should not omit to mention another of the
" institutions ” of the pl ace, creditable to its public
spirit and an interesting feature to travellers: Al
