A GAME OF HEARTS.
Morton i-icvyliiaii looked into )iia com
panion’s face and wondered if she really
]>ossessed a heart ! Or was she only—as
had Iteen said—a creature of intellect,
one who required not, and wished riot,
the most precious of all life's blessings—
love. Rather a difficult question! and
her beautiful, queenly countenance,
with its lustrous brown eyes and delicate
chiseled features did not serve to satisfy
his doubts.
He was accustomed to be a favorite
with the gentler sex. Wealthy, intel
lectual, and handsome, he was very
naturally appreciated by maneuvering
mammas and marriageable daughters.
Olara Vane was unlike the woman with
whom he had been thrown in contact.
Although among, she was not of them,
and her indifference hurt him much more
than he cared to confess, even to himself.
So this evening, as they wandered to
gether through the brilliantly illuminated
room* of a fashionable devotee, he asked
carelessly, albeit his eyes rested seareh
ingly ti|wn her face:
“ Miss Vane, do you believe in love ?”
She laughed ■ and, although her dusky
• heck crimsoned a litt.'e, displayed not
the slightest discomposure as she an
swered :
“No —at least not as you do.’"
That sentence implied a certain
amount of something that the gentleman
scarcely liked. How should she know
whether their beliefs were similar?
“ Indeed 1” he commented, somewhat
dryly. Would it he impertinent in rue
to inquire wbat your belief really is?”
She hit her lip.
“ 1 make no pretension- to understand
ing anyone’s ideas upon this or any other
subject better than they themselves do.
I only know that my own opinion of
love is very different from the latter day
sentiment which is now dignified by that
name.”
lie smiled provokingly.
“So is mine. We agree tlins far, at
any rate. Perhaps, were we to compare
notes, the similarity would exist still
further.”
“Scarcely probable,” she answered,
calmly. “Rut it is not an interesting
topic, and as it is of no consequence
whether wo consider it in the same light
or not, I propose we discuss some other
subject.”
Of course after that the conversation
waa changed.
“ Confound it! what’s the use?” he
murmured sadly, that night or rather
that morning—after returning home.
“ Here I am, fairly bewitched alter a
women, who, if report speaks truly, is
not c*;>able of feeling a panicle of affec
tion for any man, and who lias demon
strated beyond a poraii venture her utter
indifference to me. In love with an ice
lierg! That’s what’s the matter! Rut
I swear I won’t make a fool of niystl
any longer She can go her wav,and 111
go mine!”
Whether this resolution would have
'•ren kept or no, is n question that must
threver remain unsettled, as the next day
Miss Vane had left town —gone, no one
knew where; to remain, none knew how
long.
Hut we, being wiser than the majority
ot folks, may follow her away from the
crowded metrojadis to a beautiful coun
try seat, down in Kent, where, disgusted
alike with the world and herself, she had
•'ought refuge for the summer months
with her’young married friend, Mary
Thurston.
“ Now, Clara,” said the young lady,
as they sat together, some few evenings
alter Miss Vane's arrival.” of course von
now how glad 1 am to have you here,
Atnl all that sort of thing ; but what in
the world jajssessed you to come ? for.
when I saw you last, you gave me ro
encouragement to licqn> tor this visit,"
“Well, Mary.” to tell the truth, I
hadn’t the slightest idea of paying m two
weeks ago ; but ”
“ But what?” eagerly asked her com
panion. “ You wen- not involved in
any love affair, were you ? 1 head some
thing of a serious flirtation you were
having with somebody. It didn’t be
came too serious—did it ?"
t's, it dill ! ” iiiisweml hor guest
itnjietuously, startled out of her usual
reticence by that strange longing for
that sympathy which sometimes seizes
the proudest of us. *■ I became ac
quainted with a man endowed with ox
triu.riiu.xry gifts ot mind and person,
:ual 1 undertook to teach him a lesson.
Hut. alas for human volition 1 I learned
tb lesson 1”
*' Djr he know it interrupted her
irieud. anxiously.
Know it?" >ho repealed in scorn.
No ! nor never will ’ And that is the
re asm i 1 have come to x'ou so unex
pectedly."
I he conversation was litre put an end
to by the entrance of Captain Thurston.
" A letter for you. Mary. From Mor
ton. 1 fancy," he said, care lees y tessing
it into her lap.
The quick blood rushed to (.'tarn's face,
r.ven the name caused her heart to thn-
ster strangely ; hut neither of her fiiend
noticed l*er agitation—both bung en
grossed in their missive.
“Oh, dear!” sighed Mrs. Mary, ha'f
unconsciously.
Clara and her husband looked up in
surprise. Her face was glow-ing joy
fully, albeit her eyes were full of tears.
“ What’s the matter?” they asked in
a breath.
“Oh, nothing much!” she replied.
“ Only I’m so glad. Clara, 1 never
knew that you were acquainted with my
half-brother, Morton Levvllian.”
Poor Clara! Her lace, even to the
roots of her hair, was scarlet; but she
made no reply, and her friend continued,
remorselessly: “He is coming to pay
us a visit, and we may expect him every
moment.”
All the co’or fled swiftly from Clara’s
cheek.
•“Now, don’t he a goore !” whispered
Mary, softly. “ Just read this.”
So Clara read as follows:
“M y Dear Sister.— l am sick of the
‘great metropolis,’ sick of life, and sick
of myself; am fast becoming, in fact, a
misanthrope—sick of everything So, to
improve this woeful condition of affairs,
shall start to-night for y u ur sweet, pretty
country home. For the last few
months I have made a fool of myself by
falling in love, and that is a very serious
business for a man of my peculiar tem
perament, I can assure you. Did you,
durinir your visit here, ever know a Miss
Clara Vane? I was in France at the
time you remember. Well, we have
been indulging in what Damo Grundy
would call ‘a pleasant flirtation,’ and,
for the first time in his life, your brother
confesses himself conquered. People say
she has no heart. That I don’t believe.
It is utterly impossible so glorious a
woman should be minus that most femi
nine appendage. Rut, one thing cer
tain, she has no heart for me ; and that
has left me without heart for anything
else. (Please don’t think this intended
for a pun—l am in anything but a pun
ning humor.) As you know lam not in
the habit of proclaiming my miseries,
and hate pity above all things, burn this
as soon as read, keep all the information
contained herein to yourself, and don’t
say ‘woman’ to me while 1 remain.
“ Morton,”
Even as Clara read, a tall figure dark
ened the doorway.
“Oh, Morton!” shouted his sister,
joyfully, advancing with outstretched
hands.
After greeting the husband and wife,
the newcomer glanced questionably over
at the silent lady standing in the shadow
of the room.
“ Clara, here is my brother,”said Mrs.
Thurston, smilingly. “ I believe, how
ever, you are already acquainted with
one another.”
Thus urged, Clara advanced.
“Miss Vane! —and here!” said the
gentleman, in amazement. Then, recov
ering himself: “ Kxcuse me, but this
meeting was so utterly unexpected, that
I”—And here his glance suddenly fell
upon the letter, which she >t,i 11 held.
“ Mary gave it to me,” she stammered,
explaining!y, interpreting aright his
mute astonished look.
He smiled. .Some way, her embarrass
ment put him very much more at ease.
“ She did ? Well, what do you think
of it ?”
She looked around for assistance from
some quarter ; but the husband and wife
had leit the room. So, very unwillingly,
she answered:
“ 1 don’t know.”
“ You don't ? Well,” endeavoring to
look into the eyes which so perti
n leiously sought the floor, “ are you sorry
for me ? ”
“ No,” very low ; and, the next mo
ment, “icy Clary Vane” was clasped
close in a pair of manly arms, from which
she made not the slightest motion to ex
tricate herself.

( nit tract.
Arrangements have been making in
town this week for closing the new con.
tract for jostal cards, awarded by the
postotliee department to the American
Phototype company of New York. The
quantity ot paper which will be con
sumed under this contract is larger than
that ustat during the last four years.
The postmaster general’s report last De
cember showed a consumption of cards
for the previous year amounting to 150,-
800,000. The rapid growth in card cor
respondence leads to the belie: that the
average consumption of the next four
years may be about 250,000,000. At
any rate, provision is making for a de
mand as large as that, aud a contract has
Ken made by the Phototype company
with the house of Wool worth A Graham
of this city for a quantity of paper suffi
cient to meet a consumption of 250,000,-
000 a year, should it be as great as that.
The contract calls ior 3,000 tons of pa| er
or 750 tons a year for four years. The
p.i|H>r will K' made by the Parsons paper
company at Holyoke. It will lie manu
factured into cards in New York under
proper inspection, and be delivered to
the government as fast as called tor.
supposing that there is no increase of
consumption during the next four years,
the number the government will require
will la? 600,000,000. Selling for a cent
a piece, the receipts irom sales will lie
sf>.©oo,D*o. Their cost to the govern
ment under the new contract, which is
at much lower rates than the last one.
will be 5417 240. Sales at the rate of
250,000,000 a year would result in four
years in an income of >lO .000,00**, at a
cost for the cards of .*095,400. —A. 5.

The ignorance of some of our most
wealthy citizens is absolutely humilia
ting. A man who pays taxes on any
quantity of real estate stopped us yester
day and asked to change his livening
Herald to a Morning Herald.
“ Rut our paper only appears in the
evening,” we exclaimed.
“All right! I’ve been a friend of the
paper for twenty years, but that settles
it. If you haven’t got accommodation
enough to print me rriy copy in the
morning you are not a live newspaper
man, and can’t keep up with railroads,

“Blessed arc the meek,” exclaims the
voice of inspiration, but can a roan be meek
with the consciousness that a dreaded mon
ster is consuming his vitals. We are not a
race of Titans. A Prometheus might stand
chained to the torturing rock with a vulture
perpetually gnawing his liver, and his face
even wear an expression of heroic and even
meek endurance. But Prometheus has left
no descendants. With vultures (disease)
consuming his liver, the modern man makes
himself and every one around him miserable,
fretful, gloomy, hypochrondriael, he sees
the world and life all on the wrong side—the
dark side—and whoever dares to assert that
there is a sunny side, he regards as an en
emy, or at best a mocker of his imaginary
woes. Unlike the mythical Titan, the victim
of disease is not succerless. 1 here is an arm
to rescue—a balm to cleanse and heal. As
remedies for this most depressing of ail dis
eases,—“ Liver Complaint,”—none are more
efficient or popular than Dr. Pierce’s Golden

That equable state of mind which is un- j

of a healthful state of the biaiuand stomach.
The dyspeptic and nervous invalid may—al
though this is rare indeed—feign cheerful
ness, and may bear the harassing s}t)jptoms
which persecute him with an assumption ol
heroic indifference, but in reality he is the
victim of despondency. To experience gen
uine cheerfulness of mind, the stomach must
recover its lost tone, the thinking organ its
normal quietude. Hostetter’s Stomach Hit
ters are the best remedy for mental depres
sion, since they overcome the nervous debil
ity and indigestion which originate and fos
ter it. Persons sutieiing from infirmities
peculiarly incident to the decline, of life,
ladies in delicate health, and convalescents,
derive solace and vigor trom its use. Drive
away the blues and revive the drooping en

Wilhoft’k Tonic is not a panacea—is

for malarious diseases, and day by day adds
fresh laurels to its crown of glorious success.
