Man Who Lends the State Money for Pen<
sions Carefully Conceals Identity.
Special to The Herald.
ATLANTA, Ga., March 12.—A New York draft for $17,000 has been
received by Governor Terrell from a “generous unknown,” ^ho last week
agreed to lend the state—without Interest—that sum of money with which
to pay off all pension claims for this year. The governor declines to
give out the name of the lender, as the money was tendered with the
strict understanding that no names were to be made public. • 8o careful
was this generous person to guard his identity that he would not trust
his check to go through an Atlanta bank and the local clearing house, but
sent a New York exchange, on which appears but one name—that of
Joseph M. Terrell, to whom the check is made payable. Every candi
date for public office In the state is being accused of being the giver of
the check, but as all maintain a discreet silence, It may be that they all
sent it. It was announced some time ago that the Georgia pension fund
would be short $17,000, and that several of the counties would have to
wait until the General Assembly met and made an extra appropriation
to cover the deficit before they could get any money.

Now that the theatrical season prop
er has closed, with the exception of
a stray vaudeville or repertoire show
or two; amateur talent is exerting it
self, and a number of amateur at
tractions of different sorts are prom
ised soon. Among these Is a musical
comedy, with only males in the cast,
for the benefit of the Albany Guards,
a musical comedy for the benefit of
the local lodge of Elks, a trades ex
travaganza—whatever this is—for the
benefit of the charity hospital. All, It
is said, will be good entertainments,
and will, no doubt, receive liberal pat
ronage from the Albany public.
