NEW YORK COTTON LETTER.
' I
(By 'Wire to Clark & Co.)
New York, Feb. 20.—It 1b difficult
to make our friends apprehend tbe
commercial aspect of the cotton situa
tion. I realize that economic forces
are slow in asserting themselves, but
a student of them must patiently
await their development. Of course It
Is needless to contest a mistaken mar
ket tendency and now while the price
is Inclined lower It should be regard
ed as but offering the better oppor
tunity for buying. As an evidence of
the expansion of the textile Industry
of the world we have just received
the report of the German government
as to the number of active spindles.
There are now in operation 9,130,000,
whereas until this official report the
estimate has been, from the best
•sources, only 8,822,000. In this coun
try the production of goods is limited
by the looms and If It were possible
to operate 30 per cent, more the goods
would find 'a ready market. Our Man
chester advices are’ that Lancashire’s
product Is well sold ahead, but the re
markable feature of the demand is that
being so sold that the demand for
China should center In America, not-
witlistanchng the boycott of American
fabrics. C. D. FREEMAN & CO.
The market has many friends who
are waiting to buy July at 10.60.
Weather was generally fair over the
belt
Manchester was reported as having
Bold heavily to China for delivery all
during the next crop.
The market was as tame as “Wil
lie's goat” after the first rush to sell.

GLASS OF THE ANCIENTS.
The Blon-cru of Thcben Were Experts
Mirny Centuries Ago,
The filassblowers of ancient Thebes
are known to have been as proficient
in that particular art as jls the most
scientific craftsman of the same trade
of the present day after a lapse of
forty centuries of so called ' progress,
They are well acquainted with the
art of staining glass and are known to
have produced that commodity in
great profusion and perfection. Ros-
selini gives an illustration of a piece of
rtained glass known to be 4.000 years
old, both in tint and design. In this
case the color Is struck through the
vitrified structure, and he mentions de
signs struck entirely in pieces from a
half inch to three-quarters of an inch
thick, the color being perfectly incor
porated with the structure of the piece
and exactly the same on both the ob
verse and reverse sides.
The priests of Ptah at Memphis were
adepts in the glassmaker’s art. and not
ouly did they have factories for-ihanu*
facturing the common crystal variety,
but they had learned the vitrifying of
the different colors and the imitation
of precious stones to perfection. Their
imitations of the amethyst and of the
various other colored gems were
true to nature that even now, after
they have lain in the desert sands from
2,000 to 4,000 years, it takes an expert
to distinguish the genuine article from
the spurious. It has been shown that,
besides being experts in glassmaking
and glass coloring, they, used the dia
mond in cutting and engraving glass,
In the British museum there is a beau

COTTON PICKINGS.
Bull news was as scarce as gamb
ling devices at a church fair.
Liverpool closed quiet, 6 down for
the day.
Port receipts were 28,000 against
3,000 last year.
New Orleans, Galveston and Hous
ton estimates for tomorrow were
about the same as last year.
It looks like an all-year market
again.

®The Earth and Man Compared.
If it were possible for a man to con
struct a globe 800 feet in height—much
less than twice th£ height of the Wash
ington monument—and to place upon
any portion of its surface an atom one
four thousand thre^ hundred and eight
ieth of an inch in diameter an4 one
one hundred and twentieth of an inch
in height, it would correctly denote the
proportions man bears to the gigantic
globe upon which he stands.

Davis Green Looks Well Alter Five Years Exposure to Weather.
Montgomery, Ala.. Feb. 6,1905.
Five years ago I painted Miss Sullivan’s house on Mc
Donough street with Davis’ Pure light green. At the present
time the pamt is as good and sound as the day on which I used
it. I cite this particular case because the surface I had to cover
was NOT in good condition. Davis 100 per cent Pure Paint is
today the very best on the American market for appearance,
covering capacity and durability. .
