THURSDAY, MARCH 1, 1906.
Is'Hoke Smith fooling the Atliintu
Journal, or is It the other way—the
Journal fooling Hoke?
One man who is. Interested in fruit
tells us that tho freeze of Tuesday
night has ruined tho peach crop, while
another says that no groat dnmage has
. been done—that the present cold snap
will provb more of a blessing thnn a
disaster to the fruit growers.
Tho congressional party that
will soon visit Georgia and the sec-
R ond district will Inspect Flint river
and drink nrtosian wntor at Al
t’ bany.—Dawson News.
Albany has tho artesian water all
right, and It Is the best that Hows In
/Georgia, but tho visiting congressmen
.’ ■Brill not bo forced to drink it. Nor
• will they have to go without drink if
they prefer other liquids. Albany is
b right up to dato on something to drink
and drinking facilities and accessories,
arid—well, if the visiting congressmen
fyjjgO away thirsty it will be their own
;"y fault and not Albany’s.
&
The Democrats in congress are evi
dently determined to have Representa
tive James M. Griggs head the con
gressional campaign committee again
tJ|iB year. The friends of Representa
tive Flood, of Virginia, have been dili
gent In his behalf, but the Georgian,
while not a candidate for the position,
' Is the favorite by long odds, and there
sems to be no doubt of his selection for
the'chairmanship. Judge Griggs made
•n eminently satisfactory showing in
each of the two former congressional
campaigns when he directed the work.
Democracy's chances were recognized
as being exceedingly slim, and now
that they are decidedly brighter it is
' recognized as both just and wise that
he be again placed at the helm.

l : . The House Committee on Agriculture
: has struck from the agricultural appro-
priation bill the provision for free seed
^ distribution, and it is not believed that
/ the friends of the free seed will be
able to secure its insertion in tho house.
b.The Southern members of the com-
Sfalttee are reported to have been solidly
pi-arrayed in opposition to knocking out
£the free seed provision, but their
Swishes were ruthlessly overriden. The
fiiowl that will go'up from all sections
of the country- in response to this new
EStyranny of the house will be something
frightful, for there are hundreds of
Hmnusands of loyal constituents of sens-
l and representatives who feel that
yare as much entitled to free seed
y are to free air—or as congress-
■ to free votes.
A8 TO FRIEND8 AND FRIENDSHIP.
Now, men and brethren, and al
so Sisters dear, you should aver
bear In mind that to have and
keep friends there are two things
to do: Sympathize with them
over their ailments and troubles,
and laugh at their JokeB. Do not
loan them much money' or you
may be called to mourn the loss
of friends and- money too.—Val-
dbsta Times.
Isn't this rather flippant? And does
it not seem to put too slight an esti
mate upon friendship, one of the
noblest qualities of humankind?
Men—and women, too—are too prone
in these latter days to disparage true
friendship and to speak of It as some
thing that Is now so rare as to be al
most extinct. But wo believe that
there are just as many true friends In
the world today as thSre ever were—
and more. Though an admirer of
Goldsmith’s writings, we never have
taken any stock In that stanza of his
which we so often hear quoted by
those who esteem friendship ns only
a passing fantasy—
“And what Is friendship but a name',
A charm that lulls to sleep,
A shade that follows wealth or fame,
And leaves tho wretch to weep?"
The Irish poet and novelist who
wrote “The Hermit" was probably no
body’s friend and had himself no
friends worthy of tho name. And hore
It may bo remarked that ho who Is
nobody’s friend can not expect In the
very nature of things to havo friends,
Show us a man, however, who Is reully
somebody’s friend, and wo will, show
you one who has friends worthy of
tho name.
It Bhould be one of tho fixed pur
poses of evory man’s life to make him'
solf worthy of the relationship of true
friendship and then to cultivnto that
quality with otliers whom he may take
to bo equally worthy. If ho bo of a
too impulsive and confiding nnture ho
l't| sure to rnoet with disappointments
In Ills friendships, but he Bhould not
permit these to discourage him nor to
cause him to lose faith lu all man
kind. Such disappointments should
only serve to toncli us to ho bdtter
Judges of character and to hind our
solves up In the ties of friendship with
only the true and the bravo;
Tho man who Is without friends In
the world Is In u hud way, FriendB
are better than money, for ho who has
friends and Ib worthy of them will
never suffer for money, and there are
times in ovary man's life when he
fools tho nood of such friendship and
confidence and consolation ns money
cunnot buy. True friendship that 1ms
Its basis In sterling character is. tho
highest quality thnt man can possess,
mill he who can claim a few such
friends—oven two or tliroo In the wide
world—is fortunate If he Is hlmsolf
worthy of them.
There recently died In New York
city one Charles T. Yerkes. Ho was
u man of wealth—possessed many mil
lions—yet ho was poor and miserable
in Ills dentil. Ho had spent his life
In accumulating wealth and Imd neg
lected to cultivate those qualities
which would Imvo endeared him to Ills
fellow men, and ho .died without
friends. Even his wife was estranged
from him and he was without the ten-
dor and soothing ministration that lov
ing hands alone can provide when It
comes to suffering and dentil. He was
rich, so far as money goes, but u
beggarly pauper In all that makes Hie
worth living or that robs death of hor
ror. When mortal illness came upon
this man of millions, It found him not
only estranged from Ills wronged wife,
but. outside of a few intlmntes of ques
tionable character, some of whom
were of a purely parasitic type, he was
ns friendless In his last hour as Bene-
*
diet Arnold. Ho had neglected to
build character and to cultivate the re-
latlori of friendship with those of his
fellow men who would have gladly
given him true friendship in return
for the same essential to human hap-
/
plness; and, ill death, like Dives, he
may have found Lazarus lr. the su
perior position in that mysterious
realm to which wo are all Inevitably
drifting.
Yes, there Is such a tiling as friend
ship, and It is one of the essentials to
human happlneSs which needs to be
cultivated more in these times of
wealth-getting and fortune-building.
THE GEORGIA WEEKLY.
There are some cracking good weekly
newspapers in Georgia. Were we to
pour all ot them into a jug, shake the
mixture thoroughly and draw off a
product, it would show a degree of ex
cellence not to be surpassed in any
state. To assert that an overwhelming
majority of the weekly newspapers of
Georgia are good is but to state a self-
evident truth, and it is the same to say
that of those rated good many are truly
excellent. ,
■ ’Die weekly newspaper-or the semi
weekly or tri-weekly, as the case may
be—has a sphere of peculiar usefulness
which the modern daily cannot hope to
All. There is a certain' strong sympa
thy between the country paper and Its
readers which is seldom interrupted,
and the editor is the constant counsellor
and friend of those whose confidence
he enjoys. He rejoices with them in
their prosperity, extends cheer and
sympathy in their dark hours of mis
fortune, promptly warns them of
threatened dangers, and unselfishly
fights their battles when they are them
selves indifferent.
A good country weekly is a joy for
ever, and in Georgia it is nearly always
a thing of typographical beauty as well.
