We have unavoidably left n ut the

The Western Union Teleernpb Com

in their office here recen'ly. Dicks
proud now.
We a-ked a gentleman to give ns
some locals, His reply was he had
nothing but vegetables.
Hide out tleti, the Walnut lenv s
are coming into town. We hope some
thins "ill come fa to make the mosqui
toes hide’ out too.
As the press already know where we
are to meet next year, it is hardly worth
•while to let the public know that we
meet in Gainesville.
Just as we bad settled ourself to write
up S' me locals theotln r morning the
old woman stepped in and p<>li'ely in
formed us that we hud to local ou a
clean shirt first. ,
We had the pleasure of shaking the
hand of our friend Col. A. M. Ives, who
has been abs. tit for some time on a tour
to Florida. lie is looking very much
improved.
That tickling in the nose, stop it, be
fore it becomes Catarrh, by Dr. .1. H.
McLean’s celeb*ted Catarrh Snuff. I'
soothes arid allays irritation, it cures
pores in the uese or skin and removes

Ain’t our landlady a case,” remarked
a voting man the other day, after he
had whittled about an hour on a pict
ure frame which she had requested
him to make for ler. “She has always
got something for a fetlow to do dur
ing bis leisure moments to earn his
grub.”
Messrs. Whaler & S“n have just re
ceived a fine lot of buggy harness, bri
dles, whips and a splendid lot of sad
dles. Tbcyare offering them at live and
b‘l live prices. Vie at, vise all in reed of
aoch at tides to give them a cull and
price their goods before purchasing
elsewhere.
—Our Baptist friends will commence a
series of meetings on next Friday.
They propose org iniz ng a Baptist
Church in this plane on that day. Rev.
Mr. Atkins'n, and a few other divines
will be present An interesting meet
ing is an'ieipated on this occasion.
It is earnes, ly Imped that all that can
possibly attend w ill do so.
We acknowledge the receipt of a coni'
niunication from one of the fair six of
Jesup. We wold say to her, however,
that she should Have sent in, or rather
put it on our ease so< ner. Wo do not
say she left it there, hut that’s where
we found it. She writes tinder the cap
tion of “Ladies Slang Phrases ” It will
appear next week.
W T e see that Messrs. Whaley & Son
has unleaded another ear of corn, they
do not intend for the people to suffer
for bread 1 Look at their price currant
in another column, and satisfy yourself
that you cannot do hotter elsewhere.
Since writing the above we find v*
was mistaken in reference to the car of
corn, it was Mr. Poppell’s. C me Mr. P,
give us an adveitisernent so we can let
the corn buyers know how your prices

PcßEvrji, Ga., May 2 Q , 1877.
Me. Editoh:—ln your issue of the
9th appeared a communication signed
‘•PiDcy Woods” calling for independ
ent candidate*. In your issue of the
J9*h inst appeared another communi
cation over the signature of “Wire
Grass,” opposing independents. From
the caption of the piece signed “Wire
Grass” it appeared to have been written
at or near this place. And as a natu
ral con sequence, (under existing cir
cumstances) it may be thought that I
wrote it. Therefore, I thought proper
to say publicly that I did not, and hope
the readers of your paper will uot think
me so relfisb as to be opposed to other
cand and .te- than the nominees. 1
no oljoctioos to as many cndidtes as
“Piuey Woods” wants I agree with
him as to the indifference usually man
ife&ted in election* when there is no op
portion.
I sincerely b( pe the voters of not
■rnly this district but the entire State
will turn out on the second Teusday in
June and vote tor a convention and for
whoever they ’ t to represent them.
I think, Mr. Editor, I can occupy
my time better than writing pieces
with which to trouble you, but I think
it proper and id justice to myself to ask
you to give this a place in your col
umn* Respectfully,
C. 0, Grace.
THOMASVILLE HORTICULTURAL FAIR
AM) I’KESS CONVENTION.
Otti* First Vist to Thomasvllle.
This is the first time we have had
the pleasure of meeting with the press,
therefore you must not expect so much
as you would from a more experienced
j urnalist. Our visit excelled our ex
pectations, for wo supposed we would
Pe among strangers, not so. Upon
our arrival we met our genial coufres,
Triplett and Hansel), who are uuwear
fying in their numerous and delicate
attentions; wo were invited up into
their sanctum where we found the ta
ble havy-loadcd with those long necked
bott.h s filled with the viutage of Thomas
county, equal to tbe choice luliuan ot
old cigars in abundance, equal to die old
Havanna, and a goodly number of our
t>r< ther journalist, who was ahead < f us.
But as we found outsell among friends
and not strangers, we made up for lost
time. After admit stay at refresh
ments uud hstuing to a few jovial re
marks we repaired en mass to the city
hall where the opening exercises ot the
Association commcnoi and. The adJress
fw, lome by Col. Hammond, a lead
ing member of the present Legislature,
was a ni i-terpiece of oratory, wit aud
erudition. In the absenoe of the regu
larly appointed respoudeut, Col. Styles,
that dntv was imposed upon Dr J. D.
Hoyle, of the D -wsou Journal. He bad
but a short time for preparation, but
the Association bad a cause to be
pround of its repaesentntive. Tuen
the cull for Ham was leund and unani
mous, who jesponded in a witty reply
Brother Ham is capable of doing that.
He being the last speaker and owing to
the lateness of tha hour, we adjourned
until 4 p. ni., when we repaired back to
the hospitable sanctum where weqanch
ed uur thirst with that, good old Timm
as county -. From thence to the
Mitchell House, where wo met with
equal courtesy. The gentlemanly pro
prietors, M ssrs. Fabou & Cos., who
showed us the spacious dining room,
which was well supplied with all that
could be desired —and all tor our spe
cial benefit.
The Press Ball was a magnificent
ova'ion on the natt of our Thomasville
hosts and a larae share of the beauty
~f the city assembled in that spacious
dining room of the Mitchell House to
do honor to their visitors. Wo must
say Timm isville is an exception, fT a
more noble and hospitable people are
hard to find. Oh ! that we could be
witn them nftener.
After the adjournment of the Press
Association the next morning we re
paired to the Fair ground, where we
found all a success, even more than wn
expected. The Floral department was
beautiful. Mrs. Hawkins, we think,
had the finest and largest, variety, but
all are hard to beat in Georgia. Vege
tables surpassed our expectations.
Green corn and ripe poach, s we Imrdly
think can be found anywhere elan in
Georgia, and twelve pound turnips we
have no idea can. Mr. Hicks had some
.of those turnips on exhibition. Mr.
Wardavvay exhibited a small cabbage,
Xiily five leet across. In fact, t e euiiie
exhibition was such that Thomasville
tan well be proud of it. As we said
s t first, you must not exp' tso much
from us. We will close until our uexi
/ssue, when we hope tc be able to give
you Col Hammond’s addr as.
