servative students and observers are
confident that the light is breaking
and that in a relatively brief period
the mastery of this dread disease will
be accomplished. In the meanwhile
some points of an encouraging clmrac*
ter have been determined with a high
degree of certainty
It has for one tiling been ascer
tained that there is no good reason for
believing that the occurrence of the
malady is increasing in frequency
This has frequently been asserted by
men who spoke with some authority,
but their statement is now declared to
be inaccurate. It is based upon statis
tics which examination has proved to
be untrustworthy, and it is now tho
better opinion, it Is the opinion of the
highly trained experts who are carry
ing on the studies of the London im
perial fund, that cancer is no more
prevalent today thah it has ever been.
The contrary impression is attribut-

able to the fact that cases of it are
more generally reported than they
were years ago and also that Improved
methods of diagnosis detect its de
velopment under circumstances when
it would formerly have escaped detec
tion. The reiterated, assertion that the
disease \yas rapidly becoming more
common has disagreeably impressed
the public mind. It is a relief to be
assured that the contrary is true.
Another point which has been pretty
well if not absolutely settled relates
to the question of heredity. There are
probably few families in which some
case of cancer has not occurred more
or less remotely. • The circumstance is
usually as far as possible concealed,
but to many of those who become
j aware of It the anxiety which it occa
sions is none the less distressing be
cause it is likely not. to be disclosed.
Thev worry about the possibility^ .of
their meeting the same fate as some
one or other of their relatives, and this
is the very worst thjng they could do.
The whole subject's so obscure that
one hesitate? to speak of any phase
of it with any assurance, but the ob
servation that the occurrence’ of can
cer. is often connected with. prolonged

mental anxiety mav not be without
'. some significance., It is therefore grati
fying to note that the researches of
the imperial fund, while not absolutely
disproving, very seriously discredit
. the prevailing belief about the heredi
tary nature of the affliction.
They, are also reassuring in a third
direction. They show that the disease
is not in the slightest degree infec
tious. It can be communicated from
one person to another, but only by
means of a surgical operation of the
utmost delicacy and difficulty, and so
for all practical purposes it is no more
infectious than gout. , This means
that a patient may he v felted without
the least risk, and there are many to
whom this will be welcome informa
tion. These are all valuabTe discov
eries and it, may fairly he supposed
that they will lead to*others. Already
the investigators are on the verge of
the great secret. That they will pres
ently apprehend It need not be doubt
