OPPOSITION IN SAVANNAH
TO SARAH BERNHARDT.
Mayor Myera and Some of the Local
Mlnldtera Condemn Actress.
8peclal to The Herald., .
Savannah, Ga., March 2.—Is it right
for the general public to be ’invited to
see a play like Camille even when pre
sented by such an artiste as Madame
Sarah Bernhardt?
This is the question Mayor Herman
Myers and several of the ministers of
•the city have been discussing, and
they agree that the playing of such a
piece can do little to upbuild the mor
als of a community.' The Mayor
thinks the effect is certain to be bad.
He dees not believe in encouraging
such productions. 1 Rev. W. N. Ains
worth, pastor of the Wesley Monu
mental church, who came here Jan
uary i from Macon. Is very outspoken
in Ills denunciation of the appearance
or iho actress in such a role. He snys
that It is a disgrace for the “Divine
Sarah" to even come to Georgia to
appear In “Camilla” or any other
show. He recalls the titne 'he eaiae

SECT OF “FIRE DOCTORS”
FOUND IN ATLANTA.
Discovery Following the Death of a
Child that Was Burned.
Special to The Herald.
Atlanta, Ga., March 2.—The recent
death and burial of Leonora Saund
ers, a 16-months-qld child, which was
burned to death' while playing in front
of an open grate In the home of her
parents, has brought to light the ex
istence of a little sect of “fire doctors”
In the white settlement of mill hands
known as Factory Lot.
While the little girl writhed in
agony from her burns no effort was
made to secure medical aid to alle
viate her intense suffering. On the
contrary one of the "doctors” — an
aged hag—“talked out the fire” and
administered salve made of lard and
red pepper. Neighbors say the “fire
was successfully talked out,” but the
child died next day after having suf
fered the torments of the fiery fur
nace.
MAJOR GILLETTE’S
RESIGNATION ACCEPTED.
Quits* Army Engeering for a Better
Paying Job.
Special to The Herald.
Atlanta, Ga., March 2.—Because of
the proposed building of a viaduct
from the end of Washington street to
Gilmer, spanning the railroad tracks
and making way for the N., C. .. St.
L. freight terminals at Waverly Place,
It is highly probable that the Episco
pal Cathedral, which is located at the
corner of Wellington and Hunter
streets,.will institute suit against the
city of Atlanta for $75,000 alleged
damages.
Bishop C. K. Nelson, *of the.Diocese
of Georgia, is authority for the state
ment that the church property will he
damaged that amount by the erection
of the big bridge. Changes in the
grade of the street to accommodate
the viaduct will force the cathedral
to have but one entrance, and that
from 12 to 15 feet above the street
level. The cathedral is one of the
oldest churches In the state, and num
bers among its congregation some of
the most prominent and wealthy citi
zens of Atlanta. The Bishop says he
has no desire to hinder city improve
ments, but where damage is done
there should be some compensation.
