At the second meeting yesterday
afternoon of the committee composed
of members of the city council and
^ of the board of county commissioners,
no definite action was taken in the
matter of awarding a contract for the
erection of the high school building.
! As stated in The Herald of yester
day. the bids which were opened at
noon ranged higher than was antici
pated, and the committee could not
see its way clear to award a contract
to either of the bidders.
The second meeting was held nt 2:30
p. m., and was without further definite
result. It' is apparent that one of
three things must be done: a contrac
tor with a lower bid must be found,
the plans and specifications of the pro
posed building must be amended on
less expensive lines,' or more funds
must be made available.
The city nnd county have $25,000
with which to build and equip the
school building. The lot was pur
chased for the sum of $5,000, which
comes out of the general fund of the
city nnd county, whose interest is com
mon.
The bids received yesterday have
not been formally rejected. The mat
ter stands in statu quo, and will so
remain for a few days at least. Every
effort will be made to overcome the
obstacles that have presented them
selves, so that no doubt may remain
ns to the completion of the building
in time for the opening of the fall
school term next September. .
| The committee will hold another
[meeting Monday morning, when, it is
i hoped, matters will be in such sTiape
that a contract can be awarded.
THE ALBANY GUARDS
PROCURE AN ARMORY.
Will Use the Chautauqua Auditorium
For Tha* Purpose.
The Albany Guards have secured an
Armory at last, and they have a suit
able one, and one that will answer all
lequirements of the company.
Through the persistent efforts of the
officers, particularly Captain Brown,
the Chautauqua authorities have
leased the auditorium to Company E,
and the company’s headquarters and
drill room will be there hereafter.
The Guards are to have the benches
arranged on the sides of the auditpr-
ium, so as to have a row of seats all
around, and the large floor surface in
the center on which to drill. This will
be by far the largest drill room the
Guards ever had.
The floor slopes a little in the rear,
but not enough to interfere with the
maneuvres.
The Guards are feeling very much
elated over securing the auditorium as
company headquarters, as now they
will have a nple space for drilling and
to perfect themselves in the. differ
ent movements. v
During Chautauqua, of course, the
Guards will not have use of the audi
torium.
FINE PRESSURE FROM
MOTOR DRIVEN PUMPS.
They Were Tried on a Fire for First
Time Yesterday Afternoon.
Yesterday afternoon’s fire afforded
the first opportunity that had been
presented for testing the new motor-
driven pumps at the waterworks sta
tion for fire pressure.
| The smaller of the pumps has been
I in use for some time, furnishing do-,
mestic pressure on the mains at all
. hours. But when yesterday’s fire
»
alarm was turned In the big pump was
put in motion. It exerted a steady
pressure of S5 pounds on the mains,
and the putting of two streams on
the fire did not in the slightest degree
reduce the power, the indicator at the
station standing at S5 pounds until the
fire had been extinguished.
The streams put on the fire were
of great force. They sent shingles
and timbers flying like toothpicks,
and the firemen had no fault to find.
In case of fires on which It will be
necessary to play a number of streams
both the motor-driven pumps will be
worked together, nnd a pressure of 110
pounds will thus be put on the mains.
CARD OF THANKS.
1 wish to extend my thanks to the
members of the Albany Fire Depart
ment for the splendid and fearless ser
vice with which they Baved my home
from total loss by fire yesterday after
noon. I also desire to thank my neigh
bors, who saved me great inconven
ience by their aid, and' while I hope
thnt none of their homes will ever
burn, yet, if such should he the mis
fortune of any of them, I assure them
that my home will be their home if
they so wish. 3. W. KAHN.
