some time; the public bought with
great confidence.
Freeman wired: “Think we have
had all the recovery that the present
situation justifies. The locals are
strong and the Interior shows more
disposition to sell. Spinners do not
follow the advance,”
Bremen cabled: “German spinners
are committed <for months ahead, and
are liable to enter the market on ex
tensive scale at any time.”
Manchester Guardian: “British
spinners may think the public does
not know the alarming condition of
the Ivlslble, but the smart Americans
are fully aware that Lancashire
stocks are dangerously near the fam

Memphis reported a hardening ten
dency and better demand for spots.
Bears now talk of “Llnters” and

the weight of 360 pound bales. It is
pounds, not bales, spinners want.

NEW YORK COTTON LETTER.
»
(Daily by Private Wire to Clark & Co )
New York, Jan. 17.—The market Is
a drawn battle between those who
bought their cotton on the recent de
cline and have sold at. a profit, and
the local traders who for no apparent
reason have shifted to te buying side
and have bought their cotton on the
advance. There Is nothing essentially
bearish in the situation, but the mar
ket. has rallied to a point where the
southwest is disposed to sell, and
this, with realizing by southern hold
ers of contracts, has checked the ad
vance. C. D. FREEMAN & CO.
